Comments on this very modest HIT-like workout

I am an old man of 38, who no longer has the time, nor the energy to train "hard and properly".

I have now started on this very modest HIT-like routine.

Mon, Tues, Wed, Thurs, Fri, Sat, Sun

Squat 1-2 sets 10-15 reps
Standing forward leaned row with barbell 1-2 sets 10-15 reps
Push ups on floor 1-2 sets maximum reps

That's it. Will directly and indirectly work most bodyparts. Will maybe do some abs and some hamstrings on one day per week. If so, then 1-2 sets of crunches to max, and 1-2 set of straight deadlift, or normal deadlift.

Comments?

Why cant you train hard and properly? To do that you dont need to train for 60-90 minutes. Search for Tabata or read about circuits.

Time? Well I am not you. But I work a 12 hour shift at a facility that is 1 1/2 hours from my home. That is 15 hours of my day eaten up. Add in the time it takes to prep for work and shower up after work and we are down to about 7-8 hours of time that must include sleep. I still manage to squeeze in some time to work out

Energy? Well thats why you need to do it to it. The workout is what will give you the energy :) You are hardly an old man.

Let's put it this way. I trained very seriously for 10 years and got really big. I used a LOT of my time on training, and I spent as LOT of money on food and supplements. I slept A LOT to maxmimize recovery.

Then I stopped - due to time restrictions, a crazy woman, and children - to train seriously. I lost a LOT of what I had been gaining over the years.

Do I want to devote 50-70 % of my life to training again? No way. It is not worth it. Who gets all the good jobs, and who makes a lot of money? Well - when I was "big" I ws poor as h... Today I am not so big, but I have far more money.

What I am interested in today, is to keep my existing shape.

I get up at 6:00. Afer delivering my childre in kindergarden, and going to work, I am home at 17:30. After preparing and eating dinner, and getting our children to bed, it is 19:00. I am doing my MBA on the evenings, so I need an hourssleep before starting my studies. Then it is 20:00. I have to go to bed at 23:00 to get enough sleep to mange my stressful job. If I am supposed to train seriously, then I will not be able to start to study before 21:00, which leave me with less than 2 hours to study each working day, something which is practically impossible. I will not sacrifice my future higher wages just to "look good". I am passed that stage.

So, basically. I am just interested in adpoting a very quick, basic work-out that lets's me keep my existing shape.

Heh I wish I could get my daughter to bed at 1900. The little imp won't settle down till at least 2000. Seriously though I feel you. I Just started working out again after a long time. The only supplement I have is protein. I work a minimum of 48 hours a week, often more is overtime is available. I also am a full time student seeking a teaching cetification. Honestly it is hard to find time to work out. Thankfully I do not seem to require much sleep. My body will not sleep more than six hours at a time and often I get 4 and feel little fatigue. I have been working out before my nightly studies and it seems to actually help me stay focused on the course work.

Great post !

I passed " that stage " years ago as well. Sadly, some people never do get past that stage and move on.

Don't get me wrong. Regular exercise is very important, but I've always felt that exercise should revolve around your life ....your life shouldn't revolve around exercise.

+1 rep.

I have been trying that also. Sometimes it works for me as it works for you. I get more focus and energy. However; other times I go totally down the drain afterwards, and manage absolutely nothing. The sad thing is that I am not able to predict when the one thing or the other happens :)

I support myself :)

I will however say that the three selected exercises provides a good work-out for the whole body. It is only be the abs and lower muscles of the back that are not mentioned here, but as I see it, you use both groups as stabilizers.

Barbell Full Squat

Exercise Data
Main Muscle Worked: Quadriceps
Other Muscles Worked: Hamstrings, Calves, Glutes
Equipment: Barbell
Mechanics Type: Compound

Pushups

Exercise Data
Main Muscle Worked: Chest
Other Muscles Worked: Triceps, Shoulders
Equipment: BodyOnly
Mechanics Type: Compound

Exercise Data Bent over barbell row
Main Muscle Worked: Middle Back
Other Muscles Worked: Biceps, Lats
Equipment: Barbell
Mechanics Type: Compound

So basically, as I see it, you work the whole body with this work-out.

I do a full body (10-12 exercises) H.I.T. for 27 minutes per workout. I do this workout twice per week.

That's 60 minutes per week and I am still making sound gains in strength and size.

HVT is over-utilized over-hyped.
