Hi, my name is Jeff and i'm from Quebec,Canada (yes the french speaking part, hence the numerous errors in spelling). I kind of found this forum looking for some advice on how to loose some weight and i though that i should ask for some advice. I will try to describe my situation as precisely as possible

I'm a 21 year old, 5 foot 11 man and my weight is currently moving between 255 and 264 lbs. I have big bones and large shoulder so my weight doesnt show that much. I appear to be more chubby than fat which make people think i weight less than i do. But my apparence is not what motivate me to loose weight.

I just recently though of asking a bit about my family health problems and it kinda scared me. On my mother side, i have 3 uncles who died of cancer, 2 relatives with ashma, 1 with diabetes , my grand father had a stroke in the 80'S and recently had another attack, my uncle suffer from some kind of arthritis inside his bone (dont know the medical term). On my father side, my grand father died from a hearth attack, he had diabetes and my grand mother ahd hypertension and also died from a stroke. Both my parent are taking cholesterol meds.

Right now i dont have any medical problems and i'm not taking any meds, but i know that if i dont do something while i'm young i will have huge problems later. I'm already experiencing some troubles if i dont rest enought between exercises (black spots, ear buzzing, etc) and i want to put an end to that

I am a college student but my classes only restart in april. So i want to use to the maximum the time between now and then. At home, i currently have what i think the call an home gym. It's a weider pro 9635 like the one at this link:
. I also have a bench with about 300 lbs of weight and a stationnary bike. During the summer i can use the pool, which is currently frozen solid.I started around november to do push-ups everyday (about 5-6 series of 20) and since last week i am doing about the same number of sit-ups but i kind of decreased the number of series of push-ups.

As for the diet aspect, i'm reducing the amount of soda I drink and i try to avoid junk food as much as possible. I drink beer every week my my friends but i rarely drink alone (exept sometime when hockey is on tv). I dont smoke and i am not really into drugs.I might smoke weed about 3-4 times a year and only outside during the summer with some friends. I'm not a big vegetable eater (i pretty much only eat salad, carrot, brocoli and, strangely, brussel sprout) I believe the best way to fulfill my daily quota would be to drink some vegetable juice like V8 or such.

I believe the best way for my to really get into it would be to have a really strict diet and exercise program. I'm willing to try anything (exept maybe stop drinking beer)

So if any of you guys have any suggestions, it would be really appreciated.

Thank you very much for your time

Hey,

Welcome here. Well, between now and April makes about 8 weeks. I think setting realistic goals will definitely help you. By realistic goals I mean, set about 1-2 pounds each week. Its do-able.

Try to stay away from carbs, as they are the ones that are really the main drive to weight gain. Try incorporating more protein and greens. What vegetables do is that they make us feeling full when really have no calories. A lot of people wonder why, well the reason is that body can not break down all of the ingredients of vegetables and hence they don't harm the body.

Stay away from Junk food in every means possible. Junk food is really junk hence the name... hehe. I believe that getting started with a diet is the hard part once a few days are done, you won't feel it.

Eat more fruits and drink atleast 10 glasses of water a day. If after eating you feel like you are still hungry, chew on some sugar-free gum. It helps. Always helps me atleast and the trick to chewing gum is that mind signals the tummy as if something is being swallowed so it continues to break down the food in the tummy. This will help the metabolism a little as well.

If your anything like me, well you will feel addicted to food. I do. But these days I have gotten a little more serious about what my goals are. To not get disappointed, try measuring yourself on one day of the week and continue to do so through out the 8 weeks.

Your already there in terms of work out. Try and incorporate a cardio workout in your routine. But make its a routine. Try to go past 30 mins as after the first 30 mins of cardio, much of the fat burning and muscle tone up begins. So do not stop at 30 mins.

I hope you find some of the tricks I use helpful. Keep us updated on how it goes. A success story is nothing but inspiration for others :)

Jeff,

You sound a lot like me. 22 Yr old student 5' 11" 280 lbs. Here's my advice. Get youself a weight loss diary started on this site. Weigh youself, take some before pictures and post them in the before after section(if you feel comfortable with that, otherwise just keep them), come up with a basic plan and stay with it, and try to keep up your diary, It will definately help you stay honest and on track.

Also, Your english is pretty good.
