Working out without use of hands????

Okay, this could definitely turn into an interesting topic - as I know it has at the gym.

We have a gentleman that comes to the gym, and has extreme wrist issues (not sure of exactly what the issue are, but he can not have any pressure on his wrist/hands). He uses cuffs at the cable machines and to hold his body weight on the pull-up bars to do abdominal work.

When using some of the machines, he sets towels on the bars, and pushes them with his inner forearm - thus causing a lot of stress on the ligaments, in turn causing pain to both his thumb and into his elbow.

In thinking about it, and looking around the gym, there are not many upper body strength exercises you can do without using your hands.

Has anyone worked with someone who has limited use of their hands/thumbs - or maybe is missing a limb??

This man manages pretty well, and this is more of a curiosity question.

Thanks!

This is a question that should really be answered by a professional, spends some time in the gym with him to properly analyse his situation.

It sure does sound interesting! No, I have never worked with anyone in that situation. Good for him for not letting it stop him! (Unless of course his doctor told him not to, in which case I change that statement to "Shame on him".) I have worked with post stroke people who cannot use their hands, but since their exercises are more range of motion and not actually holding weights it does not really effect them. Even so, they can put pressure on their wrists... doing things like cat stretches etc. So they basically have more use than he does!

I agree -- I am not trying to work with him. I just thought it brought up an interesting situation and was looking for others' input.
