would this make it possible to lose fat mainly and gain a very small amount ofmuscle?

Whoever said that is mistaken, its exactly the same. That like saying 100 tonnes of brick is heavier than 100 tonnes of feathers.:p

So 100 cals of only carbs are the same as 100 cals of only protein?

what is meant by the "a cal is not a carb" is that you have different nutrition in a cal, different carbs, different protein and different fats. You know, the difference of eating 500 cals of a MCdonalds burger and 500 cals of chicken breast. or broccoli, for that matter.

100 tonnes of brick is not heavier than 100 tonnes of feathers. but it sure as hell aint the same.

Bad comparrison. I could eat 100 kcals worth of lard or I could eat 100 kcals worth of chicken. While they are both 100kcals, they will impact the body quite differently.

alright I thought of another thing regarding this topic.

So I've been cutting like i've said. The past three days I have been eating too much veggies and fruits etc, all healthy type food pretty much but I haven't been getting a calorie defecit. So I have ended up with just maintance calories the past three days. So on days where I get carried away like this and realize by supper time I will have gone all the way up to my maintance... should I eat another 500 or so calories and maybe turn something into muscle? I've been doing a full body workout three days a week so.... what do you guys think?

The body works on trends. One day isn't going to make any tangible difference.

So...stay at maintainence, eat another 500, it doesn't really matter.

haha chill out? I was never excited bro. Anyway. I understand over the course of a day it won't make any noticeable difference.. but If I eat the extra 500 calories 60 days out of the year it would make a difference. So my question is, will my body build muscle on these days given I have a calorie excess and have worked out in the past 48 hours?

Not really, no. And you can't really add it up after an entire year. Your body works in trends of that moment. If I go through 4 bulking cycles a year and eat nothing for one day out of each of those, the sum of my calories don't matter.

-3000calsX4days= -12000 calories=-x lbs muscle? No.

Alright so i have a question about what your saying, sorry to add to all the confusion. So say i'm trying to gain muscle and lose fat, would staggering my cals be a good idea. For instance what if i go 3 days above 3 below 3 above and 3 below so on and so on........would that benefit me at all??? Or will my body get used to that trend also?

The problem I see with that in the end the days of surplus cancel out the days of deficit, and your body can't really get into a groove where it's burning fat, and it can't get into a groove of muscle building.

so to answer my question then... on days where I mess up and eat all the way up to my maintance, I should just leave it at that and not eat any extra calories then?

Just treat it as a cheat meal of sorts.

Sam, like MarkmyWords said, your body won't be able to get into any kind of mode. If you want to just maintain, I don't think it matters.

does the body need to get into "grooves" though? I thought that if you had a calorie surplus for the day and you trained you would gain muscle. This is all very confusing. It seems to me that all of the ideas i've presented should work. If I am cutting, but end up eating my maintance by supper, I might as well eat 500 extra calories so my body will have the materials for growth! Right?? Why waste a day maintaining.
