Alligatorob's Diary

You never cease to amaze me, Rob. 7 lbs in a week at this stage is incredible. It will take a while for your brain to catch up with your body. This is the stage where I fell apart a bit. Just be aware that you may have trouble handling the attention of some and sometimes lack of attention when others get used to you being this size. It was a weird time for me.
I love hearing about your hikes. Have you had your bike out recently or are you enjoying the walks more?

Happy Earth Day y'all!

It was a good day, ate well, exercised, and I feel good. Got the bike out and did a brief ride, my first on paved roads. Nothing challenging but fun. I also got a walk in, but shorter than yesterday, only 4 km.
Taking your waist measurement | The Heart Foundation
Here´s a more thorough explanation. Looks like you need to go down a tiny bit more to be on the right side of the waist measurements.
Thanks LaMa, that was helpful. The good news is my lower measure, 38 inches was the right one. The less good news is they say it needs to be 37 or less. But I am still almost there, I started at 62 inches.

Thanks Cate, it is a time I have been worrying about for a while. Do you have any words of wisdom to offer? I value your opinions, and your experience could help me. Oh, I rode the bike today, just a coincidence, I have been doing more hiking and less biking lately, not necessarily by design.
overweight at last!
Thanks Amy, I like that! To most folks outside this forum it probably sounds like a very strange thing to day, but we understand.

Holy smokes 7 pounds in 1 week!! Geez!
Great about the waistline dropping to a good measurement too!
I think it's nice that you've taken on a whole new lifestyle along with the diet--enjoying your hiking, biking, working out.
great job!

This big whoosh may well have been your muscles letting go of their water weight now that they're used to their new activity level. The timeline is about right. Also: might it be time to start eating 1400+ kcal/day?

Not really I'm sorry. I was vigilant for quite some time but then started adding sweet treats & not keeping track of my calories at all & not weighing myself either in the end. I don't think you'll have the same issues. It really does seem like it's time you eased back a little to let your body adjust in preparation for maintenance. I think adding some more healthy calories to bring them up to 1400 maybe as Lama suggests would be a good idea. I think it's best to start preparing now for the future you. You don't want to start having major deficits now with all your extra exercise or you may risk getting back into the binging mentality.

It was a good day, I ate well, got in a good but not challenging walk, ~7 km, and feel good tonight.

Had a birthday party for 2 of the grandkids. It was our first get together since the virus thing, and I hope it was ok. They have started slowly opening things up here, not that we were ever as shut down as most y'all. Reopened State Parks a couple of days ago. So we had a family picnic at the closest park, about 15 people. We did try to observe social distancing, hand washing, no handshakes or hugs, etc. I wasn't 100% comfortable, but it felt good to get out and see some folks again. I hope we did the right thing. I ate a bit more of the party food than normal, 2 fried chicken wings and a bite of birthday cake, but did fine. Picture of the outing, you can see we were not alone, but it wasn't too crowded.

Kind of an embarrassing question, according to my walking app it took 4 hours and 20 minutes of walking. I did forget to turn the app off on a couple of breaks and on after a few others, but that's not far off. Not much of a pace for a 8 km hike. On the easier parts I was able to get below 15 min/km, but on the steepest parts I was much slower, maybe 50 min/km. I actually was slower going down than up, it is harder, and I was more tired. I do like sticking to goals like this one, the challenge is fun. And for a while I was beginning to think it might not be possible. After Saturday I do think its possible. But will take a while, probably longer than for the snow to melt.

Had not thought of that until you and LaMa said so. I can see it. Our mountains however are not so green as Austria's. Looking at the picture makes me sorry I turned back when I did, I could have gone farther. But I think I did the right thing, the trip down is always harder than the trip up, walking to exhaustion would be a mistake.

Thanks! It did feel good. I don't plan to do this everyday, an attempt once every week or two is all. I don't feel bad today, but I can tell I worked my legs hard yesterday. And right on the food and water, as the hike gets longer this may turn into an all day thing.

It was a surprise to see the others, but nice to talk to folks about the route and mountain. As I said they were not hikers, but elk horn hunters. Starting a club is an interesting idea, I will give it some thought. Not sure how much interest I could find here. I do kind of like hiking alone, I get to set the pace, decide where to go, etc. But I know for safety being alone is not the best choice, and having some company can be fun. On the safety thing, my new route is up the face of the mountain, cell reception is excellent there. Early attempts were up the canyons, with little to no reception. What I miss about the canyons is the water, lovely little streams with lots of vegetation, nothing like that on the face. On the other hand I kept running into impassible dead ends in the canyons. This may be the only route to the top.

To be honest this is not like an unclimbed mountain. The truth is I am trying to get up the west face, from my house. There is a rough four wheel drive road on the east side, the other side, and I have actually driven to where I am trying to hike. Impossible until July or August, when the last of the snow is gone. The east side is not as steep. The lake I rode my bike around in the fall, Mantua, is on the east side, should be able to look down on it when I make it to the top. And the top isn't really the top of the mountain, its just the top of the ridge. Once there I can turn south and keep climbing, maybe one day I will have the option to do that. My goal is just to get to the top I can see from the house, hiking from the house.

