Working towards a 5K

So I decided to sign up for a 5k race this summer because it provides motivation for getting in shape while helping out a good cause. I'm a pretty decent runner, I usually run 20 minutes at the gym at various speed and incline levels. It generally works out to 2.5 miles. What can I do to increase my endurance/speed both on the treadmill/track and through resistance training?

I've always wanted to run a marathon, too.

Here's a really useful article about different training techniques:

Out of curiosity, how much does a 5k work out to in miles? Do you know?

a 5k is equivalent to 3 miles.

I have been thinking of signing up for one as well, just haven't got around to it.

It's good that you are mixing up the speed and incline. That's an integral part of becoming a faster and fitter runner. I really don't have a lot of advice to offer except to incorporate other methods of cardio for variety and strength train all over. Don't just focus on your legs. Arms, abs, back, buns, and all other muscles are used during running, especially racing. Good luck!
