Workout DVDs

Exercise DVDs?

Does anyone have any recommendations for home exercise dvds? I'd like something good to get my heart rate up and blood pumping. Thanks!

I have the Yoga Booty Ballet series...

It's actually really easy and I suppose it's more for people who've *just* started exercising, as it's not really high impact.

However, I find the workouts great to do as a warm up for other exercises.
The hostesses are really bubbly and positive, so when you feel tired and not in the mood for exercise, this is a great and easy way to get your blood flowing and to get pumped up to kick some butt! :D

Each workout is about 20 minutes and involves a little yoga/be positive/set your mantra section, a cardio workout (with dance inspired moves, my favourite part) and in the end either a ballet exercise for balance or a quick ab workout etc.

The Firm series is great option to work at home. They combine cardio and light weight training; these are really effective and as they indicate you tend to see the results in 10 workouts.

I have seen it work on me. They rock. You find the set in Target or other stores. You can also check the information online at

When I first started, I used a combo of Denise Austin dvds: Boot Camp Total Body Blast, Fat Burning Dance Mix, and Hit the Spot Core Complete. They all get a little routine and predictable after a while, so that is why I combined them. They are definitly effective to a certain level and to also maintain what you have.

Recently after a long plataeu, I bought Jillian Michaels' The Biggest Winner 5 disc set, doing one video a day, 5 days a week. No weight loss because of the resistance training with dumbbells. I do like the video set, but believe it would be better for maintaining muscle tone. There are lots of tried and true excercises like jumping jacks, jump rope, push ups, but the downside is that the videos don't last long enough to really make me sweat and all the pushups are done on an aerobic step.

I want to take working out to a new level, so I am going to use P90X next. My sister in law has and she looks AMAZING! Good thing I don't have to drop $200 on the series! It's very very hard, but sticking with it, you become stronger and can slowly do more and more and then it gets tough again by combining the dvds differently.....which is the edge I need now. I am a total upper body weiner, so I am looking forward to overcoming that!

i was a die-hard fan of Jane Fonda's - it had absolutely everything i wanted: aerobics (that REALLY got your HR going for like a straight 45 minutes), flexibility, and toning. i'm currently looking to get those VHS tapes converted to dvd format :D

but i also just bought tons more, mainly to give myself a different type and different style of workout for every day of the week :) (ballet workout, bellydance workout, bellydance technique, club dance workout, and yes - the Core Rhythms set).

:)

Well...

I like the beachbody DVDs. They have good dvds for all fitness levels.

I don't know your fitness level, so I can't recommend a one product.

Power Half Hour- This a program for people whose bodies aren't totally trashed, but have a moderate fitness level. The dvd comes with 5 workouts, cardio and weight training, and each workout is a half hour long. This program is for beginners.

P90X- If your fitness is up to speed, and you want to get a really lean and ripped body, P90X is for you. It's a complete package with 12 workout dvds, a workout book, and nutrition book. This is a program for real results (I've done it).

I have to agree with everyone that uses the Beachbody DVD's. I work 13 hour days, so I have the 10 Minute Trainer one. It has 5 area's to work on- total body, lower body, abs, cardio, and yoga. It is set up to do one a day for people like me who really don't have alot of time.... but if you do have more time you can do all of the routines, or the ones you want. It is good for beginners and for advanced, because it does have resitistant bands to add something extra to your workout.

You can go to and check out reviews on all sorts of videos.

I have heard the new Jillian video is pretty good at kicking butt, but I haven't used any of her stuff so wouldn't know by experience.

Love the link, thanks for sharing it. I have Jillian's 30 Day Shred....and it was amazing! I might add that it made me cry toward the end b/c it was intense and I didn't want to stop. I pretended she was in the room with me, yelling at me to keep going! haha! After that being said...I really do recommend it. :)

Also, to add to my "recommended list" :

~Biggest Loser: Power Sculpt

~Biggest Loser: Cardio Max

The Jillian's 30 day shred is definitely on my list of wants!

