213 calories from sugar per day, which is 55g or 13 teaspoons, is the maximum recommended by the Australian guidelines.

I’ve never heard this recommendation here in the US or much of a discussion of the connection between sugar and mental health.

Hey Tru (I see that is what some folks call you here, hope its ok if I do), this is the first time I've posted on your diary. To be honest I find you a bit intimidating, your dedication to exercise is great, but I am far from there. I know that I should find some kind of exercise to start doing but am not even sure where to start. I am 66 and have been substantially overweight most of my life, as a result my feet and knees are not up to a lot of walking or other exercise involving them.

When I was was younger I really liked walking and hiking, I have tried other exercise over the years, but can't honestly say I ever enjoyed it. I guess maybe its kind of like being on a diet, I did not enjoy this at first but have kind of gotten used to it. Right now I am occupying a lot of my thoughts with staying focused on eating right, and it doesn't feel too bad.

Anyway you seem to be the expert any suggestions for someone like me would be appreciated.

And just seeing you here and your success helps us all, thanks for that. Had to say that.

What everyone has told me (and I really agree with) is to do exercise you like so you will do it. Walking and hiking are fantastic exercise, and can be as beneficial for people like us who don't exercise all that much as the more hardcore exercises are for people like LaMa and Tru . (I am taking a break from digging a ditch as I write this - yard work which I like, and it is great exercise for me. I have never been able to do anything remotely like what Tru does, even when I was fit!)

:waving: I was just this minute wishing you luck with the ditch-digging Marsia!

Trusylver - I'm like alligatorob, simultaneously a bit intimidated, and very grateful that like others here you share your knowledge and records of the way to success! :)

As @Marsia said the important thing is choosing an exercise you enjoy. If you enjoy swimming, it is a great cardio exercise however as we age weight bearing exercise is important to maintain good bone health so an exercise class like water aerobics can support your bodyweight taking pressure away from your knees and hips while still doing some resistance exercises. They use foam weights and the water provides resistance.

Triceps are starting to really feel the pushups, as most of them have been tricep pushups to comply with physio who want minimal pec work over the next couple of weeks.

Tonight will be in the gym working the rehab exercises again.

Hubby and I also have our big farm shed cleaned out finally, ready to give the floor a new coat of paint and start the process of building new commercial quality home gym.

Pushups - complete for the day
Rehab at gym - Complete for tonight - increased seated row up to 65 kg (143 lb)

Music - Wonder-woman sound track
Watched The Blues defeat the Cane Toads in Origin Football !! Go the Blues !!!! in between sets
Training in an empty gym after the first 5 minutes :D
Then some Queen blasting in the car on the drive home (30 minutes)- We are the Champions

Budget wise it is going to cost $5000 + to get my home gym set up with just the basics, good equipment is expensive and average home gym equipment is weak and not safe for lifting heavy.

most of the cost is in just a few pieces of equipment, my must haves are

2 Lifting Platforms (I will make these out of timber to competition spec) one to use for bench press, the other for squat and deadlift.
Competition Bench with safety bars
Commercial Power cage (expandable)
Commercial Quality flat bench
Competition standard power bar with extra deep knurling
Set of calibrated powerlifting plates

Most of the little stuff I already have including a standard bar, several sets of adjustable dumbbells, a good selection of standard plates to fit bar and DBs, assorted medicine balls up to 30 kg, assorted kettle-bells, Preacher bench, Heavy bag, an old heavy bag for sand bag carries, wobble board, bands, hula hoops, skipping rope (looking worn, needs replacing) and stationary bike. A lot of this stuff is a bit dusty and needs a good wipe down and the bike lives in bubs play room and gets used while she is playing but I have not been tracking this exercise.

Wow! Is it for your family's use only, Tru or will you give lessons there?

The aim is to coach at home as well, the expense is because normal home gym equipment is not rated for the weights I lift so have a high chance of breaking under strain which is rather dangerous, so even if the plan was just personal use I would need the same level of quality.

however to coach at home I will also need to buy a new water tank for the shed so I have water for the bathroom and toilet.

A normal home gym bench for bench press like the York bench (good name brand for home fitness) has a rating of 150 kg, that is not just for the weight lifted but the combined weight of lifter and weights. This bench would have a high chance of collapse. An example of this is a lifter who died recently in the UK because a bench collapsed under him, commercial gyms do not always have strong enough benches either.

A competition bench also has the correct safety bars, so a failed lift wont kill you, when the weight gets heavy a spotter, no matter how strong or experienced may not be able to save you if something goes badly wrong. While I lift within my limits most of the time it is actually not safe to max out at the gym even with multiple spotters.

Today’s target is 124 push-ups. Under Medicare, Australians are entitled to six to ten visits to a clinical psychologist for mental health counselling every year, covered up to the value of $124.50 per session. You can access these sessions under a “Mental Health Care Plan”, which can be put into place by your GP, so don’t feel like help is out of reach.

Your home gym will be excellent by the sounds of it.
We are so lucky to have our Medicare system & should fight to keep it. I'm one of the lucky ones who have a mental healthcare plan & know that I have access to affordable counselling.

Today’s target is 200 push-ups. The burden of mental ill health is especially felt by our First Nations people. Currently in Australia, Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islanders are over 200% more likely to die by suicide than non-Indigenous Australians. They are also 270% more likely to be experiencing mental distress. The mental health of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islanders has been identified as a priority by the Mental Health Commission.

I have certainly had plenty of physical activity this morning, half my pushups done, and chipped and prepared 3 garden beds for my Daughters giant sunflowers to be planted, narrowly missed a giant earthworm (he was roughly a foot long.

built up quite a sweat, 22 degrees (71 F for the metric deficient) this winter morning.

Also today, planted lavender seeds, Marigolds and Nasturtiums.

When they are big enough the Lavender and wormwood will be planted out into the peafowl enclosures for natural pest control.

It is unfortunate that gladioli don't like a tropical climate because they are bubs birth flower and the local Bunnings has some yellow ones, her birth colour, and a colour she is really attracted to.

hubby is also considering plowing one field to plant a crop of normal sunflowers for the peafowl, the only challenge there is keeping the roos away from them when they sprout.

A very productive morning, Tru. It is freezing here & has been sleeting. There is lots of snow on the mountains!

I think it is hard for some to understand the wide range of climates we have here in Aus. looking at the weather forecast you guys are in for some yucky weather over the next few days.

Finished at the gym for the night with a bit of a walk around showing where I train.

Rehab exercises done
Push-ups done

All your gardening sounds wonderful! Could you put some bird netting on part of your sunflower crop so you save it for your own birds? I planted a hedge of wild plums so there are enough that we get some for us! Thank you for posting for the "metric deficient" among us! That's incredible that it's sleeting for Cate, and you are in summer temps! I didn't know lavender staves off pests - I have wanted to plant more for making tea, so will definitely do that. Happy gardening and lifting - your new gym sounds amazing!
