Protein during your workout

My friend and I were wondering if it would be beneficial if we drank the protein shake while we were at the gym. Mainly because of the "drink it right after your workout or you'll canabilize(sp)" theory. We both have like a 20 minute drive home after the gym and were wondering if we were screwing ourselves over at all with such a long duration of proteinlessness(yes that is a word, I just made it up). I've asked a guy about it and he said something about it being a waste of time. Should we take it with us to the gym, or is that pointless?
 
How long are you getting protein before working out? If it's more than 2 hours, I'd do the protein shake half an hour or so before you workout. Then just eat when you get home.
 
Its actually more than a waste of time. Consuming ANYTHING during your workout will actually decrease your IGF production. You will not be helping by consuming protein during your workout.

...Protein does not halt CATABOLISM, carbs do. (not cannabolism lolYou are much better of consuming about 100 grams of maltodextrin or dextrose (or ultrafuel) mixed with some protein. The simple carbs basically cause an insulin spike which replenishes your glycogen levels and snaps you out of the catabolic state.

Example: 3 scoops (75 grams high GI carbs) of ultrafuel, 1 scoop (23 grams protein) of whey

Post workout. knock it back within 5 minutes of your workout finishing if you can. There is whats known as a metabolic window after your workout. Don't wait longer than 1 hour before you consume your post workout meal which should be the biggest protein rich meal of the day.
 
I recommend taking protein as directed. Most Protein suppliments direct you to take their product before and after your workout. I also take casein before I go to bed and usually have a shake in the morning. So I usually take 4 shakes a day and have small meals. 7-8 high protein meals a day (spaced out) works well for me.
