easier to bulk when overweight

i was talkin to my friend tellin him bout how i wanna get stronger and everything, he says i should bulk then cut cuz its easier to build loads of muscle when you have some size to start with...im just wondering if it makes building muscle any easier when your a little overweight as opposed to cuttin first and starting from there...
 
He is right, but for the wrong reasons.

Being over weight wont help you in any way. However...

If you try to strip off the fat, you'll loose muscle as well. So by the time you have lost all the fat then gained a bit of fat and muscle when you start bulking, your right back where you started.

However... then more muscle you have the faster your metabolism works and so its much much easyer to loose weight.

So yeah - Bulk 1st cut later.

Being 5'9 180, you can't be too fat. Maybe just a high bf%? Idk, I know kids that are 5'10 or so and around 180 and aren't really that fat.

But I def agree with Russ. I sort of started the same way. Like he said, the more muscle you have, the easier it will be to lose weight.
 
im not dangerously overweight or anything close, but i do have some body fat, id say mid to low 20%'s...so its really for myself and to get in shape for football next year...ive heard that your supposed to eat over your maintainance calories every day, but im not really lookin to gain weight...just get stronger...so is gaining fat with muscle absolutely necessary to bulk?
 
Its not 'necessary' its just unfortunate that it happens. If you are over weight then it means that you already eat more than you burn off, so you wont gain as much fat when bulking as a really skinny guy would.

To give your muscles everything they need you keep eatting. You should eat more than you need so you can be 100% sure that your muscles have all the fule they need. This extra unused energy turns to fat.
 
Yeah. Make it every other night, not every night.

This will hinder your growth, but then again, will also improve you fitness
