Cate's Diary

Hi Cate! If your brain on vacation is anything like mine, it gave up just before a change happened. I do that all the time, just when change is inevitable, I loose faith, but then if I try again with even more patience and trust next time, I see the change through.

Also there are times where I feel like I just HAVE to have something sweet or I will go out of my skin, so I have dates in the fridge for just such times. Usually one or two do the trick, and occasionally 3 or 4. I also have been allowing myself a fattening smoothie sweetened with a couple of dates and I just eat less the rest of the day so I can have it. Is there a food like that you could treat yourself to? I love soy milk blended with oranges and ice - it's called an "orange julius" in the US because there is a chain in shopping malls that has made this since I was a kid and that is the name of their business, but I think they use real milk.

Anyway, hope you are feeling more yourself again, and that you are not putting too much pressure on yourself to lose the weight. I have to remind myself that the important thing is enjoying life and health!!!

Hi Cate, quick question for you. Do you know of a step counter where you don't have to sync it with a smart phone for it to work, as I don't have a smart phone? Like maybe there are ones you can connect with a USB or bluetooth to your laptop, or ones you can set the time manually and just look at the display for the day as to how many steps you have taken? My low tech watch is behind on the time and it will no longer set to the correct time, so I am looking at water resistant watches for a replacement.

Hi, Marsia. An orange usually does the trick. I don't often crave sweets. I'm going to put yesterday down to tiredness. I felt really tired yesterday. It was also a reaction to sticking with 5:2 for almost 2 months & only losing 1 kg. I'm fine today, thanks Hon & back on the bike.
I don't know of a step counter that doesn't require syncing to a smartphone, I'm sorry.
The kids are still here so I should pay them some more attention. We drop them off at 10.30 & whoops I'm not dressed yet!

Thanks Cate! I'll wait until I inherit my hubby's old phone. Hope you have a great time with the kids and so glad you are back on track!!!

My fitbit synced with my laptop just fine, it has a cable for it, even. You just download the app to your computer instead of your phone. I´m going to assume other brands offer the same possibility.

Marsia I was going to say a fit bit too . Or just get an old fashioned step counter that you can pop on your waist band .

Cate hope you are feeling better today. I like oranges too , I love the sound of the orange drink Marsia described. Sometimes I just squeeze an orange . Must buy some today .

Tiredness and the cold turn me to food in addition to emotional void . Sadly sweet things make me more tired . So let's try cut them out this week .

Petal- sweet things send your blood sugar soaring & then it plummets. Oranges are good, I'm being good...I am absolutely over yesterday. I feel much better thanks, hon. All good xoxo

Hey Cate, sorry to hear you had a bad food day, it happens. I know you like it, but I have reservations about the 5:2 diet as I think for every action, there's an equal but opposite reaction, so if you are eating very low calories twice a week, that need for a quick fix of sugar and energy is more likely to occur. But I support whatever choice you make.

How is the no wine going? I had some last night but the agreement was to start Sunday anyway I believe, so I am still on track.

Hey, Em. My cravings have been much less doing 5:2 & so has my headspace. I used to have days like that much more often.
The no wine is going fine. I really want to see what happens without it. We can do this!

Hello Cate! So the 5:2 ... 5 days regular eating and 2 days fasting? Hm ... I like the sounds of it a lot. I bet it takes super discipline, though. I am a bit bitchy when I don't eat, lol.

Hi, Jen. It's nice having you back. I look forward to seeing more photos of your new house. Love the kitchen!
5:2 suits me because I actually only feel like I am on a diet 5 days a week, instead of every day, but it does take some getting used to. If I decide on a "fast" day but wake up really hungry, then I change it to a different day. I'm doing one today.
This site will explain it- https://thefastdiet.co.uk/how-many-calories-on-a-non-fast-day/
I try to do Mon or Tue & then Thu or Fri. One week I did Mon & Tue & actually found that fairly easy. I may even decide to do that this week. I haven't been losing this time around (I did it back in 2016 & lost consistently) but I am going to stick with it as I feel much better mentally doing it. 5:2 wasn't designed as a weight-loss method. It was more about regenerating cells I think. I don't feel fanatical about it, like some do, especially in their forum.
The change for me this time around is that I am sticking with it without the success on the scales so far. I do feel confident that it will come. Meanwhile, I am not drinking any wine for a week to see if that makes a difference. I also think I am not consuming enough protein on fast days (or any day maybe) & am going to change that. I'll boil a couple of eggs now for later on.
It's a beautiful day today I'm expecting the dog groomer soon. Our little ole dog will be 17 next month & each time we have her done, we think it will be the last time. After a haircut & nail trim, she's like a puppy again.

Thumbs up for puppy love :) My hairdresser is coming back from vacation today and I´ll be on her doorstep when she opens her shop hoping she´ll be able to fit me in somewhere. I hadn´t known she´d be gone for four weeks and haven´t had my hair cut since late June!

Awww I love dogs . We have a couple . Hope the grooming goes well.
Happy hair cut LaMa . At the moment I could do with a cut every few weeks its growing so quick .
I read up on the 5:2 Cate . From what I can see it works really quickly in the beginning with people who have lots and lots of weight to lose but slower for people with little weight to lose so patience needed . And you are being patient .

It sounds like hair cut day. G lined up for one too- not from the dog groomer though, but from me. I made it short!
You're right, Petal I am being patient. I think it will work & it's good to re-learn hunger/thirst. Mind you, I will be happy when some weight drops off!

It's after 6.15 pm & I have only had 327 cals & am not hungry. The boiled egg was the trick! I have had a small tub of yoghurt & will have another when we get home from a meeting.
I may do my second one tomorrow as I have to have a fasting blood test in the morning. I'll see.

Thank you for the explanation! It sounds interesting and I'm definitely going to try it! Tues and Fri might be good days for me this week.

Good job yesterday and hoping today goes well too. Boiled eggs are a perfect snack, methinks. Love them because they are so easy!

Oh, excellent. I'm glad you did!
I had 2 walnuts, a very small piece of ham & a tiny piece of cheese. Total 450 cals.
That's amazing how fast it adds up to 500 calories! Sometimes I have a low calorie breakfast and it just doesn't stick to my ribs, and I end up having second breakfast like Bilbo Baggins. By that time I am up to 500 calories already. I think you are doing amazing!
