A fat man and a marathon

Two things. First, I'm just going to have to count calories the rest of my life, because losing weight and staying motivated is so much easier that way. Two, protein shakes are like the best thing ever!

Ate healthy delicious food all day. Just ran 3 miles and it felt great! Oh, and I lost 5 pounds sleeping last night. I must've been dreaming about running!

Breakfast - Honey Nut Cheerios, Milk
330 calories

Snack - Banana, piece of nerd gum
125 calories

Lunch - 12" Turkey Subway sub
580 calories

Dinner - Tuna, Rice, Veggies, Salsa
370 calories

Snack - Most delicious shake ever!
550 calories

1955 calories

Recipe for a party in your mouth: 1 cup milk, 1 cup water, 1 chopped banana, 1 scoop chocolate protein powder, 1 scoop strawberry cream protein powder, some ice. I'll never need chocolate again! I think I may need one every day ... just for the 59 grams of protein of course. :)

NO more pizza for one full week, we keep jogging and compare notes next Wednesday? ha ha I'm serious!!

Deal!

Geez that does sound good. I used to make shakes and should get back into it. I've got the whey protein powder (chocolate flavor!) and a blender, but I need to get busy and buy those other ingredients.

Another day of great food choices MM.

Just read this on another forum:

From Dean Karnazes' book Ultramarathon Man:

"Most dreams die a slow death. They're conceived in a moment of passion, with the prospect of endless possibility, but often languish and are not pursued with the same heartfelt intensity as when first born. Slowly, subtly, a dream becomes elusive and ephemeral. People who've let their own dreams die become pessimists and cynics. They feel that the time and devotion spent on chasing their dreams were wasted. The emotional scars last forever. 'It can't be done,' they'll say when you describe your dream. 'It'll never happen.'"

Remember the passion behind your goals. And don't become a cynical bastard!

I love that!! Thanks for sharing :)

I think I'm finally at a place where I just had my first easy run. I remember thinking it was crazy when people would say they took a 3 mile easy relaxing run. But that's what I just did! Zoned out, took it easy and jammed to my music at a steady 11:46/mile clip. Work ALL day tomorrow, so it's my day off, then a 6 mile long run Saturday in the single digit temps. Yay!

No matter how crappy I feel or how much I curse myself for making myself do it, or even how shitty my run goes, I ALWAYS feel better when I'm done. It's the best medicine out there.

Running Shoes

Heard an article on the news that normal running shoes are actually bad for you as they change the way you run, ie heel hits the ground first causing more shock to travel up the lower le to the knee. Instead they recommended flat shoes !!
Any ideas/thoughts on this ?

Actually, they noted that barefoot runners has a stride that is easier on the joints cause you tend to step down with other parts of the foot first instead of the heel like in shoes.

They do recommend not running barefoot if you are not use to it. Ease your way into it was their recommendation.

Yeah, and I'm running tomorrow morning. I think it's supposed to be like 1 degree outside. I think I'll be needing my shoes. :)

Ran 6 miles again. Felt pretty good except the last mile was hell and me feet were really sore after. Probably just need better socks and to use some bandaids. Walked a like 3 times for a minute or two. I want to run the whole thing but there are some BIG friggin hills. Fairly happy w/ it though.

EDIT: Ate 4 chocolate covered pretzels. Up to 2020 for the day.

Ran 2 miles this morning and signed up to do a hilly 10K in Lake Geneva on Saturday with my running partner. Yay! Except I HATE hills.

Ate about 2400 calories. That put's me maybe 300 or so over for my 14,000 goal for the week. Super excited to weigh in tomorrow since I haven't been able to step on a scale in almost a week! Should have dropped quite a few pounds though.

Totally blew off my scheduled cross-training. I was so into lifting weights for a bit, but now that I'm focused on running all the time and training, I'm finding I'd much rather spend my time running. But I did just work 24 hours straight, so I guess I deserve a night off. And I've had a perfect week otherwise. Start another week in the AM.