Cate, I did watch the Waltz to the end, thanks so much for putting me onto it. Great stuff!

1278 is the year the earliest known written copy of the Avesta. The Avesta is the primary collection of religious texts of Zoroastrianism, it is very old, but until that time was passed on orally. I have always found Zoroastrianism quite interesting. It predates modern religions and likely influenced Judaism, Christianity, Islam, Bahá'í, and Buddhism. It is still practiced today.

Birthday party sounds lovely. It will take a while to go back to "normal" - I'm surprised they've eased restrictions. Ours may go into June the way it is sounding right now. Also, surprised by your energy! Makes me what to go hiking when things are back to normal a bit. Sounds like you're making great progress, Rob!

Rob I’m late to the party but congratulations to you .:party:

I agree with the extra calories and you do need to eat a certain amount . You could try adding some healthy snacks like some avocado or a hard boiled egg easily to get your Cals up a bit.
Your commitment and discipline has been absolutely top class

It was a good day, I ate well, exercised, and feel good tonight. No walk today, the weather was bad, but I did 2 workouts.
I think it's nice that you've taken on a whole new lifestyle along with the diet--enjoying your hiking, biking, working out.
Thanks Liza, it does feel good, though I have to admit sometimes it feels a bit unreal. Maybe what Cate meant when she said the body our runs the brain... In a number of ways I do feel like a different person, but am not quite yet sure who or what he is.

Thanks LaMa, that is a reasonable explanation, and it makes me feel a bit better. When I first saw the "whoosh" as you call it I was worried, it just did not seem reasonable.
Birthday party sounds lovely.
It was, I miss parties and being with people.

Thanks Petal, and your snack suggestions sound good, and reasonable. But you know me, I change things slowly. Its hard for me to change something that has worked so well. On the other hand I do know change has to come.

It was in 1207 that Genghis Khan founded the Mongol Empire. Genghis had been made leader of the Mongols just a year earlier. Under his leadership and subsequently his descendants the Mongol Empire grew to become the second largest empire in history, second only to the British Empire at its peak.

You changing so many habits instead of just your food is what gives me hope your weightloss will be sustainable despite being so radical. But I'm not surprised it doesn't feel quite real yet.

I really like the way you're getting your mind used to the idea of what maintenance will be - sorting out what possible "extra" snacks you can have to bring you up to where you'll need to be eating, thinking it through, and almost steeling yourself for that shift. But as for this:
But you know me, I change things slowly.
"change things slowly"? I think we can all see that the changes you leapt into foot-first about a year ago were not slow at all - it was a massive change undertaken instantly - zap! The weight loss has taken a year, sure, but the change was on the spot, pretty much - no gradual reduction in eating for you - just "I'm going to do it" and you did it! :D

That is a really interesting observation Rob. I hope you enjoy getting to know the new you while out on your lovely walks.

Today I ate well, exercised but not as much as some days, and feel fine. But to be honest I am having trouble finding my usual enthusiasm, I sure this will pass, and so long as I eat well and stay on track things will be good.

Yeah, that feeling is strong today. Not sure why.

Thanks Amy, you made me smile. You caught me on this one, yes I did have a kind of switch turn one day, May 15, 2019, and made a big change all at once. However since then I have not changed much except slowly and with consideration. Thanks for pointing this out.
I hope you enjoy getting to know the new you while out on your lovely walks.
Not so much, but that is a good idea. I was contemplating a big walk this weekend, maybe I will do something longer and slower to let me think a bit and enjoy things a bit more. We'll see.

Yes there's something magical about walking that sorts things out in the brain without even trying. It is a way into a deep knowing i think...
But to be honest I am having trouble finding my usual enthusiasm, I sure this will pass, and so long as I eat well and stay on track things will be good.
It's hard when the enthusiasm wanes but yes as long as you stick to a good healthy way of being i'm sure it will pass.

Hey Rob, You're doing stellar. I know when I got to a similar BMI range, I questioned a lot of things and felt quite bummed a lot. None of it was very helpful and I wish I had not let it sway me as much as it did. It was all part of getting comfortable with the new me and I think I should have taken charge of it, or welcomed the challenge, a little sooner. I don't know if that makes sense. Basically: accept it and it'll be OK and rely on the healthy things you've done for yourself.

Hey Rob, welcome to the world of BMI "overweight" - something that I very rarely dip out of into "normal" weight. Those standards are tough to beat - although I wouldn't be shocked to see you there in the future, given when you've accomplished so far.

My walks are like this. Each day I have 2 walks & they are never fast. I want to enjoy them & they are my meditation. I stop & appreciate things like fungus or a mossy rock & I take photos. Sometimes I sit on a log & close my eyes & listen to birdsong or the rustling of leaves in the canopy.
This might be something you can do with the grandkids later, Rob. It would be so much fun taking them hiking. I haven't seen our grandkids since this all started & really miss them. I'm glad you got to see yours recently.

Hey Rob,
I hope you enjoy your walk wherever it takes you too. Stop and smell the roses ( or the peach blossom )
