ok i know there are alot of drinkers here. lets talk about our alcohol consumption and how we deal with it to still loose weight. I have been reading about drunkorexia and such and want to start a dialog.

I add all my cals up with fitday and that includes every shot i drink.

I would say I drink like 3 times a week. around 6-8 shots a time. anyone else like me?

1 ounce of most distilled spirits is 85 calories - a shot is 1 1/2 ounces

so that's about 120 calories in a shot

6 shots is over 700 calories - that's an awful lot of calories to blow...

I play in a darts league one night a week - and will have 2 guinness's -

I much prefer my calories tocome from good tasting food

I will drink a glass of wine once a week, but you have to be careful because your body will convert like it does sugar. Plus, those are "empty" calories.

And if the health consequences weren't enough.... looking physically 'good' and healthy isn't just a matter of being in a caloric deficit. Think about it.

totally get where ur coming from! In my studenty days i would purposely not eat dinner so that i could use the calories for drinking when i was clubbing..The added 'bonus' being that it was easier to feel drunk. I feel really stupid for doing that now cos i realise how much damage i may have done to my poor liver!

I still enjoy wine (too many calories - over 900 in each bottle!) but have switched to spirits, and cut my consumption wayyyy down. I feel much better at the weekends, my skin looks better and i dont miss feeling hungover at all!! No need to sto[p completely but alcohol is def not a substitute for healthy food :D:D:D

I'm a BIG fan of the drink. :hurray: I make my own beer and mead. :cheers2: I have on hand never less then 10 cases of wine. I probably have about 10 bottles of good scotch and whiskey in varying degrees of fullness. I love to drink, but I don't like to drink too much. If I have more then three drinks on a given night, that would be a lot. I rarely will drink more then one night a week.

If you really like to drink, go for quality, not quantity. If you have to "shoot" a shot, then why are you even doing it? :puke: Get the good stuff. Sure it will cost you more, but you can savor it; really enjoy it. Also, you won't have all the calories.

lol drunkorexia, I had to look that up. That would never work for me, one glass of wine and I'm heading for the bakery at Whole Foods.

What I don't understand is why people drink shots, the only possible reason for it is to get drunk.

If I am going to have alcohol I will enjoy the taste!

If I drink ANY alcohol it will be a glass of Pinot Noir or a Gin and Tonic with Lime, low cal and they actually taste good. A small glass of red is only 100 calories, when i can afford good wine im going to have a glass of red every night - it has plenty of health benefits.

By the way - Alcohol cant be processed as fat right? It just passes through you? But Alcohol has to be processed first, and all the fatty food you eat with alcohol won't be burnt off. Thats what makes you fat right? Not the alcohol

Sometimes a shot can be a delicious treat. I went to a Russian place a few weeks ago that specialized in infused vodka's. The garlic and horseradish infused vodka shots chased with a dill pickle was a very tasty treat. Though after 4 I had a pretty good buzz, but that wouldn't stop me from doing it again :drool5:.

I was drinking with a Ukrainian couple a while back and found out that it is their custom that the 3rd and 21st shot is to LOVE. You gotta wonder about when there are rules for the 21st shot. Oh, and the last shot is for HORSES, which is the equivalent of one for the road.

Heh? Alcohol has calories. Food you eat with it has calories. If you take in more calories than your body uses, you'll gain weight. If you don't, you won't. There's no magic about what calories can and can't be converted to fat.

Whoa, 21 shots! I was pretty much toast after 4, though it didn't stop me from drinking 5-6 more martini's with dinner and at the concert I attended.

I just make adjustments in my intake to accomodate the additional calories from alcohol. I can take in roughly 3000 cal before I'm break even so I have a lot of room to play. I've yet to gain back a pound and I've played pretty hard a few weekends, some have included Mexican food and margarita's. If I plan to go out and consume high cal foods and alcohol I skip a snack and eat a light but healthy lunch. One day of that here and there isn't going to kill me and the satisfaction of having my cake and eating it too is worth it for me.

I have been known to be a pretty big drinker, usually beer, but I deal with it in a much different way... I dont do it. I used to have at least 2 beers a day when I got home from work/school. But, I had to make a choice, drink all that beer and try and make up for it in excercise (which I dont have much time for), eating less food or stop drinking. I basically stopped drinking.

Are you sure?

Im pretty sure I read somewhere that alcohol just CANT be processed as fat, it's like fibre (but not you know) that just passes through you.

I could be very very wrong, but I always thought it was what you ATE with alcohol not the alcohol itself.

I was trying to find an answer to this. The best I saw was that alcohol doesn't get processed like other calories, so they don't really count. No place did it talk about what kind of alcohol they were referring to. Beer contains a lot of things other then alcohol that contains real calories. Beer makers call them adjuncts. Same with wine (residual sugars). I think that distilled spirits only contain trace amounts, but since this was left out it makes me think that the studies are suspect.

How do you explain fibre then? Fibre wont ever be processed as fat because it is part of the plant that is indigestable.

What I've heard regarding alcohol is that is produces certain toxins that are your body's first priority to get rid of. Since your body is busy getting rid of these toxins, it doesn't burn as much fat therefore more fat is stored. Overall, it significantly reduces one's ability to burn fat. I don't know all the nitty gritty details and I honestly don't feel like looking them up right now. I'd definitely look into this theory though.
