how to overcome an ankle sprain

I sprained my ankle for the first time ever this past summer. Pretty good I supposed after 20 years of soccer. It was a pretty decent sprain and kept me out of soccer and on crutches for awhile. Needless to say, I was pretty bummed and I probably didn't let it heal as I should have before getting back into the game. I was anxious to return to my team for playoffs (we won by the way).

Anyway, as I continue to play I notice that I am not nearly as agile or strong when it comes to jumping and turning as I used to be. I am a goalkeeper and my jump is pretty important.

I was just wondering if anyone had a tips for strengthing exercises. Sports related exercises would be great too.

I read a few posts about it and someone had mentioned doing strengthing exercises on a stability board which makes sense to me. So I was thinking, the Reebok Easy Tone sneakers might also help since they have balance balls in the soles. Anyone have any thoughts on those?

Yes , my gosh. Lets get on this.

First and foremost, do the ABC's with both feet every day. This simple thing can increase range of motion, promote blood circulation, and strengthen your entire ankle component.

Once, healed - prevent these annoying injuries all together if possible by being pro-active in injury prevention...at least if you do get hurt it will be less severe.

There are a few quality products out there:

The jumpstretch guy is a little wacko, but has awesome stuff - Thats probably why I like him.

You could do a google search for injury prevention and sift through the boneheads and gurus to get to the guys with the good stuff.

Shameless plug - My brother and I actually have a plan to reduce injuryies in the neck, shoulder, hip, knee, and ankle - an all-in-one type of thing at injuryproofathletesdotcom

Hope this helps,
