same goals, different training schemes

Dear all,

I'm sorry I don't write in German. My husband and I just moved to Germany (he works at a university) and we didn't have much time to learn the language yet, also because we have a baby and are still tired from the relocation.

We both granted us two evenings to go to a fitness center. We want to loose weight and improve our stamina. Interestingly, we both got totally different training schemes eventhough our goals are the same. And I must honestly say that my scheme looks much more difficult or advanced than his. How come? Because I want to loose more weight, which kept sticking on me after the pregnancy?

My scheme looks like this:

crosstrainer hills programme as long as possible, preferable increase time every week, later increase speed and difficulty

break

warm up for 3 minutes if neccessary
crunches on David bench
knee lifting while hanging in the air and resting both lower arms on a support
torso rotation
hyperextension bench with weights

seated leg press 1 or 2-legged 16-14-12
standing lunges with weights 12-12
inclined dumbbell chest press on a bench 12-12-12
pectoral fly 1-armed 12-10-10
rear deltoid 12-10-10
lat pull down 12-12-12
dumbbell row 12-10-10
dumbbell side raises 12-12-12

Do you think this programme with improve my stamina, make me lose weight and look a bit more healthy again? The trainer said that it's not such good idea to do stamina training and weights at the same day but as I really cannot train more than two days a week we'll try it like this, with a break inbetween both units.

Though my husband's scheme looks more or less the same than mine he mostly works with machines, which means he can train with the normal people and I have to train inbetween the strong guys. Weired!

Thanks a lot,

Renee

Hi,

becaus of my bad englisch just a short version:

To loose weight you have to reduce your nutrition. There's no way to reduce your weight only by sports.
- negative ernergy balance - is the way to loose weight - that means you have to use more energy up than you absorb!

To your sport programme i can't say anything.

Different training schemes are based on the varieties between man and woman and also because of the fitness at the beginning of the training - i think so!

Probably there's another user which can give a more detailed answer :winke:

Dear Aninaj,

yes, you are probably right about the negative energy balance. I did not think about that in the first place but it seems logical. Well, I'm eating rather normal again, which might bring me back to a normal shape one day but it will probably take a long time. Considering that, it looks like my training programme is better than that of my husband as it seems to be more tiresome as I don't only have to use my muscles but with some exercises also my balance as my body's not much supported, right?

regards,
Renee

Hi

As a beginner the training scheme seems to be ok for you.

The more you get used to the exercises and the weights you should increase the resistance. Dont be afraid of becoming a "muscle-freak" - as a woman you dont have the genetics to build up too much muscles.

And as it was mentioned before: look at your calorie intake. By reducing calories to below maintenance levels, you are not providing your body with sufficient energy. In so doing you are forcing the body to get its energy from a source other than ingested food - namely your bodyfat which is stored calories of energy.

For building up a good stamina it is nessesary to do long-distance workouts (or long-lasting if you train on stationary machines)

bye

Dear Bjoern,

thanks a lot for your answer. Well, actually I am afraid of getting too much muscles, but as I can currently only do the last exercise with two tiny 2kg weights I guess that will take a while :winke:
...and then people say that one gets strong from carrying kids around *sigh*

Well, basically I don't want to make a diet. It's difficult enough at the moment to find products I know how to cook with, and find shops with vegetables which don't taste like water. Sorry to say, vegetables are just much tastier around the Mediterranean. Looks like we keep the nice stuff and export the water bombs.

Seriously, I just want to eat normal like I used to do and hope to get back to a decent weight with my exercise. I believe that a diet will cause more damage than that it's useful, especially as I don't want to diet all my life to prevent gaining weight again after stopping with it.

What do you understand under long-lasting workouts? At the moment I can only workout for 30 minutes on the crosstrainer with a rather low resistance. After that I just fall off the machine. But I hope to increase the length soon.

regards,
Renee

protest: of course it's possible to...

... lose weight resp. body fat just by sports! if you deny this fact you haven't yet understood the principle of a negative energy balance!
may I remind you to the archives and the "FAQ's" of this forum?

Oh dear, I guess this whole discussion is about my name, isn't it? Though I don't understand that skinhead girl story.

Well, actually, my name is written with an accent but this forum didn't accept it when enrolling and also not when writing here. Might be connected to my british keyboard, which doesn't have 'real' accent-keys anyway and that sign is usually created with a combination of keys or numbers.

Btw, I'm from Greece, but was born in France. My mother moved back to her homecountry short time after my birth. Renee is my second name but I usually use it as it's shorter (and nicer).

Would it be possible to name me a similar forum in english? I really looked hard to find one but only found forums where there's a lot of discussion about getting gigantic muscles, injecting something to loose fat and take other unhealthy stuff. I got the URL for this forum from someone in the studio I train.

Renee

different training schemes are legitimate

dear renée,
the discussion is not really about your name:winke: (as you can see). this webpage offers a lot of good (because it's objective) information (articles, FAQ's, and especially the forum) and all the common myths concerning training and nutrition are refuted in a clearly understanding manner. unfortunately it's in german and therefore not the appropriate source of information for you. but as far as I know, there exists a similar webpage in english. I'll ask thomas markmann for it, I'm sure he can help you.

have a nice evening,
kurt

p.s.: what about learning some german?:winke:

Renee,

sorry fort the name discussion. The guys here like to discuss everything, even names. My name is Thomas and I´m the boards admin.

As Kurt already said there is a lot of wrong information and myths published by certain fitness magazines and websites. The german section of fitness.com is a very objective and critical platform always trying to clear out typical fitness myths. Unfortunately there is no corresponding English section anymore.. you know: the financial situation of the IT market …

There are also plenty of discussion boards and fitness websites in English language but I´m sure sure, most of them don´t provide objective information. Thus its important to be critical whenever you read something about fitness and weightloss sensations.

Most of the guys here have quite a good grasp of English language. I´m sure they´re willing to help you and discuss your questions - even if its about skinhead girls or names…:winke:

Welcome to fitness.com,
Tom
