Trying to Cut...What Type of Lifting?

Hi, I'm a 20-year-old male, I'm 5'6", 150 lbs., with a pretty toned body and a bit-above average muscle mass. I want to begin cutting, so I can shed overall body fat (hopefully under my chin and around my midsection) to get a bit more cut/lean.

I plan to start a fairly rigorous cardio routine while improving my diet to leaner foods and slightly smaller portions.

(1) Any advice on the cardio routine?

(2) Should I continue with my 4-day-a-week lifting routine? If so, how should I be lifting/with what intensity?

Thanks a lot for your help!

Hey thanks a lot for the advice. One last question: should I still be taking protein and L-Glutamine supplements while doing this new workout routine? If so, any suggestions as to how often? Thanks again.

Use the protein when you need it. It's not specifically a bulking thing so the only reason you should be taking it in the first place is because you need another protein source. This shouldn't change when you're cutting.

I believe glutamine is the same story, but I'm not sure.

2 - weight program stays the same, only diet and cardio change

Not true. If he is doing something like 10x3 it will need to change. Keep the reps in the 6-10 rep range. 3-sets, and do supersets.

DO 6-8 intervals of HIIT after weight training or on off days, or both. Just do not burn out, listen to your body.

6-10 is too high, 10 would be ok, maybe for isolations, but I would keep the big lifts below 6, or at least 6 and below.

I agree that supersets would be great, but why change the 10 sets of 3 reps. 10 sets is a little bit too many in my opinion. 5 X 5, or 6 X 4, or 4 X 6 would be better.

L-glutamine supplementation is unnecessary. research has shown that it only really benefits cancer patients, AIDS patients, and severe burn victims.

so, use up your supply, and don't re-stock. waste of money really.

You actually need more protein while cutting then you do bulking.

I tend to keep reps lower (<5) when cutting. Muscle maintenance is a matter of weight on the bar (Akt-mTOR likes intensity); muscle growth is more a function of volume and progressive overload.
