Punchbags

I'm thinking of getting a punchbag (one of the large hanging ones) to add a little more variety into my cardio. My question is: how cardiovascular is bagwork? I have no experience of boxing or any kind of martial art so, I'm a little clueless in this respect.

Any advice appreciated.

Try this....punch the air 1000 times per arm. If you are breathing hard afte rthat, imagine every punch hittinga bag..really hard.

be sure to make a propper fist, so when you hit, you dont **** up your arm.. so take it easy in the beginning, dont hit so hard.
make the "blade" of the wrist be a straight line together with the forearm, if you know what i mean.. so your fist wont bend eiher way when you hit something, but the forearm will take the force..

That's not a good plan at all. If you've never had any experience, you just go out and throw 2000 punches? Chances are, you'll eff yourself up. Here's what I suggest:

Invest the money in boxing lessons and take it from there. That way you'll know if you like it or not before you buy. And yes, it is good cardio.

try downloading a instructional video on bag work or read a book on the subject

or best plainly follow 'Lee' advice take some boxing lessons

To be honest, I dont really have the time for boxing lessons but, I think they have a bag at the gym (in the aerobics studio) - I'm sure they won't mind if I try it out. Someone may even give me some pointers.

An instructional video sounds like a good idea too - do you know of any good ones?

Dude, read my post. I want to add variety to my cardio.

I already run, I already swim, I already cycle - I wanted something else. Its known as cross-training but, thanks for your input all the same...
