Starting over, full, split, cardio aaarrgg!?!?

Hey all.

Ive been a gym goer for around 14 months now, but am in need of a bit of clarity and focus.

I started as as every newbie, trying to do it all and getting nowhere. However, for around 6 months i got a proper split program, starting on an upper/lower split, and moving onto push/pull. Ive thrown in some full body to try and trim up pre holiday but am now back and needing to start fresh.

Im 23, 5 foot 11 and around 77 kg, my top half is devoping but not as well as i want whilst i 'suffer' from collecting fat on my ass and legs. my legs are quilt well built naturally, so would rather strip fat than keep bulking them although i still keep up squats and deads.

My ass is my curse and im determined to shift it, for too long ive been trying to burn fat and build muscle and am doing neither as effective as i should be doing. So do i switch to a full body and add cardio or keep up the push pull with the odd extra HIIT session?

I have football training on a thursday and a match most saturdays, and am struggling to fit in an effective program around that.

Ultimately i do not want to body build but i do want to bulk up a bit, but should my goal be a lower body fat%??? i know winters here and clothes are back on again but i want the ass gone!!!

My diet is better now although ive developed a weakness (thats another post) and im getting around 2200/2500 kcals. im still in the dark as to whether i should be eating carbs post workout or not (help, once and for all, help!). Do i build muscle and keep the cardio to try and shift fat, or do i spend an intensive few weeks burning kcals?

Any help is very much appreciated

Welcome back Ben. If time is of the essence, I would go with a full body routine for sure. Hell, I have found that I just like full body routines after years of splits. Try some Romanian Deadlifts for your...umm...glute problem.

Ok, you don't want a body-part split then. A full-body 3x/wk with an emphasis on hypertrophy and strength is probably what you want.

Definately carbs+protein. In fact, you want high-moderate to high GI carbs, with a quick digesting/metabolising protein.

It's alot, but if you tackle one a day, it'll tell you more than we can in 6 months.

Now, you're in the middle of football season, so Cressey's "Ultimate Off-Season Workout Manual" is not optimal, but there are a number of other good books or premades on the internet.

I'd recommend a full-body 3x/wk for the frequency and the oppotunities to vary the parameters within the same week.

Ben

Get in your protein/carb meal pwo. You use whey? If so it would be good to get some malto or dextrose for this.
