Liza

Well actually I think the other tenants in the house can hear me playing piano...so sometimes i do get a bit self-conscious imagining them hearing my pathetic attempts at music--again me getting in my own way--I'm sure they don't pay attention to my playing as they probably have more interesting things going on in their life!

I had a nice encounter yesterday with someone I used to play in a uke group with--we were chatting about the old days and she was saying what a great voice I have. I ignored it the first time she said it, but when she said that a couple more times, I told her that I never even used to join in singing anywhere before I joined that group as I was so self-conscious about being a bad singer. She was shocked and said again--no that I have a really nice voice! It was high praise coming from her as she sings really well and can harmonize and everything. It was really nice to hear!

I had a couple of other nice chats with people. It's nice it being spring again so people are out more, ready to linger and have a chat.
I love hearing people practicing their instruments. I used to live near a music school in Boston and you could walk down the street and hear singers practicing the same phrase over and over, or a pianist getting a hard passage right. I wish more people let people see their projects while they were working on them. Learning is such an interesting and inspiring process. It's great your uke group friend kept complimenting you until the compliment sunk in! It's good to hear you had a nice Easter with nice people to chat with and some chocolate. I hope you had a nibble for me!

What a wonderful & obviously genuine compliment, Liza. Your Easter sounds lovely.

How lovely to get a compliment like that from someone whose skill you respect so much!
It was really nice. She is such a lovely/warm person. The group we were part of together was actually just like that all round. So much good feeling in the room when we got together!

that's so true--I love hearing people practice their instruments as well-no matter the level.

I do love Easter--it's always been my favorite holiday I think!

Got ol' Bikey out yesterday for a nice little ride. Still trying to ease into more hills without overdoing things. I really want to get to the point where the rides I was doing last year are comfy again. It's just that I have to get up 2 steep hills first off in the ride before i hit the flatter sections so I haven't gotten there yet. It would be better if I could have a bit of a warm up before the hills...But I guess I could always walk the bike up the first section of hill and then go from there--yes maybe next time...
But yes did well yesterday with no back pain or stiffness afterwards. Seeing how challenging I do find the hills again I am pretty surprised at where I got to last year with riding.

Ate well for the most part yesterday but did overdo the sugar again. Didn't track calories, but feel like maybe somewhere between maintenance and a surplus. When I got home in the evening I was feeling pretty blue, and I do think that was from over-doing the chocolate. I thought the evening would be a write off but then just as I was getting ready to go to bed early, I moved over to the piano instead and had a nice little session. That always makes me feel better.

That's great you are able to do a lot of what you did last year on your bike and your back is ok with it! I bet it will take a lot less time this year to completely conquer those hills again. So nice to hear you could hop on the piano and have a nice evening!

Knowing you were able to tacle those hills just a couple of months ago would be the best motivation to get back there. Also yat for no pain afterwards!

What a lovely, well-balanced day, Liza. 20 mins of piano before bed sounds soothing.
I did the piano again right before bed last night--it is helpful to know it's on my list of goals so as I'm going to bed I think--well I could just do one song to check that off and then it leads to more :)

Oh no--I am nowhere near what I could do last year. These days what I do is bike off in the other direction where it is flat to begin with and then I add a few hills once I am warmed up a little. And the hills aren't as intense as the ones in the other direction where I was going more last year. The thing with this route that I'm doing nowadays is it's more limited for where I can go without getting into a bunch of traffic.
Last year I would head up the hills first thing and then once you reach the top you have really nice long flat sections of beautiful quiet countryside roads.

Yes it is encouraging knowing I did do that just a few months ago. I guess part of me is also hesitant as I do wonder if that's how I messed up my back...Anyways will be a good goal to build back slowly and be careful of my back as well.

Yesterday was pretty good activity-wise, not so good food-wise. I did a good amount of gardening and got the rest of the sweet peas into the ground that I had started indoors. Food-wise, I don't know what happened--just poor planning I guess. Well that and the anxiety hit in the evening which makes it hard for me to cook. The only veggies I got was some sauerkraut! Will try to do better today. Maybe should track today to help me keep on a healthy track.

You can do it. Variety in exercise is great and between walking, running, biking, physio exercises, and qi gong I'm sure your back will see reason as long as you listen to its signals.

