Addie's New Beginning

Nice job forcing yourself out of bed. I admire all you people who decide to work out IN THE MORNING. You have so much more determination than me ... I never get up! :)

I like to keep some snacks like cheese or peanut butter around if I'm not getting enough calories. PB on an apple or an ounce or two of cheese are a good way to add a couple hundred healthy calories if I'm short, plus get some protein.

I've decided that I'm going to focus on one or two things that I would like to change and work on them until I believe that I have them under control, and then gradually incorporate other changes as I progress.

That is an awesome way to go about it and you are doing so good! Those morning workouts are awesome - they just make you feel so good all day and therefore I find I make better eating choices too because I look at it as Ive already done so good by getting up and exercising that I can't ruin it on bad food otherwise it will feel like a waste. I love the hula hoop work out on the Wii Fit - I got to get it out again and play. I asked for the new one for xmas so that will motivate me to get on it again. Keep it up and stay consistent and those pounds are going to melt off! Great work so far!

Thanks for the tip, that's a great idea because I'm almost never getting enough protein lately :p

I'm hoping to get the new WiiFit game for xmas, too. Hopefully I'll get it ... I love the original and it's been really helpful :D

Last night right as I laid down to go to bed, the room was spinning ... it was like the worst parts of being drunk without the good parts. I had a hard time getting to sleep because everything was so ... swirly. Then, when I woke up this morning I had a terrible headache (likely from lack of sleep, I'm guessing).

I took some medicine and started to feel a bit better.

I really feel like I hit my caloric "sweet spot" today. I felt much better strength-wise during my workout, and I even had the endurance to do an hour instead of just 30 minutes. After my workout I didn't have any trace of headache anymore and I felt a lot better overall. I had a large breakfast this morning, and I really think that helped out a ton with the way that I was feeling. I went a little overboard on fats, but in general I think that I did fairly well today as far as my ratio is concerned. I still have a hard time getting in enough protein, but I think that I may get some of Kara's recommended Nectar Whey Protein Isolate (Roadside Lemonade). Sounds tasty :)

I went to a friend's house a few nights ago and she gave me a bunch of extra pictures she had of me from high school -- most of them about 80-100lbs. ago, and it was really eye-opening. As I've gotten bigger, I haven't really noticed any big, drastic change from the way that I looked in high school ... but seeing actual candid photos of myself from then, I could really see the difference.

I took my measurements today to log on fitday.com just for fun to see if I had lost anything (I also did them on Friday) and several of the measurements are at least half an inch smaller, so that's pretty awesome for it only being a few days.

I have to go into work early tomorrow, and I'm a bit concerned about what that will mean for my workout. Hopefully I'll still get up early and do it, but that means 5:30am opposed to the usual 6:30am. It makes a big difference ... :(

That's awesome you are already starting to lose some inches! Keep it up and the weight will come off. You sound determined and that is half the battle - you should put some of those old pics on your fridge for motivation - I like to hang target clothes by my bed too and find that helps when the alarm goes off in the morning to remind myself why I want to do it. Right now I have the dress I picked out to wear at my shag next weekend and it's been doing the trick all week. Have a great weekend and I'll check back Monday to see how you made out over the weekend - stay strong! :seeya:

No big update today, ... today was my birthday and I definitely took the opportunity to have a "relaxed" day for eating. (Mmmm cake!)

I got in 3 miles/1 hour and some change on the WiiFit, though, so that was good.

Lost 2.6lbs this week, bringing me to 324.4, which pretty much equals out to having lost my first "10lbs." in a little about 28 days.

My small town has a festival every year, and 2010 will mark the 100th anniversary of this event (it is in mid-to-late August 2010) and my plan is to lose 100lbs. by the time that event comes. I thought that was a fun idea, and it's a pretty reasonable pace (about 2.85lbs. per week).

Anyway, just thought I'd make a quick note about my day, hopefully I'll get my regular entries rolling again soon.

EDIT: I just looked at my ticker and realized that I have less than 150lbs. to go ... I could totally realistically do this in less than a year and a half ... that's freaking awesome! :D

Awesome! Seems like you have a pretty healthy idea about losing the weight, so I'm sure if you just stick to it and keep thinking lifestyle change you'll get there!

You don't drink diet soda either? Do you drink anything but water?

