Sorry I've been absent, but I'm dealing wtih a crossroads in my life. Can anyone give me some perspective??
I need some advice. for the past four years, I've worked part time coordinating a family literacy grant at an elementary school two days a week. It's great balance for me. And it keeps my foot in the door of a really outstanding school district. My husband has a precarious job and if he were to lose it, I could get a full time job in the fall and we could survie on my salary no problem. However, I'm losing my job at the end of the school year. Politicians don't want to give $ to empower the disenfranchised, so our grant is on the chopping block. (Sorry to editorialize - it's just that I see all the growth our families make toward getting out of the cycle of poverty and I can't believe the program wouldn't be expanded rather than cut!!)
The word has gotten out that I might be up for grabs next year, and I've gotten 4 offers. I'm having a hard time choosing. It's scary, really. Can you give me the perspective?
1. Adult Education - out of the classroom; curriculum planning; staff training; etc. Flexible hours somewhat, no sub plans if I'm out. I'd be working for a friend (the principal) who I like. Actually, that's the situation with all four offers.
2. Part time fifth grade teacher - I'd work 2 or 3 days a week; job share w/ another mom. The school is wildly different from any school I've been at. Only 4% of the population is learning English! 70% is white, less than 5% is on free and reduced lunch. Crazy demographics I've never seen! Even though it doesn't have need, it doesn't have picky parents either. It's just a nice, sleepy school. 400 students (smaller than any school I've been at) with two classes per grade level. The principal has said that if I come, she'd guarantee spots for my girls when they start school. There's on-site after & before school care.
3. Jr. High ESL - another job share. I'd do 2 or 3 days a week. I don't know much, but it would be teaching pretty much the same thing all day. I'd have maybe two preps per day. A bit of grading. I do not know a thing about Jr. High and neither does the person who wants to job share w/ me.
4. Job share 2nd grade at my current school. I'd do 3 days a week . I'd be w/ the person who I've been job-sharing with for the past 3 years. Good and bad. I have a lot of respect for her. Smart, hard-working. Problem is, she lacks confidence in herself and relies on me a LOT. Has to run every decision past me, constantly needs reassuring, etc. Frankly, it gets exhausting. It is at my school which I know teaching the population that I know. It's not, however, certain that this will turn into an actual opening. It depends on numbers.
So, what do you think? Any thoughts or perspective would be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance!!
