Alligatorob's Diary

I feel like the better you get, the slower the progress. Do you know what I mean? It all takes a lot of time....

Today did not feel like a good food day, but when I added up the calories it wasn't terrible. Probably missed a few... Exercise was good a little over 3 gym hours.
They're generally fine exercises and adding a bit of adduction to your extension can help but the vastus isn't really active anywhere except during that last bit of extension you didn't have access to for years. Squats and the "standard" adductor machine have most of the muscle activation in deeper knee flexion.
So would it help to try and get as much range of motion as possible?
a lot of quick direction changes where they pivot on a nearly straight knee.
Ha, I do nothing quick these days. And I don't see a lot of competitive sports in my future, LOL.
Sounds like you are continuing on a really good track Rob! Cravings are hard -- good for you not giving in!
Thanks, I suppose our "tracks" look better to others than to ourselves. And I did kind of give in, but not to a binge, so I'll call it success.
Rob. I'm a bit envious of your wild Atlantic salmon. Yum!
The Salmon was what I caught in Canada, all Pacific. I looked it up, in Tasmania you have some Atlantic salmon farms, but in New Zealand they have the Pacific salmon. They both eat just fine!

Atlantic and Pacific salmon: What’s the difference? https://www.ciaanet.org/atlantic-and-pacific-salmon-whats-the-difference/#:~:text=You can see the difference, flesh and more robust flavor.

Yes, and it makes a lot of sense. One place I am seeing progress is in the gym. I just started leg weight exercises last week and have already gone up, still well short of where I was pre-surgery, but getting better. Wish that would translate into my legs feeling better, but they are not worse.

The farming practices in Tasmania are abysmal & we no longer eat farmed salmon. They are polluting our waterways & killing seals. We used to eat it regularly but can no longer ignore the reality of it.

Struggling a bit this afternoon, I sure want to binge, but am going to try posting here instead...
I usually get the opposite surprise when I add up the calories
So do I, yesterday was something of a surprise. Makes me worry I missed something.... I know my calorie counts are not highly accurate, and probably a bit low. However keeping track of things does help me avoid the binge, and that is what's most important.

Didn't know that, it's too bad. Fresh salmon are really nice.

Salmon are an interesting fish, I know most about our Pacific ones. To my knowledge they are not farmed, but we have lots of hatcheries that release young, later caught as "wild". Impossible to tell a hatchery fish from one bread in the wild. There are 4 different species of Pacific salmon, but all have a similar life cycle. That's 4 in the US and Canada, I think there are a couple of Asian species also.

Pacific salmon hatch in freshwater streams, make their way to the Pacific where they spend most of their lives. Ranging over the whole of the Pacific. Once they grow up they swim back to the place they came from, breed and die. Some swim over 1,000 miles up rivers like the Yukon to spawn, they do not feed in fresh water so they need to bring a lot of fat. One consequence is that a lot of the productivity of the Pacific ends up back as the adult salmon. This is why Alaska and other places have such a rich environment. Without the salmon Alaska would be more a frozen wasteland.

Atlantic salmon are different, just one species I think, they are more closely related to trout. I believe the Atlantic salmon can survive spawning and go back to sea for another shot at it. Unlike Pacific most Atlantic salmon we eat are farmed.

I believe salmon are native only to the northern hemisphere, both Pacific and Atlantic. Salmon in the southern hemisphere have been stocked from the north. Salmon are a cold water fish, found in the higher latitudes only. No salmon in Florida.

Didn't binge and ended the day fine. Only problem was the taco time burrito for lunch, not the best, but not awful. Got in some good exercise and a PT session.

I was pleasantly surprised in PT, when they measured my flexion it seems to have improved. 132 and 135 the therapist told me 120 is the objective and the normal range is 135 to the 140s. So I am above the goal, but still a little short of healthy normal. My extension is about the same, 0 degrees but only with pressure.

Therapist also told me it would probably take a year to fully recover. There are several therapists working in the place, and I always ask the same questions. On this one in particular I never get the same answer. In fairness I suspect that is in part due to different definitions of what "fully recovered" means...

I got past the urge to binge this afternoon, that was good.

I didn't know that the different kinds of salmon weren't actually all subspecies of the same group. Lucky for Ken Ham that they can survive in both fresh and salt water, I guess.

100%. There's a big difference between "back to everyday function", "better than before surgery", and "the way I felt when I was 16".

:hurray: Well done, my friend!

I laughed at you asking the different therapists the same questions, like a little Poirot. 😁

Well done on avoiding Bingetown! Never a nice place to visit.

I am just getting started, yesterday was my first day.

I weighed in at 320 lbs, I am thinking my ideal weight is 160, so I have about 160 lbs to lose. I know that is a real long term goal, my immediate goal is to do well today.

I am a 66 year old man who has been overweight all my life. I have lost weight at times, but could never keep it off. Any advice or comments would be welcome.

