I am back!

Returning from a two year layoff of the fitness forum I am in better shape than ever. I look awesome, I fight like a movie star and I have the endurance of a racing horse. I have been fit for ten years now- much of that time reading feverishly on the science of how to eat sleep and train like a superhuman. I have mentored men and women into great shape and have been witness to some awesome transformations under my schooling. I will gladly give advice and perspective to any who ask. My specialties include martial arts, running and bodybuilding but am knowledgeable (or at least opinionated) on all things fitness.

Welcome back ! :)

Curious - do you have any academic credentials in the area of training, health and fitness ?

Do you have any certifications / designations in area of training, health and fitness ?

I am sorry to say that is a no but I have read literally hundreds of books on the subject. I work in medicine and have doctors and nursed come to me all the time for advice. I really am experienced. I know a lot of folks will like to say that because they ran a few times ten years ago so they tell people that they have been working out for ten years and so on but what I really am is this-- I work out a whole lot and I read a lot. I am a whole whole lotta athlete

So, you have no academic degrees, no professional designations and yet doctors and nurses come to you for advice.

Cool !

If you don't me asking - what sort of advice are doctors and nurses seeking from you ?

Well, you're not alone on this forum...there are some very experienced members on this forum ( and many with credentials ).

Again, welcome back !

Mostly weight loss and nutrition or other non medicine related topics. Often my workmates want to know how to get motivated and stay on track, what is a good exercise for this or for that, what do you think about atkins or whatever diet, or what workout programs look good or things of that nature.

You would be surprised how little nutrition they teach med students. Most medical professionals are just trying to get by like everyone else. They see the 500 lb man wondering how he got that way and the broken sickly elderly and they will still act like everyone else. They go outside to smoke and come back with mcdonalds. Part of that is ignorance and habit but another big part of it is a lack of guidance. Often, I think the people that I talk to know that there is healthy food out there but never realized they could fill their whole diet up with healthy foods that they like much less evaluated their schedule to allow regular exercise. I'm sure you have talked to a number of people who tell you that they could never eat healthy because they love food too much or don't have time for exercise but have time for lots of TV. Here I love all the things I eat- I think I eat like a king and yet keep my diet strict and trim with beastly regular workouts. Habits and perspective like this come from experience not school.

Now keep in mind that I never said I did not have credentials. That is like saying that I am utterly unqualified to have an opinion. I just did not get my information from a fat athletics instructor in a university. If it makes you feel better I did teach rehab for the developmentally disabled and elderly for a year- If that is what you wanna hear-

I have talked to lots of health professionals over the years and I very much appreciate the one who "do" over the ones who "went to school for it". Keep an eye out for me and if you feel I get something wrong go ahead and call me on it.

Hope this means we can still be friends

Interesting.

You would think doctors would be somewhat savvy about things like diets and weight loss - i.e Atkins.

You would be surprised how little nutrition they teach med students. Most medical professionals are just trying to get by like everyone else.

I suspect it might be because most competent doctors would simply refer their patients to registered dietitians or nutritionists if diet was an issue for a patient.

True, but again, in terms of guidance...this is where registered dietitians and / or nutritionists are of tremendous help IMO.

And, any 500 lb man who seeks some intervention, should do so in consult with a doctor IMO.

I know.

I simply asked you if you had any academic degrees, or professional designations in the are of health and fitness - of which you have none.

Fair enough - I have no problem with that at all.:)

That is like saying that I am utterly unqualified to have an opinion.

No one is suggesting that - your ' experience based ' opinion is as relevant and a valid and as welcome as the opinions of dozens of other ' experienced ' members on this forum.

I just did not get my information from a fat athletics instructor in a university.

Not sure how this is relevant ....but O.K.

I do not give medical or nutritional advice to the patients i am sorry if I came off that way. My co workers ask me my opinion and I give it and they come back for more. You seem to have me confused with a physician who prescribes diets. I am just a fit guy who works mostly with nurses but sees doctors on occasion and loves to talk fitness. Not because of the of the patients but because my bosses who are all good friends of mine come to me complaining of fat butt disorder and respect my opinion.

I work in a nursing home. The treatments given are almost always related to drugs as that is what the doctors prescribe. I help that happen. All my friends are free to go to another source. I am not a professional I am an enthusiast. My name tag does not say dietitian.

i am certain that if you are a knowledgeable individual and you look especially fit and sound like you know what your talking about people come to you for your opinion. The fact that they are medical professionals is almost irrelevant

It is much like if you have a friend who reads dentistry books everyday and one day you get a toothache. You know what a dentist is but you have a knowledgeable friend that you work with who seems to have all the right answers. It does not matter if you are a lawyer or a chiropractor- if you want to know about teeth you will go to a tooth guy

In my world I would change the diet of everyone at my work and encourage rehab whenever possible. But it is not my world. Most of them are waiting to die and are on the right track to do so. That is really what medicine is all about these days. Keeping them alive until they die. Health never enters into it.

As for trivia on extreme fat people in excess of 400 lbs and bedridden diets are kept low on potassium and sometimes a recommended restriction on sodium with recommendations for general activity. I have never seen anything close to a recovery from one of these individuals. I don't think I have to tell you why that is.

Hardly.

You don't have an academic qualifications whatsoever .....why would I think you're a G.P. ?

No worries....I got that....you're not a professional.

That's O.K. by me.:)

True.

And by the same token as going to a professional like a dentist for teeth - if I wanted to know about training, heath and fitness I would go to someone with professional credentials first.
