50 biggest dieting mistakes

Okay this one gets me:

24. Thinking they are unattractive.

I don't necessarily think i'm unattractive, I actually think I'm cute! But for some reason hearing others give me compliments helps my dieting/exercise out come more so then me telling myself...Does that make sense?

Yeah, I'm guilty of a couple of them.

Specially the obsession over how many calories I'm consuming a day...

5. Not drinking enough water. Oh so true!!

6. Drinking sugar-laden drinks, such as lemonade, sodas, gourmet coffees, fruity blends, etc. My biggest bad habit! Stopped cold turkey when I got on this kick!

7. Eating more bread, pasta and potatoes than proteins, lean meats, fruits and vegetables. Yeah, there's a reason why my bf calls me a bread-atarian!

8. Consuming processed foods more often than fresh foods. It's ridiculous how many more calories it takes to feel full on this junk!

13. Not having a plan. The downfall of most goals, not just weightloss, huh?

15. Finishing every last bite even after they are full. Something I didn't use to do, but always felt guilty about wasting food at restaurants!!!

24. Thinking they are unattractive. Wow. Yeah. Totally.

31. Thinking of exercise as a must do or chore. Retraining yourself to think of it as FUN is sooooooo important!

40. Tasting and nibbling on the food while cooking. Oh, so guilty! Especially when baking COOKIES!!

Most of these are soooooo true.

But I agree with some of the posts about the calorie counting. Knowing all the intimate details of everything that goes in my mouth is the only way I've been able to understand what I'm doing, and tweak. For some people, this would be way too much information, and it would sabotage the healthy eating efforts - they need to think of it more generally (and perhaps, less obsessive-compulsively!). I guess it comes down to each person.:eek:
 
43. Buying unhealthy snack items for the kids but eating it themselves.

Why does this have to be "BUT"? I would rather say "AND". You're a bad person if you buy unhealthy stuff for the kids that you wouldn't eat yourself. Why do you think childhood obesity is skyrocketing? Teach your kids by example how to eat correctly in the first place and they won't end up like you did.
 
Well, yeah, that was a harsh way to put that, sorry, but, is anybody really going to argue against me? I'm sorry, but it really irks me to see people feeding their kids so much bad junk food, then try to say that their kid's problems are hereditary, all due to bad genes. Why would you be here, knowing good and well that you're struggling with weight, then think it's perfectly fine to buy the kids unhealthy snacks, even if it IS just for them? The way that they word this item makes it sound like it's perfectly ok to buy unhealthy snacks, as long as it's just for the kids. That's just wrong in my opinion.

I go to great pains to make sure my kids eat healthy food. My daughter, when she goes to Girl Scouts (age 10 group), some of the obese mom's always brings highly unhealthy snacks. That alone kind of irks me, but at least my daughter isn't endulging in that, but what killed me was that when it was my wife's turn to bring snacks, she brought a bunch of fruit plus things to make healthy smoothies in an attempt to drop a hint. The only thing that happened was that a bunch of our blueberries, bananas, strawberries, yogurt, and other things were completely wasted, except for my daughter's. This type of mindset is why this country is going down the tubes in a deep-fried casket.

That is a good point though. Out of all people, those of us who have to work on our weight should be the last ones to buy unhealthy things for our kids. That's just setting them up for the same problems we are faced with. No, children shouldn't have to go through life without ever getting a cookie, don't get me wrong. But, our kids are the fattest generation to ever walk the face of the earth, we can't deny that fact.
 
a lot of the problem with children isn't necessarily what they are eating but the lack of activity.. I'm definitely from an older generation but when I was a kid, we were out of the house at first light and didn't see home again til it got dark... Staying in the house all day was not something we wanted to do - we played and we played hard... rode miles on our bikes and even played flashlight tag at night... home was to sleep and to have dinner and avoid baths..

Kids today are overscheduled and spend entirely too much time playing video games, watching television, or just in the house not being active....

Which is why it is even more important than ever to get them into a habit if eating healthier, that, and to kick their lazy butts outside for a while! :)
 
I see myself in a few of those mistakes, and I'm learning that a positive attitude is one of the most important factors in long term success. As long as you keep trying, don't get defeated just because of a slip up.

1. Going on a diet that is NOT a manner of eating that can't be adhered to for life.

2. Believing they can eat cabbage soup every day.

3. Obsessing over counting calories.

4. Weighing in more than once a week.

5. Not drinking enough water.

6. Drinking sugar-laden drinks, such as lemonade, sodas, gourmet coffees, fruity blends, etc.

7. Eating more bread, pasta and potatoes than proteins, lean meats, fruits and vegetables.

9. Taking the benefits away from vegetables and fruits by overcooking them.

10. Having a negative, defeatist attitude.

11. Blaming others for their shortcomings.

12. Being quick to judge.

13. Not having a plan.

14. Not being aware of the nutritional benefits or harm of what they consume.

15. Finishing every last bite even after they are full.

16. Going back for seconds.

17. Eating at all-you-can-eat buffets and getting their money's worth.

I think that at times I have been guilty of all 50! shame shame....I need to read this list every day......maybe 3 times a day!:(

If you are eating correctly, are vitamins and supplements really neccessary?

I would have to say yes. I mean, you can't go wrong with vitamins. It's not something you can overdose on ya know. And supplements are meant to supplement your diet. It's hard to get all the vitamins and minerals you need no matter how healthy you try to eat.


And as for guilty, I'm definitely guilty of weighing myself more than once a week. I have to go to LAWL. I go twice a week and get weighed. And then I weigh myself every morning. I don't rely on that. It's just something to write down. It actually gives me motivation...
 
Sooo true... I am guilty of several of those things... I obsess over the scale and I know I shouldn't... I am working on changing though.. YAY ME!!
