Alligatorob's Diary

Inspiring journey mate, you’ve come such a long way! Congratulations on all your progress so far! I admire your approach as I’ve found tracking everything is insane but the only real way to be accountable for what I eat.

I like all the macro calculators and such but find their calories a bit too generous. I feel like I wouldn’t lose weight if I consumed what they said I should. But I find I can get plenty of nutrition and feel full in the 1,300-1,400 range so I tend to think of that.

One thing I found tracking my macros was that I wasn’t getting near enough protein. I eat a lot more meat now. I still don’t take in what they recommend because I’m concerned for my kidneys, but I’m looking at close to 100 grams at this weight.

It was a good day, but a busy one, did not have time for my usual snacks so the calorie count was a little lower than I wanted. Fortuanately I was able to have a late night whiskey to bring the count up a bit.

In 1192 Venus occulted Juniper, and extremely rare event. When one planet occults another it means it blocks the view from earth, kind of like a planetary eclipse. When you think about how small Venus and Jupiter are in the sky, and that Venus is closer to the sun and Juniper further than us its amazing this even happens at all. It should happen again on the 14th of September 2065, some of y'all may be around to look for it, but not me.

Another good day. I eat a lot of salads, I put a variety of things on them, salads seem to be a good way to get a lot of food without too many calories, and a chance to add some protein, today chicken and cheese. It also lets me eat daily pickings from the garden, tomatoes are really coming in nicely now. I rarely put any dressing on the salads, I like blue cheese dressing but find that I like blue cheese crumbles better.

In 1272 BC the first recorded hurling match was played in Ireland. I've watched a few hurling matches on TV, it seems an interesting game. Kind of like lacrosse.

Just turned on the news to see the shooting at the Gilroy Garlic Festival today, terrible news. I have been several times, it was a really fun event.......

I like the salads too. Very versatile. And they pack a lot of nutrient. I’ve been shying away from the dressing as well, too complicated to plus in my macros, and I enjoy a bit of cheese and avocado instead. My food tends to be boring, the same things or types of things together often. I repeat a lot of dishes. I’m a creature of habit.

Ooph, climbed through the gate to bypass heavy security. Thank god they had him within a minute. What a nightmare. Who shoots a 6 year old! What a world...

Another good day.

I have been thinking about an exchange I had with Makaren and some things Cate and others have said. I suppose I am obsessed with keeping exact track of everything I eat and my calorie count. I can be a bit obsessive compulsive and right not directing that into making sure I don't over eat seems important. TM complemented my on my organization, but its not really organization so much as focusing my compulsion on something other than maximizing my calorie intake. I know I tend to say positive things here, and they are true, today was a good day and I do feel a lot better and better about myself than I did before starting this diet. However doing this is not as easy for me as I let on. I still have cravings and I know that at any time I could fall off the wagon. Its happened every other time I have had a successful diet, I live in fear of it happening again this time. I struggle with the food craving compulsion most every day, some days more than once. It does get a little easier to fight off, but I know there is a risk that one day it will catch me in a moment of weakness.

Thinking about it there are two things I am doing differently this time around. First I have accepted that this needs to be a permanent lifestyle change, not something that will end when I reach some goal weight. Secondly I am eating differently, I eat a lot of food, its just low calorie food, most of my previous diets were more like periods of starvation. I am hopeful that this approach will be more sustainable. I do have folks here to thank for advice and direction.

One of the things that has made it clear to me that this has to be a permanent lifestyle change has been reading diaries of people here who lost the weight some time ago and are in a kind of maintenance. Even some people who by my standards did not have a whole lot of weight to lose in the first place. It looks to me like those folks still struggle with eating right and staying healthy. I know if I "make it" this time the only way it will work is to continue the struggle in my own life, it gives me confidence to see others who are doing it.

I did not begin this diet with any real vision as to what it would be, except to eat fewer calories. At first I did kind of go the starvation route, but gradually, much of it as a result of advice from people like LaMa I got into the high fruit and vegetable diet and that seems to be working for me. It is new, I have probably eaten more veggies and fresh fruit in the past 2 1/2 months than in the previous 2 1/2 years.

I mentioned a few of you here, I know I have more folks to thank, please don't think that if your names are not here that I don't appreciate you.

Oh well, enough for tonight's ramble.

In 1150 the town of Neuruppin in Brandenburg, Germany was founded. Not a very well known town, but one I have been to. I had work there in the 90s shortly after the Russians pulled out. I got a tour of the abandoned Russian Tank base, it was a site to see. The Russians destroyed everything of any value before leaving. They drove the tanks through walls, and broke every piece of glass, every plumbing fixture, every light and electrical switch, everything. At least I was told it was the evacuating Russians who had done it, I don't really know; but whoever did it they put a lot of work into that destruction. The cold war ended more peacefully than other wars, but not without its problems.

I don't think any of us are as positive as we may seem. You can't be positive all of the time. I think we all lift one another up. Being able to express our fears & struggles is just as important as logging our achievements. I'm so glad this is working for you, Rob. Acceptance that this has to be a permanent lifestyle change is a huge step. Tough, but important. I still rail against it from time to time. We're just mere mortals!

Yes I have a fierce sugar tooth as well. It is a battle, especially in the evenings. I’ll be adding some fruit to my diet this week, not a lot, but blueberries have always been my favorite and are keto friendly.

I’ve glanced over your journal, and it does seem to be easy for you. Thanks for sharing your weaknesses. I’m learning (awful slowly ha!) that I can deviate when life throws me a curve and get back on the horse.

Last night, I was preparing the chicken and realized right before I threw it in the marinade that it had gone bad. Ugh I hate that.

Today was a good day. I am eating a lot of cherries, we are at the very tail end of the season, any day now I expect them to be gone. Most years they don't last this long, but we had a cool wet spring.

1152 BC might have been the year that the Icelandic volcano Hekla erupted. It caused global cooling for several years and is blamed for crop failures in Egypt. Turns out its not so easy to date volcanoes, there is considerable disagreement over the exact year, some say it plus or minus 34 to 130 years. Kind of like some of my calorie counts I guess.

It´s hard to say when something happened exactly if nobody near the event could write yet and you have to rely on radiometric dating. I´m always thankful when people mention the margin of error and don´t just pretend to know everything.

Cherries? Did you say cherries? I miss cherries in Winter. They are my favourite fruit!
Re: calories. I think we all have to take a guess at those.

How fortunate to live near a cherry orchard! I’m afraid my chin would always be dripping.

It will be sad when the fresh are gone. The lack of fruit is one of the things I hate about the keto diet. I love fruit, especially blueberries. Strawberries, bananas, PEACHES. OH I’d better stop torturing myself.

Nectar of the gods!

287 lbs, down another 2!

I am happy.

It is good to live near fresh fruit, the area I live in is (or was anyway) known as Utah's "Fruit Zone" lots of cherries, peaches, apricots, apples, and some pears. There are a bunch of roadside stands selling them and folks come from all over the area to get fresh produce here. Unfortunately the area is changing with new developments and subdivisions replacing the fruit trees. Our peaches are a remnant part of that. Most of the fruit stands are still here and they still sell produce, but less and less of its grown here.

Oh how sad. Imagine that, bringing in the fruit from somewhere else...

Congrats on the 2 lbs! That’s huge Alligatorob!

Very cool. Psyched for you!

Well Done !