Going to up my calories this week to 15,000, run at least 18 miles, and do my full body weight lifting next Monday. Oh, and kick ass in my 5K!

Been super busy ... getting 60 hours of OT on my next check, but now my hours are cut back again. Should follow up w/ my fellow weight loss peeps tomorrow for sure! :)

Weighed in at 285.5. Not sure what I started at last week, but had to have lost a good 7 pounds. Curious to see what kind of weight I'll lose this week now that I've settled back into my routine before tinkering with my calories anymore.

Have you tinkered with your food intake when working such crazy hours?

No, not really. I have a very chill job with plenty of free time and when I work overnight they're sleeping shifts so it doesn't mess up my schedule. The hard part is bringing all my meals with. For example I left the house Sunday at 9:00 am and didn't get back home until 10:00 pm Monday night. So I had to bring lunch, snack, dinner, breakfast, and lunch w/ me. Then I just bought Subway for my last dinner. That's actually easy though, since I always have some Tuna/veggie/rice combos prepped in the fridge. Grab one or two of those, a couple bananas, some honey nut cheerios and a snack and I'm good to go for the whole day. But I always have food prepped for lunch. Tomorrow I'm making a batch of chicken, whole wheat noodles, sauce and melted low-fat cheese ... then of course I portion up the three or four extra servings I don't eat. I'm lucky in that I'm a pretty good cook and I don't mind eating a half dozen staples repeatedly.

The HARD part is going over to my sisters a couple nights a week, but now we've gotten in the habit of just eating subway or making a healthy dinner, but changing our habits from junk food and pizza was hard to do.

I turned on my wipers this morning and the dang rubber part ripped off! Couldn't see anything, drove 30 mph through the snowstorm and nearly died. Good start to the day. :)

Ate a bit too much today. All I wanted to do was skip working out and go eat a half dozen donuts and a friggin Big Mac ... but I didn't. And, as usual, once I actually got my ass to the gym I had a great time. Ran 4 miles in like 45:45, and kicked major ass the last mile, finishing strong and running at 8.5 mph the last quarter mile til I almost died gasping. Fantastic. Upping my training to 21 miles this week (4, 4, 4, 6, 3).

Tue Food Log
Breakfast - 2 big bowls honey nut cheerios (610)
Snack - Chewy cookie thingy (140), cheese (120)
Lunch - tuna, veggies, rice, salsa (370), cheese curds (70)
Snack - Bagel w/ little peanut butter (420)
Dinner - Sandwich (380), half cheeseburger (240)
Snack - 2 cups chocolate milk (340), FiberOne bar (140)

2,790 calories

Just ran another 4 miles on the treadmill in under 46 mins. That's too fast for me ... gotta learn to take it easy on my EASY days! So nice to have the workout all done for the day so I can just go over to my sisters after work and watch the fools on American Idol.

Food for Wed
Breakfast - 3 eggs on 2 pcs wheat toast (400), 1 cup chocolate milk (170)
Snack - banana (100)
Lunch - Veggies, Tuna, Rice (370)
Snack - banana (100)
Dinner - 2 servings chicken pasta (800)

Total: 1940 calories ... should be able to stick to that plan. Hoping for no cravings today :)

I wish these running magazines would stop telling me how great chocolate milk is for a recovery drink. That stuffs like crack already. Don't tell me I SHOULD drink it!

"I'm not running to lose weight, I'm losing weight to run."

I came across that quote today. Of course I want to lose weight, but now I just keep thinking ... man, I'm going to be sooo fast when I'm 100 lbs lighter. Passed on the junk food at the store and just ate a rasberry chocolate yogurt (100 cal) ... putting me at 2040.

I have to say, this is pretty impressive. Well done.

Thanks, my big test is this upcoming 10K. I'm hoping to run it in 1 hr 11 minutes to prove I can keep up w/ the 5 hr pace group for the marathon in May.