Keep on rocking! :hurray:

I haven't had "regular" soda for months. I had only been drinking diet soda, however, even though the calories/sugar weren't the problem, my issues with the soda were 1. being reliant on the caffeine, and 2. it would just make me crave more and more sweets. So I figured it would be easiest to cut it out altogether. This doesn't mean I'll never drink a soda again, but I'd prefer not to consume more than MAYBE one a week, or less.

I primarily drink water. Occasionally, I'll drink a glass of milk or a glass of juice. Usually, however, it's just water. Most of the time when I get bored with it plain, I'll add a crystal light packet (usually the "hunger satisfaction" kind with 30cals., 3g protein and 6g carbs to fend off hunger for a bit).

Wow.. you are doing so great! I just read through your whole journal and I can see that you are being consistent... no doubt about it, you WILL reach your goal! Your meals sound really balanced and you're incorporating a lot of different kinds of food. That chicken avacado sandwich thing you made sounded sooo yummy!

Congrats on losing the first 10 pounds! That is a great accomplishment. And keep it up with the work outs! Every little bit counts!

Never heard of the "hunger satisfaction" stuff. I used to drink cystal light but since I'm giving up artificial sweeteners this month I stopped. Do you know if that kind has asparatime in? or nutrisweet? I was just curious b/c I'm only drinking water now and find it hard to get enough sometimes since its so cold out.

INGREDIENTS: INULIN (FOR FIBER), WHEY PROTEIN ISOLATE (FROM MILK), CITRIC ACID, ASPARTAME*, CONTAINS LESS THAN 2% OF NATURAL FLAVOR, SOY LECITHIN, ACETYLATED MONOGLYCERIDES, MAGNESIUM OXIDE, DIMETHYLPOLYSILOXANE, RED 40. CONTAINS: MILK, SOY. *PHENYLKETONURICS: CONTAINS PHENYLALANINE.

So, yes, it does have aspartame in it, unfortunately. I don't want to rely on using them forever, but for now they're decent for me to have in between meals and snacks. I was probably drinking 5-6 diet cokes a day before now, and at most I will have one Crystal Light thing a day, and I skip some days, so it's probably more like having it 3-4 times a week.

I'm pretty impressed that you were able to kick sodas the way you have. I eat pretty well usually, but soda is my achilles heel. : / So, awesome job with that!

I'm pretty happy with today. I got VERY close to an ideal ratio, which is good. It means I'm improving and getting a better understanding of what I need to be eating to keep it balanced. I could have gone a little lighter on the fat, but honestly it was pretty low until I had the sweet potato fries (actually until I had the oil that they were fried in). They were really good though :drool5: ...

Anyway, I my diet was a little rough this weekend, I think going into Friday I got into "super-strict" weigh-in time mode and the next few days I felt really ravenous for all sorts of junk. Plus I had leftover cake from my birthday party ... ugh. I wound up having a piece of cake on Friday and one on Saturday, but really, looking back on my past ... that was a WHOLE lot better than the usual outcome of eating like half the cake. Blech. I had a bit of salt, and my water consumption was low too, so I wasn't all that surprised when I hopped on the Wii-Fit this morning and it said I gained 4.6lbs. in 2 days. I'm pretty sure it's a salt thing, though, and I'm hoping it'll work its way out by the time Friday comes around. I also didn't work out Saturday OR Sunday. I had every intention of working out on Sunday, and then realized that I couldn't find my mp3 player and went on a desperate search for it and cried when I couldn't find it, etc. And then we found it a few hours later, on the KITCHEN COUNTER nearly in plain sight. *sigh* I don't know why I was so stressed out this weekend, but I was really tense.

I've been having to go into work early part of last week and until further notice, which makes getting up to exercise much, MUCH harder. I only got in 20 minutes this morning ... it really sucked. I wanna try to get up and do an hour tomorrow, I'm hoping. I did go down to the local gym tonight and spoke to a couple of the women in charge. They're really nice and we talked for a long time. They're running an amazing special where basically I'll have full access to the gym for the rest of this month and all the way through March for $80. It's pretty awesome, I think I'd be a total bonehead to pass it up.

They asked me about my goals, and I told them that totally ideally I would like to lose a total of 100lbs. (including the 9.6 I've already lost) by mid-August when our town festival is. But, I told them that I was going to set mini-goals and that my first of those is to lose my remaining 25ish pounds and be under 300 by Valentine's Day. They said that they were actually pretty realistic goals if I can stay committed and on top of things.