That's awesome Alex, I'm starting P90X tommorow. I've already lost almost 80 but hopefuly P90X will help with the rest, and toning up.

I love the Tae Bo abs and glutes DVD, they focus on your tummy, your butt and thighs and it really fun to do.

They have a warmup exercise which is punches and stretches and then they move straight into the exercise routines which is mainly floor work so it would be helpful to get a small matt to stop carpet burns or painfull knees on timber floors.

They make you do a bunch of different types of sit-ups, crunches and workouts to help your lower tummy which is what I have a lot of problems with. Then you do exercises for your butt and thighs with leg lifts and kicks which are a killer but really do work.

The best thing is that it is really focused on the main problem areas and targets exactly where you need to tone up and it's fun.

Hi, :)

I'm new to this forum and find the info here so helpful and inspiring.

I was very glad to find this thread. I have been surfing the 'net reading up on and comparing exercise DVDs and admit I am completely overwhelmed! There are so many out there! I am F/36 and have about 70lbs to lose and have some back problems, so one thing I need to work on is my core strength. I'm also very keen to tone and sculpt; I find I enjoy these types of workouts more than cardio (even though I know that it's cardio that's going to burn fat *L*).

I am frustrated by the cost of some of the DVDs I'd like to try. In particular, I've heard good things about "Slim in 6" but even on eBay, by the time I pay shipping - I live in northern Canada - it's up around $40-60 USD ($50-70 CAN). (So if anyone reading this has had their time with Slim in 6 and is ready to move on to new things, email me. I'd be happy to pay a reasonable price and the ACTUAL cost of shipping).

If anyone would like to talk about their latest favorite workout DVDs, I'd love to read about them, too!

I have tried running, walking, elliptical, and every other exercise machine out there. Last year I purchased Turbo Jam which came with the two dvds

The first cd contains
-Teaches you the steps
-20 minutes for people crunched on time
-Turbo Sculpt

The second cd contains

-45 minute cardio party
-Ab Jam

LISTEN...I've lost 22 pounds and started doing it seriously in november! I eat 3 or 4 meals a day but healthy meals and seriously the results are out of this world. When I first purchased the dvds I didn't see results because I'd just go through the motions and was lazy with the kicks. Charlene hits it on the head when she says "It's what you put into it." In Novemeber i started doing the 20 minute mixed in with about 500 crunches a day. I began shedding pounds. Soon enough it wasn't enough for me so I started doing the 45 cardio party and it's such a good workout. I never noticed the TURBO SCULPT until about a month ago...This is when I've began to really shed the pounds. I'm getting compliments all the time and am absolutely loving how toned I'm getting. I do the sculpt 3 days a week and on those days I do the 20 minute workout as well. It's about an hour workout but the results are crazy. Alternate days I do the 45 minute cardio party with 15 minutes of jumping rope. I strongly advise you to try this before any other dvds, believe me I tried them all. In the beginning you might get frustarated but it takes time to learn the steps. It's fun, energetic, and the music rocks!!

Which Dvds did you get? is there anything for beginners?

I do the Turbo Jam workouts. Chalene Johnson doesn't annoy me like some other instructors. It all comes down to activity though. It's not like, "Oh Turbo Jam makes you lose weight faster and better than any other dvd out there." Anything you do, if you keep doing it, will help. I ordered mine forever ago so I don't know how much they run now. If you're willing to spend some money, they're worth a shot.

P90X Rocks!

I just passed day 50 of the P90X program and am seeing great results. So far I've lost 14 lbs and 6% BF. I'm stronger, more energetic, and more flexible than I have been in years. I haven't posted here enough to be allowed to list links, but if you e-mail me at the address below I'll send you a link with my Day 1 and Day 43 pics and more information on P90X and the rest of the Beachbody Workouts.

I love P90X and have developed such a respect for Beachbody that I recently became an Independent Beachbody Coach and would be happy to answer any questions on their products.
