About to give up!

Well, I'm getting to about the time to where I'm about to give up on this whole idea of getting into shape. Maybe some people just aren't meant to be slim and just need to accept the fact that I'm overweight, and will always be overweight.

Well here's the story:

About 10 months ago I took a good hard look at myself and decided that it was time to do something about my weight, not only for health reasons, but also for self esteem reasons. I weighed in at a whopping 250lbs @ 5'9, about 80lbs overweight. I started off going on a crash diet, eating next to nothing and after 2 weeks, got me down to about 235lbs. I eventually figured that I wouldn't be able to keep up this fad and that I needed to change my lifestyle all together, make healthy choices, monitor what I eat, and get some exercise in my daily routine. I joined a gym and had my BMR/RMR measured. I came in @ about 2200 calories at rest. I started hitting the weight and cardio about 3-4 days per week religiously. I dropped to about 210lbs and the lbs started dropping slowly..eventually I got to 202 and I plateaued. Here's where it got interesting. I tried increasing the duration and intensity of my workouts but to no avail, still @ 202 lbs. I tried upping my calories from 1600-1800 calories to about 2000-2200 to no avail, still 202 lbs. This went on for about 2-3 months. I spoke with Steve and I decided to take a week off and eat normally. After the week was up, I had my RMR tested again, and I came in @ 2100 calories. I started gradually lowering my calories again and noticed a drop....I dropped to about 199lbs, and I've been @ 199lbs for about a month now. Now here's where it gets interesting...I hurt my shoulder, so I have been unable to do any form of weightlifting of what so ever (Wasn't working anyway), so I decided that since I've got all this fat on my stomach, that I would crank up my cardio workouts and do it most days....Right now for about 1.5 weeks, I've been religiously running every night, 6 nights per week, for about 2 miles. I play tennis during the day with my wife and I do alot of yardwork as well. I eat about 1400-1800 calories per day (trying to keep it @ 1000 calorie deficit) and to my frustration, is still @ 199 lbs. What really pisses me off is that there are people pigging out with no self-control or dicipline of whatsoever and they look the same way as I do..But I do without some of my favorite foods, I work my ass off trying to get a good days work in, I watch everything I eat, I count calories, I weigh my food . I should look damn good but unfortunately, I don't. I don't know what else to do...I cut calories, weight stays the same, I increase, still nothing...I work out harder, nothing...I work out longer..and still 199lbs. I take breaks, and nothing...I am running out of ideas and is VERY close to just giving up. I'm afraid that cosmetic surgery remaining the only untested area right now...I don't want to do it, but I can't keep doing this and not see results. Now I'm going to wait until Sunday, which adds another week of this..And I'm gonna weigh myself..If I weigh more than at least 197 lbs, then I don't know what im gonna do.

Stats: 23 years old
Body type: Mesomorph
Height: 5'9 - 5'10
Weight: 198 lbs
Shirt size: Medium mostly, some Large
Pants size: Most 34 jeans, 36 slacks

hey clover!!

hate to put it this way, but you are upset over no good reason. i mean by my calculations you have lost 51 pounds in 10 months meaning roughly 1 pound a week. you are doing great on the plan you have now and have no reason to give up and quit! perhaps with the "fad diet" you may have skewed your metabolism a bit and will take a while until that is regulated. anyway your plan so far seems to be succeeding and theres no reason to despair!! wish you all the best and hope that you continue down the path to a healthier you :)

I've lost 4 pounds in the last 4 months. Please don't say thats normal. While I am happy about my overall accomplishment, it's the lack of weightloss the last 1/3'rd of the year. 1 lb per month isn't normal, something is wrong here.

Don't give up!! You can have the body you want. Maybe you should go to a nutritionist, maybe there is a reason why your dieting is not working. Maybe mix up your work outs and try something new? Just look at the before and after pictures on this website! You can be another one of those people who gets to their goal!

About the second thing that I quoted. I think this is a really back way to look at your diet and exercise. You can't think about what other people can do. I have been reading the Beck diet solution (really motivational and enlightening) and she discussed how most thin people do restrict themselves in some way. sometimes they eat smaller portions or choose healthier foords than they would like and accept these limitations without too much struggle. they just don't think about it as much. They may say they don't have to work at it but that is because it has become habitat. They don't finish their plates and don't think too much about their next meal. You may see a skinny person chow down on a donut but chances are they do not always eat like that and they may make up for it late by having a smaller meal later. You have to train your body to act like this without having to think or feel bad about it. I used to hate that most of my friends could eat what they wanted and would have so many snacks and what not and were still so skinny, but I did realize that for normal meals they definitely ate less and compensated later.

Definitely read the book if you would like motivation...trust me theres nothing in it for me if you do. My mom read it and then bought it for me and I like it. You may hate it. I dunno. It is not a diet plan but deals with changing negative thoughts and helping establish a lifestyle that makes dieting easier. I hope this helps!!

Good luck and please don't give up!!

try changing the types of exercise you do. Switch from running to swimming etc.

Your body adapts and gets used to what you are doing so you need to shake it up some :)

This is good advice. This is how I live my life. Constantly challenge your body.

Have you tried things like

- rock climbing, tree climbing
- diving, surfing
- horse riding
- tennis
- football

If there is somewhere you can climb mountains I would recommend this, or hiking. You can see a difference in your body in a week (and feel it) no matter your size.

so! they still get emails notifying them!! :D
and its worthy advice for anyone else in the same boat (and a lot of people are!)

Don't give up! I lost 50 pounds and then have been stuck at the same weight for 2 years. I tried to convince myself that I should accept my body the way it is but the truth is, I DON'T WANT TO! If you still honestly feel you have some weight to lose and want to, don't give up, just change up what you're doing. I started a blog to help keep me accountable and refocused every single day. If you can't workout the way you were, find ways to workout that don't involve your shoulder. Then try out some different approaches to diet. I tend to workout way too much and then give up so this time around I'm focusing on diet and enjoying my workouts. I've been looking into and following lean-protein, healthy carbs and fats eating styles. Similar to South Beach and The Zone. Don't give up now or you'll be like me in 2 years wishing you had just pushed through. I know it really sucks at times but take a break for a day and then get pumped up to keep going! Try some new things. You can do it!
