320 and on 900 calories a day. Still gaining! HELP!

Being diabetic and having your cholesterol be in check have nothing to do with it. Odd, that your doctor would say this...

Around 3,000calories is about where I would assume it to be.

Ahh, you don't need to download it. Simply click sign up. Enter a name and your birth date and you will have a free online account. The download is for people who wish to buy the software. Which is 20 bucks I believe and it has some more whistles and bells than the free version.

Thanks.

The doctor said that because I told him I thought I had metabolic syndrome but he says that having high cholesterol and diabetes is part of the diagnosis and since I have good cholesterol and my blood sugar is normal I do not have metabolic syndrome. He says that metabolic syndrome cannot slow they metabolism enough to make me as heavy as I am and so resistant to weight loss.

Wow. I know Steve fairly well, and I can assure you that he is not being mean. He constantly helps people on this forum, and outside the forum. He often works with people who are 400+lbs, and is nothing but genuinely concerned for them. I think you are hyper-sensitive, personally. Steve's problem is that people continually come into this forum asking for advice, and then, when he is nice enough to give it (and believe me, this man knows what he's talking about!!), people who know far less than he does tell him he's wrong and refuse to believe him. It gets tiresome after awhile--hence the response that you found to be mean.

No one is making fun of you-I mean, most of us here are overweight or have been, so we know how it feels to be the butt of a fat joke.

Now, getting to your problem at hand, here's my 2 cents worth. You can do what you want with it, call me a big meanie, or whatever. If I didn't care about you, I wouldn't even bother to post this. So keep that in mind.

If you are eating 3 250cal lean cuisines a day plus a couple of shakes, you're eating over 900 calories a day unless you're shakes total less than 150calories. I don't believe Slimfast makes a shake less than 170calories, and if you're having 2 a day, that's about 1100 calories. Still, you should be losing at 1100 calories. Someone else mentioned the sodium and other preservatives involved in the food you're eating. I calculated, and with 3 lean cuisines and 2 slimfast shakes, you would be consuming at least 2,320mg of sodium. That is A LOT, and could definitely cause you to gain--water retention. You would be much better off eating fresh fruits and veggies with lean meat and whole grain bread and pasta than frozen meals and canned shakes.

How long have you been eating this way? B/c I think it is entirely possible that your metabolism has adjusted to the low cal diet, causing your problem. I agree with Blancita about slowly increasing your intake (with good fresh food) until you hit what should be your maintainance level. If you are 300+lbs, that should be around 3000 calories per day. I know this sounds like utter lunacy--however, this is the only way to increase your metabolic rate. Once you can eat 3000 calories a day and maintain your weight, then you should lower your calories to about 2200 give or take a couple hundred. You should then start losing weight--unless there is some other medical condition that is undiagnosed.

Hope this helps!

As to your comment that fat people don't eat too much, I have to disagree. The reason I ballooned up 100lbs is b/c I ate a lot and didn't exercise. Every fat person I've ever met has overeaten at some point--I watch my 400lb parents devour massive bowls of ice cream, a huge stack of cookies, and candy in one sitting. Sure, there may come a point where they don't overeat anymore, but still are fat, but like you said that is due to metabolic slow down. You cannot become overweight in the first place without overeating. It's a simple energy in/energy out equation.

short on time so got to make this quick.

The medabolic syndrome your docter is talking about and the one I was refeering to are not the same. The one he is talking about has little to do with metoblic rate, contray to the name.

I have tea, black coffee, Crystal Light, water and diet soda.

the carbonation from diet soda can make you gain just as much weight a regular soda ... irregardless cutting the sugar out. So I would be done with the soda and move onto water and tea ..and take your tea with sweet n low or splenda...

good luck
best wishes

Are you sure about diet soda being as fattening as regular soda? I drink about 2 2litre bottles a week. I drink Diet Dr Pepper. Are there hidden calories in diet soda?

I hear that Nutra Sweet causes weight gain but my doctor says it doesn't. Would soda with splenda be better?

I am gaining about half a pound a day on 900 if I were to go on 3000 I would gain almost 2 pounds a day.

I thought you just said you have gained 11 pounds in two months?

BTW, 3,000calories a day for a normal person wouldn't cause 2pounds a day in weight gain from fat. physically impossible... Just letting you know.

Listen, bottom line, If you are gaining on 900calories a day. After all thats been said so far. You are a medical mystery. I'm not joking, or anything else. I'm dead serious.

Go to your doc, a new one, get the tests done on everything.
Take him a document consisting of everything have eaten and drinks for the week and its calorie totals. Then take him the amount of weight you gained in that week. Explain to him everything you have said here. Post back what he says...

