22yo: Possibility to get fit

Dear all,

I am a 22yo student from Greece. I am 185cm tall and my weight is 78 kg. I was never gymned before due to an accident. Now, my doctors state that I can do whatever I want without any limit.

My dream is to be fit and very nice in terms of beauty and health. Unfortunately, I have a bad beliefl; that it is too late to become fit. What is your suggestion about that?

Also, there is a problem regarding advising in Greece. Everyone believes that he/she is the master of knowledge regarding training and I receive controversial suggestions.

Could anyone give me some nice tips before starting related to nuitrition and steps of getting fit? For example, a potential trainer told me that it would be very nice to increase the volume of muscles, however another one suggested to "show" them off. What should I do?

Do you believe it is late?

Thank you VERY VERY much...

we could spend ages writing out programs for you but ur 22 and u got the rest of ur life to find what u enjoy and what works for you. Try everything. If ppl are contradicting eachother, try both suggestions and see what works for you.

Whatever you do, work hard, but stop if it hurts. try and read as much on this forum as posable to give you an idea.

also write down everything you plan to do at the start of the week, and tick it off as you do it. this will help motivate you so you dont skip training.

Its never too late to get fit bro. First of all, you need to assess yourself and decide what YOU want to do. You have to realize that most experts on fitness (not here though, the people here are very open minded on training techniques) feel that their way is the right way, and there is no other way.

You need to decide what your main goal is :

Do you want to be stronger?
Do you want bigger muscles?
Do you want to be able to run long distances?

Once we know what you consider your goal to be "fit" is, then we can point you in the right direction.

One thing to keep in mind. Your chance of success will be affected directly by your desire. Don't do this for anyone but yourself, your almost guaranteed to fail. If you want it bad enough, it will happen, we can help :).

Welcome to the forum.

omg that is possibly the best sying i have ever heard, ill come back and post again and see if i can help with a program, if it's physical appearance i wont be much use though

My quote was actually from "The Wealthy Barber" by David Chilton. It was originally from a self-help financial book, but can be used for many things in life. If you ever think you should do something, and are worried that starting now would be too late, think about that saying.

Want to work out? Want to quit smoking? Hey, if you started 20 years ago, you'd be much better off. If you start today, how well off would you be in 20 years?

Here's something else: "If I don't do anything, nothing is going to change."

Thank you very much for your responses. I was inspired to start immediately. Those wordings have never been told by a trainer in order to make me start. Thank you very vey much!

By the way, do you think that 4days/week is a good start, aprox. 1,5 hours per session? Thanx again! :D :D :D

The key is - what is enough for you?

When I train, I tend to go 'whole hog' and try to workout every single day... I get up at (ugh) 4:30 a.m., hit the gym by 5:00 a.m., and do either upper body or lower body on a single day. For example, I'll do Upper Body on Monday, Wednesday and Friday and Lower Body on Tuesday and Thursday. The next week, I'll switch it up. I take Saturday and Sunday as my 'rest days', to get ready for the next week.

Others find that three days are enough, and do Monday, Wednesday and Friday whole body.

It all depends on you. DO NOT overtrain yourself, or train so frequently that you say "damn, all I'm doing is working out". (Unless you enjoy that, which I must say I do.) If I could spend every day at the gym, instead of working, that would be a pleasure!

Moderation may be the key. What you need to do is ENJOY your workout. If it's 'work', you won't be doing it for long.
