5 stupid things that healthy people do

You are not a stupid person. Not by any means.

In fact, it's my guess that you're healthier than most.

You probably exercise regularly. You watch what you eat. You keep up-to-date on the latest health concerns. You don't binge on sugar.

And you never - ever - eat fast food. Well, almost never.

But you do have a few unhealthy skeletons in your closet -ones that you probably aren't even aware of.

The following 5 Stupid Things are frequently committed by health conscious people. Once you break these bad habits, you'll find that achieving your weight loss goals just became a whole lot easier.

1. You're Dehydrated
It has been said that 75 percent of the population is chronically dehydrated. Would you disagree? When was the last time that you actually drank 8 glasses of water in a day?
Dehydration occurs when more fluid leaves your body than is taken in. Symptoms include: fatigue, irritability, headaches, nausea, rapid heart rate, and, in extreme cases, even death.
Dehydration also slows your metabolism, which hinders weight loss.
You shouldn't wait until the feeling of thirst or dry mouth hits you, at that point damage has already been done. Instead, constantly rehydrate throughout your day to avoid dehydration.

The best way to do this is to incorporate water into your daily schedule. Have a water bottle at your desk and train yourself to sip on it often, and get into the habit of drinking a full glass of water with each meal and snack.

2. You Eat Out Too Often
Research suggests that most people eat out one out of every 4 meals and snacks. That's an average of once a day.
Restaurant food is designed to do one thing: to taste good. In order to increase eating pleasure, each item is loaded with fat, salt and sugar. This causes you to eat way more calories than you actually need.
Even when you order ‘healthy' items, you're still taking in more calories and fat grams than you would if you had prepared the item at home. Imagine the last salad you ordered out. Didn't it come with cream dressing, croutons, cheese sprinkles and a piece of butter laden bread on the side?
The main reason people eat out is for convenience, so with a little organization you'll find that preparing your own meals takes less time than you thought it would. On the weekend sit down and plan out your meals for the week. Then go to the grocery store and stock up on everything you'll need for those meals.

Pack your lunch and snacks each night before bed, then grab it on your way out the door in the morning. When you prepare dinner at home, make enough for at least the next day as well. Your efforts will pay off both in terms of weight loss and in money saved.

3. You're Sleep Deprived
In Gallup Poll surveys, 56% of the adult population reported that drowsiness is a problem in the daytime. That's more than half of us that clearly don't get enough sleep.
Healthy adults require 7-8 hours of sleep each night. When you fail to meet this need your body goes into sleep debt, which continues to accumulate indefinitely until you catch up.
A lack of sleep negatively affects your immune system, your nervous system, and interferes with healthy hormone release and cellular repairs.
The best way to combat sleep deprivation is to set a scheduled bedtime. Your body will benefit from a consistent sleeping and waking routine, and you're sure to get all the rest you need.

If you have trouble falling asleep once you're in bed, then try these two tips. First, make sure that you don't drink any caffeinated beverages after lunchtime. Second, don't eat for three hours before you go to bed. This helps eliminate sleeplessness due to indigestion, and will also turbo-charge your weight loss.

4. You're Stressed Out
I don't have to tell you that we are living in a fast-paced world and that most of us have stress levels that are through the roof. But what you might not realize is that your stress levels are making you fat.
Stress creates an increase in the hormone cortisol, and chronic stress creates a chronic increase in cortisol. This is a problem because is slows your metabolism, leads to cravings and is linked to greater levels of abdominal fat storage.
The vicious cycle of stress and weight gain goes around and around. Stress causes you to eat emotionally, and your raised cortisol levels cause that food to be stored as fat.
One of the most effective ways to instantly eliminate stress is to sit down and write out a list of all the things that are bothering you. This should include things that you need to get done, issues that weigh on your mind and anything you believe contributes to your stress level.

Once it's all down on paper, organize it like a to-do list and start resolving each item. Doing so will get the stress off of your mind and will put your body into the motion of resolving each issue.

