Living Large

No comment but I bet if you gave those people the chance to be thin they would take it in a flash despite what we see in that clip

I agree that the problem is more complex than just lacking the "willpower" to eat less and exercise more. It's easy for a person who does not have a psychological or emotional disorder to say that. We're talking about behavior patterns that have been ingrained since childhood and most likely have a genetic basis as well. This isn't to say that these people are incapable of losing weight, it just takes a lot more work for them to do it. It takes intense psychological work and unfortunately, our nation as a whole does not provide a very safe or nurturing environment for people to address psychological issues.

I can only imagine having a disorder that I could not handle on my own, not being able to get health insurance because of my weight and therefore not being able to afford psychotherapy to get the help I needed. The fact is, these people do need more than just doctors telling them to lose weight. Just telling them to eat less and exercise more clearly doesn't work, the problem is more complex than that.

I do have to disagree, however, with the policy of shunning weight loss. The fact of the matter is, being obese is unhealthy. We live in a world where people do need to be responsible for their own physical and psychological health. Those who shun treatment are, in my opinion, doing themselves a disservice.

Overall, I think an environment in which there is less shame surrounding obesity would be a good thing. If we could accept the psychological aspects as part of the disorder, then maybe we could have more success at combating the obesity epidemic.

I am reminded of the South Park episode where they addressed the "disease" of alcoholism: the cure is to drink less.

If one of these persons could "pop a pill", it is likely the majority would be at a healthier-looking weight. In stead, it takes an application of hard work, and a work ethic that applies enough of the person to get it done. And, these precious human beings, "may" not be the only ones, that "fail" this test. I am not saying anyone is judging, I certainly am not. However, all our asses stink. It just stinks in different ways from one person to the next.

Best regards,

Chillen

Respect people for who they are. If living large did not come with health risks, I would prefer a lively large person than an insecure, introvert of a skinny person. Not to say any of you are but just speaking in general terms. :violent:

It's about making excuses for not putting the effort forth, not just "lol fat haet"

Lady at 5:40. Her explanation of "the reality" is an excuse. An excuse to prevent her from taking responsibility. And if that's the logic behind this embrace of obesity, then it's pathetic.

That was the most disgusting, revolting video I've seen in a long time.

Anybody who makes excuses for being obese needs a wake-up call. Reality check: YOU'RE FAT. LOSE WEIGHT.

If we lived like cavemen, those people would be eaten because there is no way they could run away from their predators fast enough. They also don't have the strength or physical prowess to be able to defend themselves (i.e., chuck a spear). They are just too fat and out of shape.

So how "normal" is it to be obese? It's not normal. Regardless of what these people think, they just lack self-respect and the will power to lose the weight. It's not like they woke up one day and gained 200 pounds overnight.

If you are fat and someone tells you so you can 1) Accept it and do something about it. OR 2) Give in to what they say, make yourself worse and look stupid in the process.

They chose #2.

Honestly, anyone can make up an excuses for anything. It's easy. I mean, come on, losing weight is hard - making excuses is much much easier.

I have been fat a good portion of my life, sure it ain't easy and you need to want to improve yourself pretty badly...but this is simply giving in, totally and completely. surrendering. They surrendered their morality and sense of self.

That video is saddening...but I refuse to pity them or blanket them with any kind of support.

:confused4:

edit: I get angry when seeing people blame "outside" sources for their state of bad health...Their clearly is a problem with discrimination in the country concerning this but their is always choice. Some people just need a tad more discipline. Now I remove myself from this thread before I say things I can't take back.

Spot-on!

Some people just need a tad more discipline.

Same point again....

It takes an application of hard work, and a work ethic that applies enough of the person to get it done.

It takes that...and that on a consistent basis! A life-style!

Ya know....if you stop to think about it, about 1,000 years ago we only had fruit, vegetables, some random protein and a pretty boring selection of food. If you gave the average person these unexciting food choices, they'd probably only eat when absolutely hungry and it'd probably take a lot of hard work getting "large"

Bringing times current....today we have the advent of pizza, donuts, potato chips, candy bars, flavored sodas...stuff brimming with calories, flavors and utterly delicious. We also don't need to hunt, gather or work very hard for our food either. My point is that it's easier then ever to get large and stay large....and it's not like smoking where we can just quit and avoid it...we need to eat to stay alive...and each day, multiple times, we are confronted with an abundance of delicious food choices. Do any of us not "cut loose" a bit while on vacation, cruises or at special events????

The thing about 'today' is that we need to exercise two things....our bodies AND our discretion in terms of how we want to live. We use discipline, determination and dedication to create the bodies we want to have. Sure, there are naturally some people who are just fit-looking and don't have issues....but for me, I have to fight a huge genetic tendency towards being big....but I'll tell ya, it's easier and easier with each passing day and it's amazing how much less I eat and now feel satisfied. I can still hit a slice of pizza, a mug of beer or an occassional chocolate treat...it's about moderation...but above all, it's about having an awareness of what's going in your mouth and exercising the discretion to moderate your consumption.

I think the biggest problem with these people is that 'where they are' and 'where they want to be' is such a great distance apart that they just don't have it in them to make the effort and stay the course long enough to get there....so they give up and surrrender, they take the easy way. It's still their fault. If one person can do it, another one can too. It can be done and it disgust me that they won't make the choice. Eat less, move more or beware of flying harpoons! ;)
