I hate to do this, but I feel I have to...

Ok so I really hate to do this as Im very self conscious, but I feel I have to do this for the motivation part of my workout. Id really like to get everyone's view on whether or not I really have the body to get in "lookin' good" shape. Im kind of broad shouldered and kind of muscular which is weird as I have not worked out in YEARS. I will tell a little of my story so everyone can get an idea as to why Im here. I was diagnosed with a heart problem and rare blood disorder all within the last few years. Those to things along with Hypoglycemia and depression really stopped me from not only working out, but just about from living. Id like to change my view of myself, not just to look and feel good, but for ME. I want to look and feel healthy, mentally and physically. I dont want to do this, I NEED to do this. I not only want to lose some weight, but Id like to build my muscle and if I can TRY and "cut".

So now that my short story is out of the way, cover your eyes. lol... Here are before pics of what I look like now. Hopefully I can post some progression pics that will show my hard work. Im going to try and post some new pics within a month to see how Im doing, but for now please let me know your opinions and suggestions. Thank you. -Austin

dude you dont even look bad at all---especially considering you havent worked out for years.
i agree, you are muscular considering you dont work out.
im glad you decided to get healthy.
have you thought of what you are going to do? ie: diet, lift, run? whats the plan d00d?

o...and i like the PJs. :]
you seem like a nice guy. hope you achieve your goals man.

Thanks man, I really appreciate the kind words. I plan to work weights and do cardio (treadmill). After Ive worked on a treadmill for a bit I'll get a bike. I used to ride a BMX bike for hours-on-end daily and I was LEAN and muscular. Would love to ride again. Im still trying to work out a good eating regiment. I really cut back on soda a couple of years ago, but have just about completely done without for a while now. I do have one every few months though as I almost get a craving for the carbonation (carbonated water sometimes cures this craving).

I'll take eating suggestions too!

I forgot to post my stats in my previous post. Im 27, 5'7 and weigh 186.

You don't look bad, so get that out of the way! Once you realize that, this all becomes easy and fun! Easy, ... well... fun!! Make sure your doctor says things are OK to hit the gym, etc.

Just start out with easy workouts with four sets of 8 for your chest, arms, back, and legs. I would train weights four days per week. Upper body one day, lower body one day, a day off in between, and then do it again, then two days off/rest. On the day that you train lower body, do cardio last.... I know that sounds bad and hard... but with weight loss I am an advocate of doing cardio last. This way your legs get much needed rest time.

If you want more training than four days... then do cardio on other days, as you want.

Abs: simple crunches and oblique twists will get you going in the right direction -- whether that is to your left or right!

My dr. says its ok for me to work out so thats one reason why Im getting back into working out.

I really do hope that I can achieve what Im going for. I know it wont be easy, but also know that it will be better for me in every aspect.

I think we're all a bit self-conscious of posting pics on a fitness forum.

You do not look as bad as you think you do. You obviously have a goal in mind and a mental picture of what you want to look like, and since you're not there, you don't like what you see right now.

But like everybody else has said, you don't look bad at all :) Add a little muscle, lose a little fat and you'll be rocking at the beach in no time!

Prolifix, I like what you wrote in your message, way to go! Doing these things for myself is also my motivation - and it's working great so far. Looks you have a good head start on me, too, because you don't look bad at all!

Hi
ill back what everyone else is saying, u really dont look as bad you think you do...not at all!!
Taking into consideration the conditions you mentioned u should be very proud of how you look..sooooo many perfectly healthy people sit on their butt eating drinking and who knows what else! But your out there making something of yourself regardless of your problems.
IM exactly the same, my own worst critic, never happy with something about
myself but i think sometimes maybe i do it so everyone around me says 'no youre totally wrong you look gorgeous!!!' it encourages compliments!! MY BAD!!
Seriously though good on you for your hard work, hope all goes well for you!

Dude, I was in your boat back in March. Similiar body type, etc.. 5'7'' - 5'8'' and 189 lbs. Since you are a getting back, a few advice and it's up to you to take them or not but this worked wonders for me.

First, find a good workout partner who is just as motivated, consistent, and similiar strength and height. Fortunately for me, I got my brother to workout again and we lift weight 3-4x a week. A good workout partner can do wonders in term of motivation and Spotting and doing different technique / workout that you might normally not do; that is a extra machine / lift and it would be 3-4 extra sets.

Secondly, I went and trimmed my BF down first while my body was re-gaining its old strength back. I thought and maybe I did gain muslce while trimming the fat but I was able to drop down to 165-168 lbs before I decided to gain some muscle mass 3-4 months after that ordeal. I would do cardio in the morning and workout weights in the afternoon. Getting on to the gym was the hardest part in the morning but once I am on and working out, I felt awake, alert and good for the rest of the day. My brother did the mass / muscle gain method first and other people says that I look more "fit" / "buff" than he did while we were working out with about the same wieght.

Thirdly, always take Whey right after your workout (its amazing). Not sure when you last really trained but back about 6 years ago when I did it, whey was not popular and the market had only Amino Acid supplements. Whey is awesome. If you really want to push it, eat some cottage cheese before bed or take some casein.

Good luck man, I do suggest to trim first and then put on the muscle mass.

oh, I think you have potential to get pretty buff. I am sure you have a goal set in your head, now go for it!!!!

Thanks again for all of the compliments and advice everyone. I kind of had a late start as I had to go on a business trip for a month. No business trips for a while so I started on my workout. I hope it all goes well.

Tic, I agree with you that I have potential to get pretty buff as Im Italian and everyone in my family (male wise) is broad-shouldered and stocky; muscle).

I wouldnt mind being buff, but Im more looking to be lean and cut with some muscle. People already think I workout when they see me. Do you have a better pic of your avatar? From what I can see, thats they way Im wanting to look.

I will post progress pics soon.

yeah. stay on the positive line and keep up the training and you will reach a nice goal, believe me!
