I've been having pain in my right hip after I run, and I'm seeking advice/knowledge/whatever you can offer. Details below.
I started running about a year and a half ago, in the beginning of 09's school year. I began with a third of a mile and have just recently accomplished a 5-mile run. I love running and believe it has been beneficial, but lately I've been discouraged because of hip pain. Late summer/early this school year was when I began hurting -- it felt almost like a joint issue (toward the outside and top of the right hip), but there were times when I definitely felt it as muscular pain. It never hurt while I was running; it would only begin hurting immediately after I stopped running and started walking to catch my breath. It would be sore for that day and (not so much) the next, and, while just starting a run, I would feel it hurt a little and then almost loosen up. I wasn't doing any warm-up stretches before or after my runs at this point, so I started doing that around Christmas, and I think it helped. For a short while things were better.
Then the pain returned, only this time in a different spot, though same hip (right) -- lower and toward the inside of the hip, and I have no doubt that it's a muscle. If I don't run more than two miles, it hurts the worst once I stop running and then doesn't bother me too much during the day. When I ran four or five miles, I was quite sore that day -- it hurt a little when I walked but mostly when I lifted and lowered my leg (such as climbing stairs or stepping over something). Also, within the last three weeks or so, I've begun feeling discomfort while I run for the first time. It doesn't prevent me from running and it doesn't hurt, but it's -- there, I can feel it. I don't know how else to explain it.
In the typical week (which is never typical, ha), I run Monday, Wednesday, and Friday and do indoor muscular exercises on Tuesday and Thursday (and sometimes Saturday), so I don't think I'm overdoing it. With the weather getting warmer and now having access to a helpful, encouraging health forum, I want to get back into a routine, but I'm tired of being sore and wish I could enjoy running and the rest of the day. It's not excruciating pain and it hasn't prevented me from performing my usual activities, but it is annoying, partially because it hurts and partially because I don't know what to do or not to do to prevent/alleviate it. I've taken Ibuprofen in times past, but it hasn't done much, and I don't want to depend on Ibuprofen to take away my self-induced pain for the rest of my running days. I do run on roads, but I try to run in the middle as much as possible so as to avoid running on uneven surfaces. I've wondered if I just need better shoes or if my gait is off, but I have no way of telling, and I'd rather not spend the money on a doctor yet.
Thoughts? Suggestions? Observations? I Googled hip pain after jogging the other night and explored several results, but none were exactly what I was looking for, so I decided to try joining a forum. I would greatly appreciate any advice!
