Frusterated and ready to quit!!!

I really hope someone can help me with this, it is so incredibly frusterating! I am 25 years old and am not to terribly overweight. I have the body type that gets bulky fairly quickly. I have always had larger thighs, however since I've started exercising again 3 weeks ago, my thighs and hips have grown! Each of my thighs has increased by 1/2 inch and my hips by an inch. I know it's not muscle yet because they actually grew by that much within the first week. I have been doing The Firm and mixing in some Shape DVDs. About 3 years ago I was running 3 miles on the treadmill 6 times a week and also doing the Shape DVDs and my thighs stayed huge for 6 weeks. The only reason I slimmed down was because I got pregnant and was absolutely sicker than a dog. Even my mom noticed how much thinner I got after I quit exercising.

Does this have something to do with lactic acid or water retention? I do drink at least 60 ounces of water each day.

Any ideas would be great! I'm so frusterated I'm not sure what to do. I want to exercise because it makes me feel great, however I HATE how tight my jeans have gotten! I thought the purpose of exercise was to slim down?

It could be hormone imbalance there and fluid retention. But if I were you, I would seek medical advice at this stage just to make sure what is causing the problem.

inherent battle

My wife fights this same fight. She is 5' 110 lbs up from 5' 100 lbs. She is so pissed about the weight gain, but weight gain is the net result of building muscle. Muscle is denser and therefore weighs more then fat. To be clear she looks way better toating the extra 10 lbs around. Luckily she is fit enough that it just added a little curve to her already pristine figure.

If you are building size and not weight, one could assume your diet is off and you are in fact getting fatter. If you are building weight and size, then your training methods are conducive to growth.

IT sounds to me like you want to burn weight and size. Well that is best handled through RUNNING >>>>>>>.

Lastly, dont scarf down a bunch of "health drinks" and "protein bars", unless you burn more calories then you take in. Else, these high calorie substitutes, will be more a proponent of weight gain then a healthy substitute.

My 2 cents

Look at your eating

Most people think that exercise is the main thing for losing weight. It's not. What your body looks like is 80% what you're putting in. I would suggest keeping a food log for a week (don't count calories yet) and see what you're putting in your mouth. You'd be surprised about how much you're eating.

I suggest looking up the Paleo Diet online for what to eat because that's made the most sense of anything I've ever run across. Basically, if God didn't make it, don't eat it.

Also, be a little nicer to yourself. Realize it took you a while to gain the weight. Note, it'll come off faster than you put it on. Your attitude toward exercise and proper nutrition will also have an effect on your body as well. I can tell through your post that you are really hard on yourself.

If you really believe that you can slim down, then keep working, doing research and most importantly, watch what you eat!

Good luck! You can do it!

This sounds like a huge possibility. I don't eat horribly, but I could definetely do better with my diet. I think my problem is I don't really know how to eat.

I love to run, however it kills my knees. I have started taking Glueclosimin (sp) so I might have to work back into it.

Thanks for the advice, I might have to do some reading on how to eat better, any good websites I can start with?
