Alligatorob's Diary

I seem to have trouble remembering to hit the post reply button. Post above was written last night.

Just did 3 hours and a few minutes in the gym, it felt good. Not too tired now.

How's the binge urge?

It was a decent day, I ate well exercised and feel good tonight. But I sure want to binge, got to get to bed first...
I do understand. And I hate that you have to deal with it.
Thanks Llama, I appreciate your words. I suspect you, and others here, have to deal with it as much as I do...

An exhausting day, had the grandkids, friends and cousins over for a bbq went late and I am tired. I did manage to not overeat at the bbq, but sure had a hard time not eating s'mores... but I did it. Otherwise I feel good tonight.

Just got my new fitbit working today, still trying to figure it out. Says I have burned 1,801 calories and walked 2,364 steps but I did not turn it on until after the gym. We will see what it says tomorrow when I will try to wear it all day.
Yup. And I hate that, too.
Yeah, I know we have similar urges, and they are no fun. I have managed not to binge for about 10 days now, but it seems to be getting harder... You have the advantage of youth, many more years to try and figure it out than I. And you have done well so far, I was a lot more overweight at your age, and wasn't even quite aware of the problem. Certainly not so much as you.
The brochures were to try to tempt you to visit one day. We live near lots of attractions & I'm sure you would love Tasmania.
I know I would and I am well tempted! And I'll take the whisky, even without the e, LOL.

Just got back from 3 hours and a few minutes at the gym. Wore my new fitbit, I am still trying to figure it out but I I am reading it right it gave me credit for about 400 calories burned. This is in contract to the MFP estimate of 1,300... I know the MFP thing is wrong, if it had been right over the past couple of years I would no longer exist, LOL.

The 400 calories is lower than I had expected, but might be right, certainly closer than MFP.

The heart rate thing seems low, it says my resting heart rate is 65, and when exercising it seemed to be around 100 most of the time, never above 110. And it did not always seem to go with how I was feeling. There is a heart rate monitor on an exercise bike at the gym, I compared and found the bike said my rate was 125, but the fitbit said 105. The calories burned on the bike actually agreed pretty well with the fitbit.

I have a fitbit inspire 2, the cheapest one and use the free, not upgraded app. Anyone here know anything about them? Seems a cleaver device, I am just wondering about accuracy. Even if not very accurate if it is consistent I can see it will be useful. Oh, and I think the steps thing overestimates, but have nothing to compare to.

It was a good day, ate well, exercised and I feel good tonight. For what it's worth my fitbit says I burned 2,311 calories today and MFP says I ate 1,427. Not sure either number is right, but I am pretty sure I am in a calorie deficit. If I can stay there without bingeing I should lose some weight. We'll see.

2300 kcal burned sounds ballpark realistic at least. I assume the 400 exercise calories are a slight underestimation based on the slight underestimation of your heart rate. If you keep recording your calorie intake and output plus your weight you should be able to tell after a couple of weeks.

It was a decent day, ate well but took a day off from the gym and exercising. I have already done over 14 hours in the gym this week, I think that is good enough. Don't know about tomorrow, may go back to the gym, we'll see what morning brings.

Thanks Llama, that makes sense.

Today with no exercise fitbit says I burned about 1,900 calories, that also seems ballpark. As you say I'll know better in a couple of weeks. Been doing this long enough to know that neither the calorie count nor burn are highly accurate, but I think tracking them helps me in a couple of ways. Most importantly when I am thinking about what and how much I eat it is a bit harder to binge. And they are metrics I can watch every day, and should be good at showing trends.

Assuming your calorie intake numbers are as accurate as you can get them and your running average for weight shows the general trend for ups and downs I'm looking forward to your correction of the fitbit numbers.

A good day, I ate well, exercised, and feel pretty good. According to MFP I consumed 1,442 calories and fitbit says I burned 2,249 as always the numbers are not likely very accurate, but I think I had a decent deficit.

It will be interesting to track, if I can average a calorie deficit of around 500 per day I think I should lose about a pound a week. It will take at least 2 weeks, maybe longer, to see if I am anything close to that.

I know I am eating significantly more calories than I did when I was in my big weight loss. I averaged a little more than 2 lbs a week for that year and almost a half, and probably had more like a 1,000 calorie a day deficit. I think this is better, but some days I do feel a bit impatient. I know I really need to keep my eyes on the no binge goal, lot more important than how many pounds I lose...

I was going to say these aren't that much more calories but then I remembered you hovered around 1000/day for a while  This is definitely better.

Today was a good day, ate well, exercised and I feel good tonight. MFP says I ate 1,425 calories and fitbit says I burned 2,469, I am not sure I really had a 1,000 calorie deficit, but I know it was a deficit.

Yeah, actually I think I averaged a bit below 1,000 for over a year. Trying not to do that again.

Just spent 3 hours at the gym and feel good. Did a cycling class, weight training with my trainer, and a Tabata class. And as usual a few miscellaneous exercises in between, I don't like to stop.

Learning a bit more about my fitbit, it tracks minutes "in the zone" which I believe means fat burning zone. Today of the 180 minutes I was at they gym the fitbit showed 103 minutes in the zone. The biggest part of those came in the cycling class, only about 15 min of the weight training qualified, and maybe a bit over half of the Tabata time. Yesterday I got only 69 minutes in the zone, no cycling class. Guess some of my exercises are not vigorous enough for fitbit, LOL. I am not surprised by this, I know much of my workout is less vigorous than others, probably the only way I can get 3 hours.

I know all the exercises are good for me, and all burn calories, I think the fitbit thing is a bit arbitrary, but it gives me something quantitative to follow.
It's funny: I nagged at you so much about your low calories and STILL forgot about them.
Even if you don't I do remember your "nagging", and it was much appreciated. LOL

Llama nagging always welcome here!

I feel that my fitbit is not as generous with exercise calories as I would be inputting what I have done, so am happy with it. I like that it goes on your heart rate. Well done on 2 weeks without binging, Rob :)