5. You're on Exercise Autopilot
You do the same thing each and every time you exercise. Same machines, same pace, same duration. While your routine sure feels comfortable, your results have long since halted.
A plateau occurs when your body adapts to your routine and weight loss stops. It is incredibly frustrating, and totally avoidable.
You don't have to increase the amount of time that you spend exercising in order to see quicker, faster results. It's all about challenging your body.
There are two simple ways to instantly increase the effectiveness of your exercise routine. First, increase your pace. Secondly, increase your intensity. Constantly vary your speed and intensity in order to keep your muscles guessing and adapting.

Another way to break through the exercise plateau is to do something totally new. If you regularly use weight machines then start using free weights. If you normally jog on the treadmill then start using the bike.

I think the #1 stupidest thing that healthy people do is read crap like this and then take it as a fact.

Don't be too sure about that. After all, I am responding to this post.

1. You're Dehydrated
It has been said that 75 percent of the population is chronically dehydrated.
Who says that? Names please.

2. You Eat Out Too Often
Research suggests that most people eat out one out of every 4 meals and snacks.
What research? Names please.

3. You're Sleep Deprived
In Gallup Poll surveys, 56% of the adult population reported that drowsiness is a problem in the daytime. That's more than half of us that clearly don't get enough sleep.
Show me the research that says sleeping more will eliminate daytime drowsiness. With names of course.

4. You're Stressed Out
Nope, not me.

5. You're on Exercise Autopilot
Nope, not me.

thanks for this post! though I know all of this already, it's nice to see the basics reiterated, if only to remind me of the simplicity of it all.

and yikes...as a new member, I had no idea how challenging/combative some people on this forum are. I'll try to remember to included a works cited if ever I have the desire to post statistics. jeez.

Hells, what you didn't see was the ad link he provided ( you can tell cause a Mod edited it). They do this alot. They post some common info or article and post a link thinking that the article makes them look legit. You want the easy way to tell? Look at the post count. Usually, 1 post just means pop in, post an ad, run.

We hold people like this in scorn cause no matter how nice they seem, the link is usually to crap products or services that don't work and just add to their own weight in your money.

ahhhh! no wonder then. let me get off my high horse right quick. I just don't like to see anyone picked on...but I hate links to bunk sites even more!

That and some of the info is bunk but that is another story.

Anytime you see someone linking crap in a post, be sure to report it. It helps keep the board clean of things that new members might click thinking it's real. I know the board has ads for the same stuff but that can't really be avoided, but the mods do fight to keep stuff like that off the board. We throw scorn at things like this..this one just a little more so.

Two out of five for this. I am sleep deprived and I am always stressed out. However, a lot of the time it's hard not to be with bills and such. I probably drink more than the eight glasses of water though. I always have a huge bottle of water wherever I go and I drink it all. My room mates tell me I drink too much because I go to the bathroom frequently.

Does this mean I can't offer free advice or my free ebook, just because I also have a website? What if my product isn't crap and a thousand times better than the ads for the products on this very site? The fact that they paid to be on here?

I'm not here to get rich quick off anyone. I'm a personal trainer, became one because I enjoy helping people get fit and healthy, and if any product I ever create is crap I'll either make it a lot better or get rid of it.

PS my post count on here is only 1 or 2 right now, but i've posted quite a few times on the training forum so I'm not running anywhere. Any questions and I'll answer them, for free, on here for everyone to see.

You are welcome to offer free advice, but you may not link your site or your products. Please read the forum rules an the rules on links and spam.

If you spam the board, you will be banned. If you have a complaint about the policies, please address them to the board admin via PM. Threads and posts that are specifically made to complain about the rules will result in your being banned.

Please respect the rules of the board, whether you agree with them or not.

Quote Kara from the Rules about Links:

Just an update - after a recent spate of confusion about posting links, we, the Mods, clarified some of the rules with Sean (the board Admin/Owner).

Here is the scoop on the rules about links:

Links to known diet resource sites (fitday, thedailyplate, sparkpeople, and so forth); known healthcare and/or news sites (webmd, pubmed, cnn health, etc.); and legitimate fitness resources (lyle mcdonald, tom venuto, and the like) are permitted IN CONTEXT of an ongoing discussion.