I'm pretty excited (albeit a little nervous) about it. The biggest concern I have is how foreign most of the machines look. I mean I remember using most of the machines that are there back in high school and learning about them all, but that was nearly 10 years ago and I am clueless now. But they said that the trainer will help orient you with all the equipment, so I'm sure I'll be a pro in no time. ;)

Thanks, Sarah! I have to admit, it means a lot to me to have an unbiased reader tell me that I'm doing well, especially when it comes to a balanced diet. I have been a little weary that I'm doing something wrong (because it has been so simple, really) but the results say I'm doing it right, so I'll just keep up what I've been doing, lol Thanks for the vote of confidence!

Damn Girl, 10 lbs! You're going to beat me soon at that rate :p

Way to go! Wow..

Thank you, I'm pretty happy with my success so far. I've got a lot of wonderful people here to inspire me! ;)

I'm pretty impressed that you were able to kick sodas the way you have. I eat pretty well usually, but soda is my achilles heel. : / So, awesome job with that!

Thanks, Andy. It's not easy, that's true. It is a lot easier for me because I never really drank soda because I NEEDED it, like the way I crave some things. I was never really attached to it, I more drank it out of convenience because it was always in the house and in an individual bottle. I know that quitting soda is something that's a lot harder for someone like my brother. He drinks soda all the time, he loves it, and I'm sure it would be much more difficult for him.

I almost think that guys have a harder time with soda struggles. I'm really not sure why, but it seems like all the guys I know who have tried to quit soda have a much harder time and much higher likelihood of falling back into the habit than the women I know who have kicked the habit. I wonder if there is something about the male physiology that makes it more difficult. I'm not sure.

But yes, it's hard. A lot of people can gradually wein themselves off of soda ... I'm not that kind of person. I'm a "cold turkey" kind of person. I know that if I ever was a smoker, I'd have to quit cold turkey. It's much easier to convince myself to never have something again than it is for me to do it in moderation. Eventually I know I'll be able to have soda every once in a while, but for the time being I know that I'm better off staying away from it until I'm ready.

That reminds me ... my longest I've ever gone without soda before this (since I was pregnant, at least) was 6 weeks ... and it was grueling. I'm almost at that point now and it doesn't feel like it has been even CLOSE to that long. I'm betting that the diet changes and exercises which are boosting my energy levels are the reason why it seems so much easier this time.

lol ... sorry for the tangent. But thanks for commenting.

Thanks to everyone who is responding or even just reading. This forum has changed me a lot already, and I look forward to sharing my experiences with the people that I've been meeting here. You are all wonderful <3

Yeah, I think you may have a point there with guys having a harder time to quit it. I still just can't quit diet Soda, and I still drink too much!

I remember when I was in a boot camp/military type thing for 6 weeks when I was a teenager, that was tough! I lost 36 lbs in 6 weeks! It was grueling. Anyway, that's a whole another story! But we only drank water. And after about 5 weeks without soda, when you finally have one, the carbonation in it is completely overpowering! Seriously, you can barely drink it. I think we forget how strong it can be.

Awesome work so far and good job setting some goals for yourself! If you keep it up and stay consistent I bet you will get to your first goal no problem - you've already lost 10 pounds so that is a great start! I like your food journal and have gotten some ideas - I love sweet potato fries too but I usually bake mine in the oven and crisp them up on broil - saves a couple calories. Take care and keep it up - thanks for visiting my journal and leaving such nice comments!! Have a great day!

This is how I feel today: :piggy::piggy::piggy::piggy::piggy::piggy:

Haha, I love that smiley. But seriously. I've been eating reasonably well since Monday, and I worked out both Monday and Tuesday, and yet this morning it looks like I've put on at least 5 extra pounds. It's making me really nervous about Friday's weigh-in! I don't want to have gained weight ... a small loss or even maintaining, I can handle that. But a gain would be really disappointing. I'm committed to this regardless of what happens, but I can't say I won't be sad about it if I gained.

I haven't been doing too well with keeping my food written down in my little notebook, but I've been keeping track of it on fitday.com pretty well. I can see myself becoming a little less diligent about it, though.

Ugh, I think I'm just having a bad day. Something about waking up in the morning and looking especially crappy just ruins your whole day. :banghead:

Keep up the hard work! As long as you know you did your best (enough water, honest workouts, eating right) you really can't be disappointed with what the scale tells you. We both know our bodies are kinda crazy the way they sometimes retain water, and other days dont. I know personally one week I'll be down .5lbs, and the next week itll be 3-4 lbs, so its all pretty relative :p

Kudos to you for writing down everything you are eating! Its a really good habit to get into.
