Yet another smaller butt topic

Well after having my butt annoy me for so many years I've finally decided to do something about it, though I want to make sure I'm doing it right. I'm 20yrs about 115lbs, very slender upper body but my butt just doesnt match. Last tuesday I started going for a jog/walk in the morning usually for about 50min (mostly walk cause I can't run to save my life but I'm getting there,) if I keep this up, will it help me gain a smaller and firmer rear? There's also this huge hill along the route I chose, is it best to avoid it or will it help? I've been making healthier eating choices as well, though I'm not very knowledgeable of what my body needs.

Also, whats the deal with squats and lunges? Will they make the butt bigger or smaller? It seems the exercises for a smaller but are the same recommended for getting a bigger one, so I'm confused and not sure if I should do them or not.

Thanks for the help!

Welcome to the forum - how tall are you?

You might want to post your workout and diet in detail to give a better idea of where you're at.

I've had great results using lunges and squats strengthening the lower body. As for making the butt bigger/smaller, it depends on where you're starting out at and what your diet is. If your but is big to begin with because of weight, then I'd think having a calorie deficit (from your diet and your exercising) would cause you to lose weight, making your butt smaller. If your butt was small to begin with, I'd think a calorie surplus (from diet) plus the tearing down and rebuilding of muscle to make it stronger from exercising would build muscle in the area, causing it to grow bigger. But I'm no expert - I just know that the squats and lunges have made a big difference in my abilities.

You can do certain exercises to help build muscle in a certain area - many things will help the glutes. However, for getting fat off of your butt, all the walking in the world - or anything else for that matter - may or may not do it. Your body may very well just hold fat in that area more than in other areas, and you can't change that. You can create a caloric deficit through diet and exercise that will help to reduce your body fat. However, you may always carry what you feel is a disproportionate amount of fat in that area.

I don't mean to discourage you, only to make sure you don't go into this with unrealistic expectations of spot reduction (making one thing smaller) - then get discouraged when that doesn't happen.

Thanks for the replies! I know spot reduction is non existant but all my fat seems to reside in the lower body butt/thighs, so if I burn more calories then I eat, naturally wont that slim the area?

I'm about 5'3"
Here's is my workout plan:

50 min run/walk - everyday about an hour after breakfast

Every other day after run:
Lunges, no weights, high reps
1 dumbell squats, low weight
Pushups
Crunches
Dumbell curls
Tricep dumbell extensions

Trying to get a well rounded workout, any suggestions are appreciated.

As for diet, it usually goes something like this:
Breakfast: Cereal or Oatmeal + banana
Lunch: Usually somesort of Sandwich wrap with meat and lettuce + fruit or carrots
Dinner varies but usually: meat, rice, and vegetables
If I get hungry in between those times I'll eat yogurt or some kind of fruit.
