how much does diet impact muscle gain.

i keep hearing everyone say that diet is such a huge part of everything.

what i'm curious about is this. lets say i go to the gym and do my FBW 3 times a week, do cardio and continuously make steady progression with weights. I eat the amount of protein I need for my body weight but I don't eat "super-perfectly clean" does that mean I won't have good gains? I get that obviously if someone is trying to lose weight then they will have problems dropping the fat but wouldn't the muscle gains still be noticeable?

If you get enough protein, enough carbs to keep your glycogen stores high, etc, you're pretty much good to go as far as muscle building. Eating clean can have an impact on your energy levels (low energy on workouts = less muscle gain), getting the right nutrients that are required for the muscle building process, etc. But the most important part is just getting enough protein, carbs (to keep glycogen stores up, note that with regular strength training, you don't really need a lot to do that) and kcals.

Now when it comes to health dietary composition plays a much larger role IMO.

it's just a little annoying karky, i'm putting in the man hours at the gym but i'm in a tight spot with food.

i'm a student, making **** money, just enough for gym, gas, insurance.

i live at home with my mother who doesn't want to do the whole "grilled chicken, nuts, veggies, fruit diet. and then i see things like diet is 80% of the battle and it's like what the ****!

I'm with karks.. If you're getting the protein and calories with training, you'll put on some muscle. But if your diet is crap otherwise, who knows if you'll see it.

How much to peanuts cost in the US? Over here in the UK you can buy a 200g bag of peanuts in supermarkets for the equivalent of about 50c. That's about 1,200 Kcals and 36g of protein. Lots of good fats too.
Not exactly a well balanced diet on their own but decent food with low levels of sat fat and sugar don't have to be expensive, you just need to look around a bit

I didn't see Kark mention calories, which he obviously knows. But yea, it's a foundational requirement. In my experience, most guys I work with aren't not growing b/c inadequate protein or carbs... it's due to inadequate calories.

Eating enough to support continual growth can be a chore for most.

**** I missed that. You're even more "right" than me too, since you added the kilo.

Don't mind me. I speed read which means I have about 30% comprehenion b/c I'm "special" like that.

:p

Carry on.

I guess that's what I don't get 100% Hoss. So someone is 200 lbs trying to gain muscle. He eat's 200g of protien a day and is eating enough calories.

What would make the rest of his diet ****? if he consumes a lot of bad fats etc?

And if he does eat too much fat or w/e would make his diet "bad" then he doesn't see good results?

Hmm I never even thought of peanuts honestly.

I've noticed the first half of my day I can eat healthy NO PROBLEM. but then at night i'm on the PC watching TV and SNACKING! I dunno why. Water helps though.

Typhon how did you put your diet together? Where did you get your inspiration/ideas?

Just like everyone's saying if you're getting at least 'enough', you'll add weight. If you've got a good training routine you'll add muscle. And if the rest of your diet is, "****" you're probably adding a good amount of fat too (depending on how far over your calories you are). If all you want is muscle, eat your ass off and just watch your BP and fats (LDL/HDL/TG).
