Saunas: Do they cut Body Fat?

Hi people,
Just need to ask a bit of advice on this, ive seen professional athletes such as MMA fighters and Boxers using Saunas to cut weight.
Now I always thought this just drained your body of fluids to get your weight down and doesnt lose any body fat from you but however my Gym Instructor tells me its effective for losing body fat(if used safely).
Is it a good way of losing body fat because I may do about 40 minutes in the Sauna daily until Ive cut the weight.
Any experiences or advice on this will be appreciated :)

When your in a sauna your just losing water weight, not body fat. MMA fighters do this to get lose weight temp for their fights.

Unless theres some scientific theory that the heat in the sauna will "melt away the fat" which I have never heard of.

Naturally, you can lose water weight in the sauna, but as soon as you get out and start drinking fluids again, you gain it back. Body fat is different. You don't sweat it off. If you want to reduce body fat you have to exercise and eat fewer bad calories.

Saunas will cause you to lose water weight and become dehydrated. As already said, athletes such as fighters, boxers and jockeys use this method to temporarily lose weight for weigh-ins so they can remain in the competitive division.

I have not heard or read anything that suggests that saunas actually assist in the loss of body fat....

His gym instructor is an idiot :yelrotflmao:

Not completely, there is one study where researches investigated the effect of heat on metabolism and found that heat and humidity increased metabolic rate.

The results were not conclusive but in saying that its long been known the temperature increases metabolic rate. There could be an argument that the sauna increases metabolic rate.

I dont agree that it is an "effective" way of decreasing body fat though.

Doesn't body fat burn at something like 340C so you would have to be pretty hot to burn fat. Sweating only carries a trace of fat. Sweating alot also takes water out of the blood stream which makes it difficult to transfer oxygen to brain, this is why people get dizzy spells when exercising.

Maybe if you were to spend your time in the sauna calculating your calorie intake deficit whilst doing HIIT on a treadmill, you could say it was an effective means of dropping bodyfat :)

I'm not one to think that anecdotal evidence outweighs science - but this one I just can't believe. It's hot as hell in TX, and crazy humid too (at least it is in the southern parts - not as much in the northern parts). Anyway, my point is, we have days that literally feel like saunas outside - and there are a whole lotta fat people here.

Your gym instructor is wrong.

I got here and thought, "Well, that's putting it succinctly." Then I read the rest of the thread and each successive post just got sillier and sillier.

First, somebody referred to some kind of pseudo-science study. Then we started talking about magical saunas. Next, ChrisJG brought up some nutty notion of someone calculating caloric intake while sitting in a sauna and that made me laugh. Just when I recovered from that little chuckle, someone else mentioned Harry Potter and I guffawed out loud. Finally, the individual at the end brought up Texas humidity and it just blew my mind when he said "there are a whole lot of fat people here." ROFLOL

OMG, you people are outrageous! I'm from Texas originally and I can vouch for the fat people.

This thread has just degenerated into an asylum. Thanks guys! :yelrotflmao:

Yeah thats true. I was talking strictly about what the body is doing physiologically while it is in the sauna. There are alot of variables outside of the limted environment of the sauna. Like diet etc.

But I fully agree (once again) that the sauna isnt an effective way of losing body fat even though there is an increase in mets.
