When do you change cycles?

When do you decide that it's time to change cycles from bulking to cutting or vise-versa? Do you have a set length of time (Bulk for 3 months, cut for 2) or do you wait until you reach a certain body fat percentage (Bulk until you reach 15% BF, then cut to 8% BF)

It is my understanding that your metabolism adjusts to your calorie intake. When your body has a caloric surplus, your metabolism will eventually burn more calories as well as naturally produce more protein. When you are not consuming as many calories, your body will adjust and not burn as much. When does your metabolism become efficient in this way?

Hi,

There is a good article at T-Nation at the moment regarding cutting/bulking cycles. Check it out here:

Thanks for the link. Some good info. The article mentions bulking for 6-8 weeks, then cutting for 2-3 weeks.
However, there is no mention of WHY they chose to say that. I'm more interested in sources and the science of what and why people choose the lengths of their cycle periods.

I do not know how much science there is to it. Not much really. If you have a lofty bulking goal, say, you want to gain 75lbs and be pretty lean when you get there. You might bulk up 100lbs, then cut 25 to get where you are.

That will take a long time, the bulk might be a few years.

On the other hand, if you want to gain 10 - 15 lbs of lean mass. You might gain 20 - 35 lbs, then cut back to what you want. This will take much less time. Say, bulk for 5 months or so, then cut to where you want to be.

The point is that it is going to depend upon what each persons goals are.

Some people may not want to go over a certain BF% (like you said) so they will bulk to that point, then cut for a bit, whatever it takes to make them comfertable for bulking again.

Bah, t-nation isn't god. Its up to you, your goals, your individual physique, and mentality.
