What should I eat before I work out?

Ok, when I get up in the morning, I eat breakfast then go to school. Then I have lunch at 10:30 in the morning. That's very early for me, because I'm not hungry for lunch, but I have to eat to keep my metabolism up. I then work out after school which is at 3:00. That means for 10:30-3:00 I have had nothing to eat. Do you think I should eat something before I go to work out, to keep my metabolism up, and if so, what do you think of a Slimfast Shake or Protein bars?

thanks

You should eat 60to90min before a weight training session. It should include carbs and protein.

What's in slimfast?

How do I do that if Im in school and can't eat anything before I work out?

Should I just not eat anything at all before I work out, or eat something 5 min. before I work out?

I would eat nothing but you certanity won't have a great workout and make sure you eat ASAP after you train.

First thing I eat/drink is a protein drink (with wheatgerms, beeryeast, chromium and ginger..).
Then I either do exercise after 45 minutes, or I eat a sandwich half an hour later.
I think a protein/fruit smoothie is excellent in most cases because it contains fast proteins and fast carbs which stops the catabolic effects of a night not eating.

Yes, eat before you workout! Take some food with you to school. Rice cakes and a protein drinks maybe? That's something easy that you could pack and would provide you with the carbs and protein you need.

bringing a protein shake to school for a meal worked out great for me. If your teacher really won't let you have it in class, just go for a 'bathroom break'. G'luck!

Hi Molly

Molly Packing foods like smoothies and proties bars gets WAY to costly. Buying protien bars everyday is bad for the money drawer and they taste pretty bad not to mention almost all of them are just as bad for you as candy bars. I dont think you need much protien in your diet for someone your age and gender. What you eat is way enough protien. It just a way for the companys to make mooola, i pack apples and oranges before working out. They taste soooooooooo good and they arnt heavy so you can eat them right before you work out. The energy they give you burns quick and it is very good for losing weight. You will feel hungry again very fast beacuse of this but just gorge on fruits you wont gain weight and its way better for you than a protien bar and cheaper. Protien bars are not good to use for weight loss. You wont stick with them your entire life. Build a good habbit and eat normall food dont rely on pills and bars and powders it wont last. I forgot to mention the reason behind not eating before you work out. Reason is the body shunts blood to the stomach to do the work of digesting or whatever you want to call it :) Fruits take VERY little effort for your body to break down and it burns sooooooo well.

I always have a protein shake rather than a protein bar about 45mins - 1hr before I workout to give me both carbs (from the milk) and protein. Either would be better than none though Molly - about 2 - 2:30 and your energy levels should be up by the time you work out.

^I agree with chris a protien shake in milk or water is great.