Yesterday

Breakfast
Oatmeal 150
Raisins 150

Snack
Ideal Shake 120

Lunch
Grits 200

Dinner
Eggplant Parmesan 300
Salad with blue cheese dressing 330

Total 1,250 calories
I love eggplants, this will be a good idea for tomorrow's menu... Thanks!

Food log looks really good Rob! Glad you're feeling better.

We have a few salmon hatcheries and farms here. There's a pretty big debate about the aquaculture industry. Hope you have a good week!

Well I'm back after a few binge days... Same old cycle. Anyway today was a good day, one in a row now!
There's a big difference between "back to everyday function", "better than before surgery", and "the way I felt when I was 16".
Yep, I am finding that out. For me: "back to everyday function" slowly getting there, some things like walking on flat ground I am there and I think I can already climb stairs (going up) pretty well, now if things would just stop hurting... ; "better than before surgery" a few things are, my knee range of motion clearly is, but not really there yet, I can see it coming... ; "the way I felt when I was 16" not in this lifetime!
I didn't know that the different kinds of salmon weren't actually all subspecies of the same group.
All are members of the family Salmonidae, the Atlantic Salmon and Trout are in the genus Salmo. The Pacific Salmon are in the genus Oncorhynchus. So in a sense the Atlantic Salmon is really a sea run trout, but all are Salmon, trout included.
I laughed at you asking the different therapists the same questions, like a little Poirot.
I always like to listen to a variety of opinions, do there here as well. Not sure it always leads to the right decision, but maybe a bit more informed one.
Bingetown! Never a nice place to visit.
Tell me about it...
NIce work Rob!
While it lasted... Thanks anyway!

Hey Zara, I am not sure I have seen you before, but it looks like you've been here a good while. I like eggplant a lot, we grow them in our garden. Are you able to grow eggplant in Malaysia? Interesting choice of my posts to quote, I think it was my first from 3 1/2 years ago. Lots of water under the bridge since then.

Thanks Lingwo, but the food logs only look good because I generally don't log on bad days...

That's right you are Canadian, remind me which part. I went to Port Hardy, British Columbia fishing last summer, I was very impressed.

I'm glad you have returned, Rob. It's much better than staying away. I think we all benefit from posting here, even if at times we just don't want to. The place is not right if you're not here xo

Well it didn't last. I sure get tired of trying to pull out of a binge cycle...

Every morning I wake up swearing to break the cycle, not something new its been with me most of my life. Then I rarely make it to noon... This morning is no different, I woke thinking of the crazy things I might do, like go on a long fast, or only drink protein drinks or something. But I know that doesn't work.

So I am going to try to just eat well, just for today, and not plan too far ahead.

I got up and had a 70 calorie probiotic yogurt drink thing. Then went to the gym for an hour and something. When I got home I had a bowl of a high protein cereal. It's now 9 am, and my limited goal is to make it to lunch without eating anything more.

Exercise has certainly helped me, I find it a lot easier to stay on track with the exercise than food. Can't say I love the gym or exercising, but its not bad. Very different kind of discipline required though. Put in an hour or so at the gym and you have accomplished what needs doing. Eating right on the other hand is a 24/7 full time commitment. Eating right for 23 hours and 50 minutes a day with just one hour of bingeing and its all over. I can eat more calories in 10 minutes than I could possibly burn with exercise...

Anyway here I am now, and hoping to be back, with good news, soon.

I know I do, and I am going to make an effort to keep it up. Thanks Cate!
Especially at those times. When I come here I may try and fail but at least I won't fail as hard as when I don't try at all.
Yep, I sure did not want to post this morning, but I think it has helped already.
One day at a time Rob...that's all we got!
Absolutely!

Eating right for 23 hours and 50 minutes a day with just one hour of bingeing and its all over.
I wouldn't consider it all over with that one hour even if you do go over calories--eating right for those 23 hours would be giving you lots of nutrients that your body needs. I think remebering that all of this isn't just about weight loss, but also about overall health really helps me. If you are exercising and getting lots of good nutritious food in, those are big wins!
That helps me anyways when I end up overdoing the sugar but I at least also included a bunch of healthy meals in along with some exercise...

I get that as well: and as long as my brain vaguely believes that option exists it's a lot more ok with binging, because... well, there's an easy fix when we really want it, right?
Anyway here I am now, and hoping to be back, with good news, soon.
Being back is good news all of itself!

Made the lunch goal, just had a lettuce salad with some leftover turkey on it. May eat a leftover roll as well. Now the goal is getting to supper and eating a decent one.

Thanks Liza, and you are right of course. However I'd bet my binges can beat your "overdoing the sugar". LOL, not sure that's a contest we want to get into.

Yep, my brain has lots of rationales for bingeing. Everything from it will somehow do me good to "oh, what the hell". Maybe one day I will try and list them all...
Being back is good news all of itself!
Thanks, you are a kind lady!
