a long road

Hi,

My name is Ethan, I'm 27 male and currently 378 pounds. I switched to a vegetarian (almost vegan with the exception of milk in coffee) diet a little over seven weeks ago. I think I started at about 400 but, I didn't have a scale until three weeks ago and first weighed in at 390. I'm currently eating around 2500 calories a day (+- 100 calories). I have been walking more lately but have no exercise routine to speak of and my lifestyle could easily be considered sedentary. Also, I quit smoking 4 months ago.

My question is how many calories should I try to eat for the quickest sustainable weight loss? Daily plate and nutrition data recommended about 3900 for maintenance, does that sound right to you guys/gals? I'm hoping to lose about 3pounds a week if that isn't too extreme.

Thanks

There is a sticky in the nutrition forum that goes into the calculations behind figuring your calories.

If you want a fairly reliable shortcut, multiply your current weight by 10 and eat that many calories per day. That should get you a loss of about 1% of your current body weight per week, which is a healthy goal to shoot for.

Hey Ethan,

Try sticking your personal details (weight, height, gender, age) into this and let us know what you find out. This should give you a good bottom end number to consider.

Let us know

result of BMR calculator

the calculator said "You have a BMR of 3113.64."

Ok, so BMR is what you burn if you simply stare at the ceiling all day having never moved or left your bed, right?

If i'm eating 2500 calories a day (usually a little less 2300-2400) how much should I expect to lose a week? I've been tracking my weight and calorie intake for almost 4 weeks and I've lost 12 pounds. Does 12 pounds in 4 weeks sound right for the following stats or am I missing calories in my calculations?

Male
27yrs
5'9"
378lbs
sedantary
eating 2500 calories per day

If you have experimentally found that your current diet results in a loss of 3 pounds per week, I see no reason to change anything. One percent of your current weight per week is over 3 pounds, so you are within a healthy rate of weight loss. The BMR calculations are only to get you in the ballpark and should be adjusted based on results anyway.

Ditto what Harold said. If you feel comfortable losing three pounds a week....awesome. If you find it to hard....adjust for a 1 or two pound a week loss. Take all the time you need to feel comfortable with it.
You might have a goal to reach a certain weight by a certain time....but I think the important part is being comfortable while you are doing it.

BTW...I think you are doing fantastic!! Keep up the great work and look forward to your progress. You are a great motivator to many of us!

results this month...

Hi,

Thanks to everyone who has posted in this thread. I really feel a sense of support and community in using this site.

Anyway, 4/6/10 - I was 390.2lbs
5/6/10 - I am 377.2lbs

or 13lbs for the month, that is weight loss rate I can be very happy with! For the first time in my life I feel like weight loss is something I'm in control of, something I can do.

Good job man, you're doing great! It's going to be a long haul and it sounds like you've got the mentality in place to stick with it for the long run. Keep going! :)

yep

Thanks for the encouraging words. Down to 375 today 5/11/10. I'm sure this is a foolish question but, how does one add the weight/goal tracker to the bottom of one's posts?

on going...

I'm down to 370.2lbs today (5/25/10). That makes for 20lbs lost since I started weighing myself on 4/6/10. I'm looking forward to losing the next 20lbs.

Hey! You are doing awesome!!! :) It's been very motivating to read this thread :) I made my weight tracker on Tickerfactory.com. Way to go on all your success so far!

update

Thanks to everyone for your kind words and encouragement. Today (6/12/10) I weighed in at 360.2lbs, which puts me at a total of 30lbs lost since i began weighing myself at 390.2lbs. Today feels good, a small milestone has been reached. My first big goal is to break 300 by 1/2/11, my birthday. I wish luck and drive to everyone else out there who are changing their lives for the better.
