Sparrows Experiment

Yesterdays Tri class was pretty intense. We did 40 min plyometrics and abs, then spin then I did a quick full body weight workout. Quick meaning 2 sets of 12, 2 exercises each body part. I've lost some power, that much is clear. At least weight room power :) I was down weight on almost everything. It was nice to be back lifting a little though. Today I took the day off. I coached and deep cleaned my house. That was in and of itself a full body workout :) I'm very sore from the plyometrics..which means, of course, I'm going to do more of them!
Tomorrow I'm hoping to go run in the heat. If I'm gym-bound I'm going to do a longer run and then swim.
I'm down 2 pounds this week. Thats a nice thing.

Yea!!! You go woman!!

Swam 4000 yds today. Felt AWESOME and fast. I've had a few bad eating days. I'm back on track tomorrow. Along with keeping up the tri training I've also decided to do the half marathon I did last fall, again. It might be tricky balancing the 2 different training schedules and activities, but I'll try. I'm allowing a 16 week training program, starting tomorrow. I'll try to do it this time injury-free.

Indeed, I'd think you'd want to focus on one to get maximum performance in that event?

Well, we'll see. I like to experiment to see how things work (hence my diary name I guess). I suspect it will be a fine balance but I think one will feed the other. Triathlons go all the way through the end of Sept. The last one I'll be doing is Sept 22 on my bday. The half marathon is Oct 7th. For olympic distance tris the run is 6.2 miles. A half marathon is 13.1. I will keep my cross training for the tri's and maintain what I have in swimming and biking, but increase my running base...which can only mean better things for my triathlons later in the summer. My downfall at my last tri was my run, hands down. If thats the thing I work to strengthen it should kill two birds with one stone. I just will have to make sure I do what it takes to stay injury-free.
Todays workout:
run:
10 min 6.5 pace
next 20 min alternating 2 min at 7.0 pace and 1 min 9.5 pace (all out sprint)
1 hour level 4 spin

Took yesterday off. I'm really busy between the two coaching jobs and private lessons. Its been hard to fit in workouts. I also have to sub this week for the tri class. Yesterday for tri class I did a swim workshop specific to open water stuff. It went well, but of course I didn't get to get in.

Today though I was able to swim from 5am-5:35am before a private lesson and the age group swimmers and then at the gym I ran before I coached the Masters. I was very pleased with my performance today:
Swim: 1600 yds. Lots of pace stuff
Run 6.0 miles: 7 min warm up 6.5 pace
7 min 7.0
7 min 7.5
7 min 7.0
7 min 6.5
sprint remaining time. My time was 51:10 for 6 miles which is an average of 8:30 pace. I was happy with that especially since I still had energy when I was done.

Tri class was awesome, 27 people attended. I had them go spin for 45 min (I did too) which was a GREAT class. Very big hills, heavy resistance. Loved it. Then straight up to the tread where I'd created a photocopied 30 min run full of increasing intervals. Then core. Fantastic workout. My legs felt so dang strong today and I was able to hold a 7:45 pace no problem. That was my base pace. My fast intervals went to 6:10/min miles. Fantastic.

Well, I've been able to lurk and be entertained by some other diaries in the section this morning. Never for a lack of drama at this site  but anyway...
I'm not working out today. Its another day that doesn't fit but who cares, yesterday was hard. I'm realizing (it took a while to get through my hard head) that a day off after a hard workout is actually more of a benefit to me than a hinderance. I seem to be stronger and prevent injuries doing it that way. I know, this is not new knews. Most of you have figured out this little fact long ago...My type "A" personality has prevented me from believing it.
I'm taking my daughters to Libby Lou today. They don't know and will be really excited. After work we'll go on a picnic then to the mall to Libby Lou and grab some ice cream on the way home. I feel like I've hardly seen them with my insane schedule this week. Tonight I'm taking my hubby out for his birthday. The big 3-0.

Indeed - muscles rebuild in rest, not while working them. Enjoy the time off. I too am taking a much unaccustomed day off from the gym, so I can kinda relate.

Today I decided to head outside the gym. As cool as their childcare is, my kids are a bit sick of it since I'm there both to workout, and to work. My daughter expressed a desire to become more "healthy" last night. so today we got her and the 4 yr old new running shoes and headed to the track. My son rode his bike, my older dtr ran/walked and the younger one kinda did her own thing ;) It was extremely distracting since they all instantly seemed hot, bored or thirsty but I made it 4 miles before I decided not to torture them any longer. They each took turns going around with me at various points in my run. It was hot, 90+ at noon but thats exactly what I need to force myself to do for the next race. It wasn't THAT bad. I held 8:30 pace pretty regularly (when I was able to do a full mile without kids!) anyway, don't feel super "worked out" but it was good to at least do something.

I'm back again and have enjoyed catching up on your posts. You have an incredible amount of motivation. I can't wait to see if you meet you triathalon goals! Best of luck.

THanks! I will...eventually!!!

I wasn't going to post today, but I have time. I dind't do anything today. ha. I reallllly wanted to. In fact I really just wanted to go back out in the heat and run, but its just me and the kids this week and the poor things have to do enough stuff they don't want to in the name of my training. Instead I took a nap :) A LONG one, I must've needed to catch up. It was wonderful. I've eaten great this weekend. My daughter wanting to eat "healthier" has made me tighten up my boot straps a bit as well as I know shes looking at me to see whats healthy, whats not. I hope to carry it on into the week.
My goal this week is to get broken down. Because of my weird work schedule that will be hard but I'm going to do what I can to really get tired. I know thats strange...but the tri is in 2 weeks and after this week its more restful before the race. I can't rest if I'm not beat up though. If I can't do it because of my lack of time, I just won't rest next week. I'll maintain.
its all good. I actually feel more confident with this one, even though I've done less working out this month!

Pretty intense spin class for 45 minutes followed by 20 min tempo run before I had to rush out and coach. I'm finding much value in quality workouts vs quantity workouts since my time is crunched. Tonight I'll be working at the gym for more lessons but I hope to squeeze in about 45 min swim or weights afterwards. I have a massive headache at the moment :(

Spent the night with a bowl next to my bed! not sure what was up but I think it was some dehydration. I felt sooo sick around dinner time. I went to bed early and slept 11 hours! Went to tri class but had very minimal energy.
Tri class: Cardio Bosu 45 min, Bosu Abs, 25 min swim
The whole thing wiped me out which is unusual. Bosu workouts ARE tough though. Those little half balls look so unassuming!
I've eaten very little today because of my caution with my tummy but I'll do better tomorrow

Feel better soon..:)