The following links are NOT PERMITTED in posts or signatures:

Links to commercial sites, including those selling diet plans, nutrients, vitamins, cleanses, shoes, personal training, or any other for profit product or services.
[Exception: If you are posting in answer to someone who is looking for a resource for an item - for example, someone asks "what is your favorite protein powder" or "what kind of food scale do you use" or something along those lines. Legitimate discussions about particular diets may also have some links posted - for example, discussions about the Cohen's plan, or links to resources for those on Atkins, South Beach, WW, etc.]

Links to non-profit sites for any reason, including asking for sponsorship, promoting events, or bringing attention to national campaigns.
[Exception: You may post about events in which YOU personally are participating in your diary only; for example, if you're running in a 5k for breast cancer or something of that nature, you may post a link ONE time only.]

Links to Google searches on a particular topic. Google searches can be manipulated and used to drive traffic to particular sites. If you want to post a link to articles to support your information, please post links directly to those articles (and please make sure they meet the criteria for legitimate sites - not commercial spam sites).

Links to personal blogs or websites, whether they are commercial in nature or not. This is not a place for you to promote your own sites or blogs to gain an audience.
[Exception: You may list your website URL in the appropriate field in your profile, but you may not refer to it in your posts (i.e. -"see the link in my profile for more information").]

Email addresses of any kind. There is a PM and emailing feature built into the forum software and you can exchange email addresses privately with anyone who PMs you if you so choose.

Additionally, new members may not post links until they have made 10 other legitimate posts on the board. (This directive is straight from the Owner/Admin.) if you are a new member and have 10 posts or fewer, the moderators will remove links from your posts. If you post 10 garbage posts or one liners just to get to the point to be able to post a link, your posts will be removed and you will be banned.

Note that any link that violates these rules OR any link that the moderators feel is inappropriate will be removed at the discretion of the moderators.

If you feel that a link has been removed in error, or if you have questions as to why a link was removed, please PM a moderator and ask. If you start a thread to complain about the moderators or about the rules of the board, your membership will be suspended.

Thank you for respecting the rules of the board as you participate here.

Okay let's clear the air on some things

I'm kind of new to the forum thing. This information is basic advice and I edited it because I didn't have the research to back up percentages that were initially put up on the article. If I say most Americans don't eat enough vegetables are you going to ask for references on that? I would assume that one could read the article and think, "okay this applies to me, maybe I'll do some research on it myself or reply with a question on how I can improve my personal health habits." The information is still useful to people that have no clue what they're doing.

In terms of my posts on this, I figured my posts carry over from training.fitness.com (where I do most of my posting). If you doubt whether or not I'm genuinely trying to help people please check my posting history there.

I guess there are a lot of spammers that come and go so I'm not gonna take any replies personally. So if there is anyone that has a problem with any further postings, feel free to keep an eye on me.

Fair enough.

Ok, let me say it another way.

Stop trying to use this forum as a test case for your ebook.

You want to give some advice? Post it and we will discuss and debate it.

I'm not using this forum as a test case for any ebook, the ebook is free to anyone that wants it. I have been posting on the 3 linked sites here for months and from the questions I answered I made a free ebook for anyone to read because I enjoy writing and I enjoy helping people get fit and healthy. I said people could PM me in case they had a question they didn't want the whole world to know about.

It seems perfectly alright for anyone to link to their "get thin and ripped in 5 minutes with these pills, even though they don't work" sites, as long as they pay you first, but as soon as I offer a FREE ebook, I instantly get threatened with being banned.

I wasn't arguing with the mods or anyone else about the rules of this forum before, but as I am now constantly being threatened with being banned just for trying to help FOR FREE AND IN MY OWN FREE TIME...now I have a problem.

Epersonaltrainr tried this and look what happened. He got accused of being a spammer even though like me, he has posted on the training site for a while.

You'll probably delete this post and ban me now. Go ahead. I won't be posting on here anymore and Epersonaltrainr, given the thanks you got for your post, if I were you I'd go elsewhere to.
