Hey! Before you read my dairy you should know my starting weight was 242lbs and my height is 6’0 and I’m 17 years old

September 2019- I lost an average of 2 pounds a week and have been the lowest weight since I’ve weighed myself last December. 228 pounds compared to 242 pounds in December . I have also cut my calories to about 1200 calories a day and walk an average of 5 miles a day.

October 2019- I have continued my steady loss of 1-2 pounds a week on average and continued my diet. I walk 5 miles a day 5 days a week.

I am aware that weight loss is slow but i get discouraged seeing how much further I have to go to get to my target weight of 180lbs. I’m 17 and I wanna enjoy my last couple years before I have to actually become an “adult” but I also feel like I cannot enjoy it at the current weight I’m at.
I also need some advice on how to stop yourself from thinking about food and how to motivate yourself to get up and run/walk everyday.

2 pounds a week is excellent progress!
...I also feel like I cannot enjoy it at the current weight I’m at.
What do you think would change if you were suddenly at your target weight?

I don´t know how to stop people from thinking about food while they´re in a caloric deficit but distraction is probably your best bet. Maybe try to get the most possible food bang for your calorie buck by adding having a lot of fruit, veg, and water to fill up on few calories and enough protein and healthy fats to stay full for longer. About the motivation: first try to make it enjoyable (finding nice trails, listening to podcasts, whatever floats your boat), and second try to make it a solid habit as soon as possible so you don´t have to think about it. If you had to convince yourself to brush your teeth before bed every night it would be an unpleasant chore but because you always do it that way you don´t even think about it. That means it´s often helpful to always go for your walk/run at the same point in the day.

thank you so much for your reply :) I enjoy skateboarding a lot and wish I was in better shape so I could keep up with friends etc..
And as for the distraction method, I will try it next time I have a craving for food ! I’ll make sure to keep you updated

Hey I Guess, welcome to the Forum, starting this diary is a great start.

I was once an overweight 17 year old, I can empathize with your feelings about it. I did not handle it very well, you have the chance to do better than that. It can be hard at my age to be patient and realize that weight loss is a slow process, at 17 I know that's even harder. Its just human nature.

Maybe focusing on the process could help, keeping close track of your diet and exercise, logging frequently. It can help you appreciate your progress even on days that show little or no weight loss. There are some good apps for doing it, I just started using Cronometer: Track nutrition & count calories there are lots of other choices. Best to just choose one and use it. You can post the results of your logging here, I find that helps keep me on track and it will allow others to more intelligently comment, advise, and support you.

LaMa has given you some good advice on distracting yourself, there are lots of ways of doing that, you need to find what works for you. If you need more read through the diaries here you'll see what others do. And while you are doing that don't hesitate to comment or ask questions, you will find people here friendly and helpful. Don't worry about your age, there are others here close to your age, and in this place age doesn't matter much.

Skateboarding is good exercise, if you like it do it. You can start slow and build up. I think you will be surprised how quickly you will be able to improve, it will be faster than the weight loss.

Best of luck to you, I look forward to reading about your progress!

Hello @Iguessigotit
The first and the most important thing is your diet. I mean the quality of food you eat and the amounts. So you can describe what exactly you eat.

also need some advice on how to stop yourself from thinking about food and how to motivate yourself to get up and run/walk everyday.
Do you have a lot of stress? It can block you to go further with your weight loss journey.

thank you so much for the reply and the kind words.
currently downloading an app to log my progress to maybe motivate me a little more during plateaus/ days I’m feeling bad about it. I like playing video games as well and after exercising I’m especially hungry so I’ve decided to take some time to play some games with friends whenever I start getting that craving for food. I’ve also been starting to skateboard more with friends which I feel has contributed to my success these past weeks .
EDIT: I just weighed myself and have lost 3 pounds this week ! I’m currently down to 221

Those are good ideas to forget about hunger, but if you will find out why exactly you are hungry so often, it will work better in the future than escaping from this thought.

amazing :) i feel so much healthier . I don’t know if it’s the exercise or eating better or weight loss(most likely all 3) but my self esteem has risen immensely. I didn’t think I was gonna be able to do it but I’m doing it and I’m so happy.
It is so nice to know that you are happy while your weight loss journey! That is a proof that it doesn't have to be a bad time :)
I think your good mood is because of both- exercises and a healthy diet :) Don't give up! you are on the right path! :beating:
Keep posting about your achievements. Wish you all good!