I've explained the basics behind thermodynamics and alot of other things already. Its too bad you took what steve said the wrong way. As, he is one of the smartest men in the industry. Likely, could have shed more light on your situation.

I tried down loading their software but I guess I am too fat and too dumb to do that. Maybe crumbs from all the Ho Hos I eat got into my computer.

I did go to a calorie calculator and it says my RMR is supposed to be 3097 so that just proves my point that my metabolism is screwed up for dieting and Metabolic Syndrome (something my doctor says I don't have because I am not diabetic and my cholesterol is ok.

Thank you for not judging me.

You are being obnoxious and defensive. Trevor's only trying to be helpfull. Guess I'll be next. Seems like you're more focused on being defensive than trying to figure out how to change things.

We seem to be saying the same here. You're metabolism is royally screwed up and its not sustainable to live out your life gaining weight on 900 calories. I too have never thought such a thing was possible, but that's really beside the point anyway. Either way you need to figure out how to raise your metabolism.

Do you exercise?

You can just sign up at their website and log your food in online, no downloading anything needed. You said it not us.

Hey ..
I heard from my mother, who heard from a good source, that splenda and other sweetners... when you drink much of them ...they can convert to the body acknowleding them as sugar and are converted ..
I don't drink Diet Soda, because I am pre diabetic and do notice the difference ..plus I do notice the pounds ...

I was 315 and started out in March and have lost 25 pounds ..whilst taking in around 3000- 3500 calories. I have totally turned my life around ... I now weigh 290... just have to change the ticker ..
But I know you can do it to hun...
The Lean cuisines. I tried them ... they aren't that great for a diet ..none of the frozen stuff really is.. unless its vegetables ...

You might want to make meals and don't take potato in ...
If you really want to do it ..
you might want to like do a chicken breast with some marinade one it ..kind of like what Blancita wrote with some veggies ..or a whole lotta veggies ...

I used to do that ...now I eat four tble off white potato ..or a whole sweet potato ... all you have to do is click into the free part of fitday.com ...they even have right down to pepperidge farm cookies ...its incredible how freeing it is ..and it has a caculator to calculate your calories burned ... I usually do general walking ... which is about six hundred calories done in an hour ...
I also one in a while get myself marching fast for an hour ..which is about 400 or so calories burned ..

what they say about the calories being too little slowing down the metabolism is true ...but doesnt mean it won't stop ... I was anorexic .. I talk freely because I started this whole diet and anorexic bit since I was 16 ... it was crazy ..

anyway ... you might want to increase your exercise slowly ..it will hurt ..it hurt so bad when
I hit the pavement ..man did I hurt ...but it doesnt hurt as bad anymore ... and I can hike .. once again ..small hikes ..but I can ...

so you can do it! :)
But you probably need to take in some more calories slowly and increase the exercise and before you know it that metabolism will be going ... exercise especially revs it up ...and larger people usually lose faster ...

Than there is starvation mode ... which your body will take any fat it can get it hands on and store it ..if it is not getting enough

so you might want to increase your caloric intake slowly and increase your exercise five minutes to ten minutes at a time ...

best wishes hun

Hi

I agree with Natalie Jo.

I did not see a note of your height - but I am only 5 foot 3 inches tall - so you may well be slimmer than I was earlier this year.

Many people here have been there.

When I started out in February my weight was not a great deal less than yours is now. My exercise level was nil. I only left the house once a week to go to the supermarket in the car.

The best thing that I ever did was get a pedometer and get out and walk. My exercise level has built up - a bit at a time and I now have the stepcount of an athlete. If I can do it so can you. But it takes time and effort.

As far as the food goes I would follow the advice that others have given. Ditch the convenience / "diet" packages and cook proper food from start to finish. Boil or grill things and try to eat a balanced diet. If there is a low-fat version use it. As far as portion control goes - it would be a good idea to weigh things and count the calories in some way.

As for diet sodas - I have been drinking diet cola for many years. They never helped me lose weight, and I often gained while drinking them. I now understand that they contain chemicals / salts that can cause a reaction within me. I am currently in the process of weaning myself off them. Many people that you will meet on these forums are struggling with this. There may be very little difference regarding published calories between these drinks and water - but you are a lot better off having water.

I think that it is a good idea for you to have the medical tests redone.

I do have to say that since I increased my exercise and got very careful with my diet I have certainly lost weight. The only conclusion that I can draw from this is that I was a fat girl because I ate more than my exercise caused me to burn.

Good luck.
Best wishes
Margaret

Hmmm,

I was wondering about that. Seemed to be selectively offended amidst a sea of similar advice.

Balldez... I'm still waiting on that date. I'll be your Oprah and you can be my Stedman... a silent boy who secretly likes the manpole. ;)