That makes sense about you doing less intense hills to build up. I really like how you are getting piano in because it's on your goal list. I was really surprised how much our list is helping me keep on track. That always surprises me when I forget to eat many veggies. I try to keep some frozen veggies around for such times, but sometimes I find that I've already eaten those up, too.

I think your back was giving you grief before you started biking. Taking it easy for a while is a good idea though. Tracking is important for me I think. I know I am not getting anywhere near enough protein.

What a nice compliment about your lovely singing voice. As I suspected, you don't give yourself half enough credit!

Glad you're enjoying the gardening and piano playing and Bikey is back in action! I love spring.

Thanks for the encouragement. Yes I think variety is a really good idea for joint/pain issues...it also keeps it all more interesting!

Part of my thing with veggies is once my anxiety starts to build the idea of eating real meals becomes very unappealing as my stomach is in knots. So usually my go-to at times like that will just be some cheese and crackers and sauerkraut. But yeah frozen veggies can be so handy--I don't really have a proper freezer so the sauerkraut is the best option for me for instant veg.

Yeah I wasn't sure the progress of my back pain. I know I've had a few problems with it over the years that seemed to ease once I started running..and then returned at some point last year in a form of pain I hadn't had before...anyhow hopefully with all this back care stuff now, I can build into a stronger, more flexible self while keeping up both the cycling and the running...

It's funny sometimes I find the start of spring really difficult for me--all the extra light and stimuli etc, but yeah I'm definitely getting into it now--so nice to have some opportunities to get out on the bike! And soon hopefully that outdoor uke group will start up!

Yesterday was much better food-wise. Went over calorie goals but really stayed focused on protein and veggies. Felt so good to get some proper nutrition in!
Also had a nice walk-run session in the morning--moved up another level and really starting to feel the joy of the run despite there still be plenty of walking intervals. No pain afterwards too so I'm feeling encouraged.I had some stress things I was dealing with the previous days and I felt my body very happy to release it in a run.

No piano yesterday--I spent the evening focused on cleaning. I know I could have also fit in some piano but I didn't feel like it and I don't want it to feel like a painful chore that I have to do.

Protein 105%. Wow! How did you manage that?

🏃‍♀️ ❤️
Yeah the only way I get the protein that high is if I take my protein powder--even then it can be hard to reach 100% if I am in a deficit...
Well done on a great run and all that protein.
Thanks! Feels good to be getting back to running again!

Yesterday was pretty good. Not as good for meals again. Maybe no vegetables again?? What sort of vegetarian am I anyhow??
I did however also have no real sweets...oh wait I did have a protein bar that also had sugar...but nothing else for sweets.
And I did have my protein powder that also adds greens to the mix...so not too bad.

Movement was good. Got about 2 hours walking in (some of that on a beautiful trail I haven't visited in a while) as well as the physio and stuff. And social-wise was good as I met a couple of friends for a coffee...

I was pretty exhausted in the evening though so another night of no piano and not much of anything else either. But I'm ok with that. Got a good night's sleep which was nice.

Do you know if it's really important to get 100% of the recommended protein for the day? I don't do well with that either. It's really nice how much socializing you're getting in lately. And so nice you are revisiting beautiful old trails!

I saw Llama gave an extensive reply about protein in your diary so I won't say too much about it. For me I don't worry too much about hitting 100% but it's good for me to know what I am aiming for and how close I am to it. On top of all the physical benefits, I also imagine it's good for mental health stuff.
Also for me it was interesting to learn how important it is to try and get a good dose of protein after a physical workout. I usually take some protein powder now after a run or bike ride. Another thing I found interesting on cronometer is they break down what amino acids you are getting--this is probably more interesting when you are getting more protein from vegetarian sources as I found for a while I was lacking in one of the amino acids pretty consistently so now I make a special effort to get that one. The protein powder gives a nice balance of the amino acids.
That made me laugh! :D

Your day sounded pretty full-on so I think a night off from the keys was probably needed. Great that you slept well.
Nice! i'm glad I made you laugh :)
Another night of no piano--I really must get back to it again. I don't know why it feels so difficult to get to it as I usually really enjoy it once I begin.
Oh, Liza. That is so funny!
It sounds like a lovely day & it's great to see you socialising more xo
It is nice to be mixing with more of the humans!

Too much sugar yesterday. But I did have some good healthy food as well. Really need to watch that sugar intake though.
It was a fine day all round, nothing too exciting or too stressful.
