Weight-Loss 10,000 Challenge!!!

Weight-Loss
Another challenge to revive :)

My stepcounts have been rubbish recently. I'm going to start posting here again.

I don´t have a step counter (and often don´t have my phone with me) but I can do minutes walked instead. 105 today so far.

That's brilliant! Any form of tracking works just as well... The main thing is that we keep moving and don't opt for lazy days

when i was a Boy Scout, our district sponsored a yearly event called the Klondike Derby. what you did at the patrol level (usually 6-8 scouts form a patrol) is build a sled (or inherit one), fill it with some supplies to meet scouting type tests along the course, and hopefully if the weather cooperated and there was snow on the ground (though there were years all we had to deal with was mud), each patrol pulled their sled stopping along the course to... build a fire and boil water... send a signal using semaphore flags... perform some first aid... etc.

one of the challenges was to measure the perimeter of a field ... no tape measure allowed, of course.

since i knew this was one of the challenges, i thought of a way to be as accurate as possible. i went to our school football field/ track and, walking as naturally as i could, i paced off 100 yards about 10 times. remarkably i found i was only off by one or two steps every time i paced it off. then i did the math and calculated the length of my average pace. whereas other patrols (i asked) estimated their paces as ~2.5 feet... i knew my stride length to a fraction of a fraction of an inch.

i remember the look on the umpire's face when i reported the distance i walked off... he gave me the maximum 5 nuggets (yellow painted slugs) award and wouldn't say how close i got when i asked, but i have to imagine i was within a few inches.

anyway... want to turn steps into distance with some good accuracy?
find a football field or track and start counting.

distance / # of steps = step length

distance = 100 yds, good ... ¼ mile, better.

Thanks for your input Overlandflyer.

When things get back to normal I'll probably give that a go.... At the minute we are pretty much locked down...
I just get out in the morning about 6:30am and walk in the streets near where I live. I get out then before anyone is about.

I have my mother who is nearly 98 living with us. She needs to be fully shielded from the virus (which has hit England badly) as it is highly likely that the virus would kill her....

In the meantime - I'll just have to go with the stepcount - but am sure in the knowledge that whatever the distance 2000 steps is better than 1000 :)
