There comes a point when push-ups become an endurance activity. Consider push-up simply a bench press with your bodyweight. Weight fluctuations aside, your own resistance is going to remain consistent. Now imagine lifting a barbell of the same weight over and over again. There reaches a point when lifting it will have more to do with your slow-twitch fibers than your fast-twitch fibers...
So in the short-term, yes, it will help your push-ups. In the long-term, if you want to get good at push-ups, you better do push-ups.
