If muscle growth occurs during rest

Do I need to have protein in the body prior to a workout. This may sound stupid but I don't understand. Protein breaks down within hours, so I'm thinking wouldn't it be good to eat carbs prior to a workout, and maybe protein after a workout. Maybe someone knows when the muscles actually start growing? is it maybe during sleep? If thats the case and you did a 1pm workout, couldn't you start stacking up protein after the workout. I'm also curious as to how long muscle growth lasts for. That could perhaps shed light on when and how to eat protein. I'm sure someones going to tell me if I want to build muscle I need to eat protein all the time. But I'm thinking Protein is generally more expensive.

You need to keep the entire body in a positive nitrogen balance as often as possible. Rest is when the body can utilize protein for muscle tissue repair.

And because protein synthesis slows down over the course of a few hours, eating every 3 hours, and consuming protein at all of those meals, keeps you in a positive balance.

Carb timing is important too, but you shouldn't be thinking about 'carb only' or 'protein only' meals, because it doesn't work well and is pretty hard to do.

Easy way to make sure you're getting enough protein is just to get 1 gram per pound of bodyweight. It takes 4+ hours for the breakdown of protein and longer than that when you start mixing protein with fats, carbs, and fiber.

As far as nutrient intake is concerned-protein first, essential fatty acids (omega 3s mainly) second, followed by unsaturated fats and some saturated fats third, and carbs last. Carb intake is most important following workout.

Good post guys..

clears things up a bit.

So if I was to go on a bike ride, say 50km, what would my diet consist of the night before and morning? atm I'm eating heaps of carbs on a Thursday and Friday, consisting of Egg pasta, with protein. I eat yoghurt in the morning to give me some energy.

The otherday I went for a ride, I noticed I had gone from 59kg to 60kg, two days after the ride I was 58.5. Does fat burn that quickly, like in 48 hours? So then before a ride should I just eat a whole heap of fatty foods?
