any tips when you feel a cold comming?

Anyone got any neat tricks and tips when you feel a cold comming? last night before i went to bed i had a sore throat, now i just woke up and my throat is more sore and i got a headache. No fever yet.
Any tips on what a guy can do to minimize the damage? Id hate to have to skip a day at the gym (tomorrow) because of a stupid cold.

Skip the workout. Don't spread your illness around.

ofcource, if im still sick tomorrow i wont workout, but im asking for tips to AVOID getting really ill, as im not "sick" yet, but i can definitly feel it comming.

You need to figure out if its a fever or a cold.

If its a fever then eat nothing and only drink water. Stay in bed and sleep as much as u can.

If its a cold then hot drinks, eat lots of food, and chill out.

Starve a fever, feed a cold.
"Eating and fasting cause brief fluctuations in the amount of two chemical messengers called cytokines.

After a meal, the average level of the cytokine gamma interferon (INF-gamma) in the blood of six volunteers increased by 450%. INF-gamma stimulates the body's defense against chronic infections that are associated with colds. INF-gamma triggers the release of killer white blood cells, which destroy infected cells." -

I was under the impression that I should just eat every single thing in sight whenever I am sick, be it fever or cold.

thanks manofkent! I took my temp this morning, it was only 36.something, cant remember. Ill try again now and see if its changed.

a fever is an infection in the blood, you need to get ur blood sugar as low as pos so it dies out

a cold is an infection in the lungs so food will make u stonger.

Lots of vitamin c and an anti-hystamine (spelling?)

Yup my doctor says that when you feel like your getting sick, or if u are already there you should take 6000mg of vitamin C daily until you get better...i know it seems like a lot, but i can speak on her behalf as she does this herself, and on my own as i speak from personal expirience that this works!

well

A fever is fighting an infection or a virus. A cold is a virus.

Basically nothing you can do for a cold, but wait it out, usually takes 5-7 days. Now you should take Vitamin C and the advice above to help the body fight it, because if you don't it will turn into a sinus infection and last 2-3 weeks as opposed to the 5-7 day common cold.

The "cold" is a bug/virus you can't kill it or get rid of it, only your white blood cells can defeat it.

all the drugs we have in this world, fight Bacteria infections and try to "curb" viruses, IE help the body fight it.

Most Vacines are small does's of Viruses that your body can produce white blood cells to defeat, once you have those blodd cells, you are immune.....until the Virus mutates....perfect example, the chicken pox, they have a vacine out for it, but it has mutated and kids are getting a mild form of it now, my daughter got it, but only had a few spots, my two boys did not get it.

Anyway, not much you can do, but live through it. I hate when I get that sore throat...means 5-7 days of feeling like crap.... :(

Everytime I feel a cold coming on I was told to take Zinc pills/vitamens. I don't know exactly how it works, but it does if you catch it while you feel a little sore throat, or stuffy nose.. or chest congestion. I'm one to get the worst cold out there.. My immune is great, but I'll still catch the worse of anything going around. I usually get sick twice a year. My suggestion if you feel its a cold take zinc. Fevers I usually just tough it out. If you start to get to warm take a colder temp shower.

not really, a "fever" is an infection in the blood, a cold in an infection in the lungs.

The difference between a virus and an infection is that a virus can pass thru the air, and an infection is something that develops inside the body. So a virus can become an infection but they are not the same thing.

The main topic of this discussion is whether you should treat a blood infection any different to a lung infection.

answer - yes. eat food to make u stronger if you have a lung infection. stop eating to lower the blood sugar and kill off a blood infection.

Vitamin C is no good without iron. Iron breaks down the Vit C, otherwise it is too big for the body to use. Vit C only helps build new haemoglobin which carry oxygen in the red blood cells. It wont fight the infection but may make you feel a bit better.

So you can get the HIV virus simply by standing next to somebody with the HIV virus?

A virus IS an infection... There is a difference between a viral infection and a bacterial infection - that being the way our bodies fight / protect against them.

Actually mate, the difference between a virus and bacteria is that a virus is a single cell which cannot multiply by it's self cos it is surrounded by a layer of protein, therefore it has to attach its self to a living cell. Bacteria can multiply by its self, but because it is so much larger and heavier its less likely to be passed thru the air.

No, as the HIV virus is in the blood. The only contagious viruses are those which harbour in the lungs, or airway's (which is common as the tissue is soft and easy for the virus to attach it's self.)

sorry maybe you misunderstood me...

A fever...is the bodies natural reaction to fight off an infection Bacterial, viral whatever it is, part of your bodies defense system with white blood cells.

When you have a fever, you should take Ancetmophin (sp?) Tylenol or/and Ibubrofrin (sp?) Advil you should Rotate between the two as directed. For me Advil works better then Tylenol for fevers.

If it last more then a couple of days, I would go see a Doctor.

sore throat could be anything, especially with a fever.

Some it up, we all can give you different advice, bottom line if you are not feeling better after 2-3 days, you should seek a Doctors opinion. Normally a common cold, you lose the sore throat after day 2 and switches to nasal or chest cough, stuffiness, etc.

I tried that zinc, and everything as well, alot of times I just use my Allergy medicine, works the same, but not as good, due to it is a cold, not a allergy. But clears it up some what.

But, most people on this board are rather healthy people and eat better then most of society, so if it is still bothering you....I would see a Doctor asap. make sure it is not something worse.
