Cate's Diary

I just heard back from my friend to say she has permission to visit her husband & do does his brothers. Thank goodness for that!
Yes thank goodness! So glad to hear that.
Hope the night goes better now you're learning all the ins and outs of the crate!

Sad about your friend, at least allowing the visits will help. I am sorry for his condition.

Archie really looks like a great dog, you made a good choice!

That's a relief at least.
It is, LaMa.

Thanks, Liza. Archie does follow some commands, like sit & I am saying wait when a car comes or I need a rest & he's doing well. I have been looking up crate training & am throwing the odd treat in there & he wanders in & out now.

Thanks, Rob. Our friend has had a history of illness & has had a rough trot.
Archie is just perfect for us. I love terriers.
We exhausted one another today :)

It’s exhausting settling in a new dog anyway let alone all the exercise .
pleased your friend can now visit . Must be horrible to be so ill and not allowed to see your nearest and dearest

Exhausting each other sounds perfect to me. Terriers (a terrier-fan friend calls them "terroriers") are usually very energetic! Lovely dogs though if they get enough exercise.

I am loving the Archie Adventures. I had a terrible day today, I feel a dog would be the perfect antidote to my troubles. I love that he has settled in so well - I think you and G live in a dog's dream location.

Hi, Petal, LaMa & Em. We had a really good night & Archie settled himself down very quickly last night, with one tiny bark & about 4 slight whines. I read up on crate training a bit more yesterday & somewhere it said to throw a treat in the crate every now & then to establish a happy association with it, so I did. I also moved it around so that it's facing the side of the tv cabinet & not out towards our chairs & the entrance to our house. It has a Mexican woollen blanket draped over the back & sides & I think would feel cozy & safe. I woke at 7.15 this morning, which was a much more respectable time & he only made a slight noise after hearing G & I talking. Good boy, Archie! We have had him a week today :beating:
G has gone off to play golf again today. I'm not sure what I'll do, except for a couple of walks. I won't go so far I think in one walk, but will break it up into two.
I might do some housework today as I have neglected it a little since getting Archie. I'll do some ironing, a little food prepping & maybe make nut butter, with some seeds added as I have so many. I need them blitzed as I have a chipped tooth & was booked in to have it fixed when the corona hit.
The sun is shining after a big frost. It will still be chilly out, but I love days like this :)

That's good the crate is getting figured out as a happy place :)
Sounds like some good plans for the day too! What is going on with dentists where you are Cate--do you know when you'll be able to get back to one?

Thanks, Liza & LaMa. I walked too far today & exhausted myself. I need to rest along the way & to remember that it's uphill all the way home! :svengo:

Thanks for the pictures, lovely place to walk and a good dog for company sounds great. The uphill going home not as great, but living on top of a hill is nice.

I don't get a chance to take many pictures as Archie wants to keep walking! I'm going to take my shooting stick with me on my walks as I just need to sit every now & then & I'm not sitting on the ground where leeches may well be waiting. It's a bit awkward with a dog on a lead & a walking stick, but I'll give it a go. I need to work out how to attach the stick to my bum bag so I can take photos, rather than just drop it on the ground. Actually I'll try attaching the lead to my bumbag instead. I only use the bum bag at home. They are so practical but I don't want to look even daggier than I am already when I'm out & about. It has bandaids, a small drink, hat, puffer, plastic bag for rubbish (or raided lemons), dog treats, notepaper & pencil (thanks for the lemons ;) ), bandage for snakebite & gloves. Very handy.
I'm going to take it easy today. I'm having a game of golf tomorrow & again on Wednesday & I feel like having a quiet day. I like Sundays to feel different. Sunday night we have a little chocolate (about 6 squares). I would like to find some chocolate that is special, rather than the usual Cadbury dark chocolate I buy. We have 2 peppermint, 2 rum'n'raisin & 2 almond squares.
Archie was a good boy again last night & slept well. We had a little scare about 9.30 when he shot outside when I went to get some wood out of the barrow. He came back within a minute but G & I got a big scare. We were both trying not to panic. I'll make sure one of us holds him next time & bring more inside at a time. I would feel sick if he went missing. I feel sick just thinking about it.

I'm sure he'll learn quickly. I carry a backpack with essentials everywhere I go; what people think of me is nowhere near as important as having a bottle of water and a blister kit.

That's a lot of stuff to fit in--very handy indeed! Nice to have all you need for a proper outing :)
Enjoy your quiet day.

LaMa & Lisa. Being prepared & comfortable is more important to me than how I look too.
We went for a nice walk with Archie & I almost have my steps for the day. I have one of those retractable dog leads & I attached it to my bumbag with his old collar & that worked really well. He really loves a walk, but I think his favourite place is on my lap. He just jumped off to bark at a pair of Currawongs in his yard & I quickly snuck my laptop onto my lap. He spends all evening on my lap. When we get back from walks I put him in his yard for a while. I'm trying to get him used to lots of different things. We really do need a doggy door though. Mostly we have been leaving the sliding door open to the decking most of the time, except when he's in his crate overnight, but it is very cold. We measured up the two different doors that are possibilities & I will check out the alternatives again now.

Cate your walk looks very much like mine . lol I do love hearing about Archie's escapades. That week sure went quickly . I think he has made you very happy .

Hi, Petal. I'm glad that you like hearing about Archie's escapades. He is making us both very happy. The last week has just flown!

It’s so funny - in a couple of months when he is used to the place, you will feel more relaxed that he won’t run off. You’ll probably be stricter with laptime as well. It’s really interesting to read about the process.
