120 pounds lost... should I lose more?

I agree with everyone else: if you want to keep losing, go for it, but you look spectacular!

And there's no reason you have to either be only your current weight OR 130. You can stop at any point in there when you're satisfied!

Hi,

I've lost 120 lbs now (111 lbs between the pictures) and my friends and family are encouraging me to stop. They are convience that I am getting to skinny, which according to my bmi I am not. I'm 5'6 and 1/2 (169 cm) tall and currently weigh 176 pounds. My goal weight is 130 pounds.

What is your opinion? Should I continue on?

Laura

First of all congratz... Well, if your methods is healthy I guess there's no reason to stop, if not you guys should listen to your family...

My Method

Many people are curious how I did this... so here we go.

The plain and simple answer is I ate right and exercised. I know, you were probably hoping to hear about some easy, simple regime.

I counted every single calorie I ate. When I first started I was eating 1800 calories because 2800 calories would maintain my weight. So, just by limiting calories I lost 2 pounds a week. I decreased the amount of calories I aimed for my 11 calories each week. Now, I'm down to eating 1200 calories (which is only cutting 800 calories because I won't go any lower than 1200). One thing that REALLY helps me keep a low calorie diet is hungry girl (hungry-girl.com). This website and cookbooks take high calorie and unhealthy food and creates an alternative. Some of my favourite recipes are squash fries, pina colada cupcakes, fettuccini alfredo, and cinnamon buns (YUM!). It's not trick, the creator of hungry girl really makes all of these foods low calorie.

Also, I workout two or three times a week. Usually my workouts consists of 30 minutes on the elliptical machine, 45 minutes lifting weights, 15 minutes crunches and ab work, and then 10 minutes stretching. In the beginning I did a lot of swimming too. Every bit of exercise helps, like taking the stairs and walking instead of driving. Lately, my job has been very active (I work at Old Navy) and I find I'm losing weight faster than before.

I must warn everyone, I lost weight too quickly and as a consequence I have loose skin now. I had A LOT of stretch marks before, meaning my skin was quite stretched out already. Any advice for getting rid of loose skin?

Loose skin is normally an awesome combination of genetics, amount of weight loss, and age. You don't drop a whole person worth of fat and not have loose skin unless you won the genetic lottery.

Wearing a control garment can help the skin regain some of it's shape. Lotion can help as well. Time is the biggest thing but even then with out surgical intervention most of the time it will not all go away when we are talking the amount you have lost.

Talk with a doctor and ask them what they think. I know I have a year to maintain and then I can see how much excess skin I have left (estimate is 15-25lbs). From my heaviest to now I have lost over 170lbs nothing but getting it hacked off will remove the amounts I have. It literally drips down to my knees from my thighs and I have a flap that just hangs from my lower stomach and do not get me started on my under arms :p

Just remember though loose skin we can hide those rolls of fat we couldn't!

you look really beautiful! I was at the same weight at the same time as you! Though I am 5'11, and you've lost more than me~ /jealous! great job! definitely keep working towards your goal if that's what makes you happy. the most important thing is for you to be happy with yourself.

Wowza!!! You look so amazing! You are such an inspiration to me, and I'm sure many many other people, to lose weight and get healthy!! Keep up the awesome work :)

All I gotta say is that you look gorgeous now, but if you still feel like you want to lose more weight then go for it.

You look amazing!! You are such an incredible inspiration. I'm starting out a bit heavier than you, but I hope to make a similar transformation. At your height, I would probably set my goal weight somewhere between 150-165lbs, but if you want to maintain where you are, you look wonderful and healthy!

Congratulations! :hurray:

You look incredible. I believe that as you continue to lose weight you will find yourself very satisfied before you reach 130 pounds, as based on your photo and information, 130 on you would be quite thin. Of course, I agree with the other opinions shared already: seek medical advice, let common sense guide your journey, and realize that other people are strangely affected by other people's weightloss...so just keep that in mind.

What a transformation in such a short period of time. Really impressive and motivating. :)

I am 5' 7" tall, and 140 lbs is too skinny for me. You are shorter than I am, and I am sure 130 is too skinny for you too. I would think maybe 155 would be good. You don't want to get too skinny. :) Good job though! You look amazing!!! I am sure your confidence is soaring.

Hi Laura,

Congrats on your amazing weight loss so far. You are looking so much better now! Honestly. You have a damned pretty face, and when you hit 21 BMI you will have men falling all over you. Seriously.

You should absolutely continue on. 130 lbs is an excellent weight for your height. As a rule, I won't even date women who are over 130 lbs and/or less than 5'6". No, I don't like them to be anorexic (less than 18.5 BMI), but I do find a slim, fit body to be extremely sexy.

I also had friends and family telling me to stop. One of my fat friends has since stopped talking to me since I've lost so much weight. Shame...

Bottom line: do it for YOURSELF, not for your friends or family. Ignore them when they give this type of advice; the family will get used to your new look in time. If any friends leave because of your weight loss, then they weren't really your friends to begin with.

Wow yeah because the goal of weight loss should totally be to date men who only want women of a certain BMI!!! Do you carry a scale and make the ladies step on it before you take them out? Ooo sorry you maybe a size 2 but uhh yeah.. you weigh 139lbs can't date you! Waste away your muscle tissue so you can fit to my numbers!

She should go as you say to where she is happy. Depending on her frame, muscle amount, and bone density it could be hazardous for her to be 130. She could waste muscle tissue to get that low. BMI is a horrible indicator for fitness she needs to see a competent doctor and or fitness expert to determine where she should be FOR HER to be healthy. Not a magical scale number. Body fat % would be a much better place to go.

Depending on her frame, muscle amount, and bone density it could be hazardous for her to be 130.

Yada yada yada. Denial is not just a river in Egypt.

For a female at a height of 5'6", 130 is an great weight. It's not anorexic, but there is also no flab.

Of course, a 5'6" woman could manage to weigh 130 lbs and only have 6% body fat. Would most men find her attractive? No.

When I say that 5'6" 130 lbs looks really good on a woman, I mean on a woman who has about 17% body fat. I don't think it's really healthy for women to go below 17% body fat. Men, however, can go down to 8% and stay there long term with no adverse affects.

It is certainly up to you. My sister is 5'6 and weighs anywhere from 125-135 and it is perfect for her.
It's hard when family is encouraging you to do one thing but you want to do another. I could NEVER lose weight at home and even now (5'4 195lbs) I can't go home without my mom demand I eat/drink more (and I am by no means starving myself or crash dieting)
Another example of this type of family pressure is my sister, who I showed my work badge from 2 yrs ago at 230lbs and then my new one at 195lbs and she said 'You know, I don't ever remember you being that big....' I find that the closer I am to family members the less objectively they view my weight (especially when they aren't getting to see me in my skivvies!)
It can be hard to contend with this kind of positive pressure that you are fine the way you are, but just remember it is always up to you and how you feel in the end!

Depending on her body comp, bone density, and frame 130 may not be healthy for her. She may reach 17% body fat in the 135-145 range. My entire point is the magic scale number is not how you should approach your weight loss. A healthy body fat % is for her age group is 14-21%. A good fitness expert or doctor can calculate that for her and give her an ideal weight range. She is also part of the 100+ club which means from carrying excess weight for so long she most likely has a higher bone density and loose skin. Loose skin adds weight as much as 10-20lbs. So for her to go for 130 again could be unhealthy because that number does not factor in denser bone and loose skin. It just seems you are being irresponsible in pounding out a number on the scale or % as ideal like it would some how be the magical your life will be awesome thing instead of a healthy designed for her ideal that has been done by a professional.
