Yet another deadlift question...

In my never ending quest to de-wimpify myself I have been slowly pushing my deadlifts up. Well on Friday I broke in to new weight territory, but something odd happened. While doing the lift I started to see black umm tiny mobile dots all over my vision. I kept lift and finished the set, and it did not repeat.

What happened and should I be concerned?

happenes to me when I lift heavy. you probably held your breath for a bit too long or something, just take a couple quick breaths between reps with the weight on the floor.
Also, make sure you're not dehydrated!

Does it feel like blood is rushing to your head?

You're probably dehyrated or maybe your breathing is out of sync.

i got those same black dots when i maxed about a month ago on Deads. I mean, i took a breath before i started the lift but i was probably the big load i was lifting. Once i slowly got it up i felt like taking the rest of the day off

big breath in before you lift, keep it in your belly an exhale at the top.
I disagree. Intra-abdominal and thoracic pressure should be maintained throughout the entire lift. Releasing the air at the top of the lift will only encourage poor spinal position during the eccentric phase.

but you're not lifting the weight down, you're letting it go :p Besides, after a heavy DL rep you will pretty much have to breathe again, it can take a while to get it up there.

Maybe you have poor lung "power". I've never had to breathe during the lift even when maxing out.

My form is far better when keeping this interior pressure maintained. I've checked other people and they always have better form when doing the same compared to letting the air out at the top.

I have big lunges, tested it in biology class, I held the most air :D

The thing is, during max effort, for most people, they won't be able to hold their breath very long. One should probably start pressing some air through the lips when you get to the sticking point, that helps get past it. Dave Tate talks all about it in "the dead zone" it is in the technique article sticky.

Well pressing "some air" is different than releasing all of the air. ;) you should have said that in the first place.

I'll check out the article.

it doesn't matter where it is published, it's who wrote it that matters. People are quick to bash t nation, but there are a lot of good authors there.
