I am 5'2" and weigh 120 lbs. I would like to get down to 110 or 115, but am having a hard time losing 5-10 lbs. I hate cardio, but I'm trying to get back into the pattern of going to the gym cause i have a feelin its the only way i'll lose weight. So during M-F I go to the gym about 4-5 times. I run on the treadmill at about 5 mph for 30-40 min. After that, I usually do some weight lifting. just a few things though because i don't want to bulk up. on the weekends i pretty much don't do anything (because i'm at college and i go home on the weekends where i don't have a gym). i did this for one week and when i was done i had gained weight instead of losing it. i eat small portions during the week (sometimes onthe weekends i binge though). is the possible weight gain because i've been lifting weights (which i didn't do before) and gaining muscle? by doing this workout routine, is it possible for me to lose 5-10 lbs? and what should i increase first when running, speed or time? ok i know thats a lot but any help would be appreciated!! thanks

Ok please remember that muscle weighs more than fat. For every pound of fat you lose you gain two pounds of muscle.

Now - if your a female (and I am assuming you are) then the concept that lifting weights will make you bulk up is wrong. Unless your on steriods and lifting 300lbs + then your not going to bulk up.

You will however, gain muscle, get toned and be more defined. With that being said, I would do your weights FIRST, doing smaller weights with more reps and then do your cardio after.

But each person is different. Something make work totally different for you than for me. I would not look at the scale weight that you want to be at. Instead I would focus on the inches and how your clothes look and how defined you are. The scale can be deceiving.

Good luck

Untrue, where did you get that info? Only genetic freaks could manage to lose fat and gain muscle at the same time; Have you ever read Burn the Fat Feed The Muscle by Tom Venuto? It explains the whole concept in his e-book.

Usually people lose fat AND muscle. If you didn't lose weight the first week of your diet it doesn't automatically mean you gained muscle! Gaining muscle is hard work, and females are not good at it because they don't have the make up for it. So unless you are in a calorie surplus its unlikely you will gain much muscle.

If you haven't lost any weight it could be that:
You are underestimating your calories
You are replacing your calories burnt with more calories (NO NO!)
You could be constipated
You could be retaining water
You could be eating too much salt (in processed foods mainly)

So its quite possible she hasn't gained muscle or lost fat - You shouldn't really go by the scale, take measurements or take note of how you are looking in the mirror or how your pants fit.

Sorry I wasnt trying to give any bogus information. I was told that once by a PT and so that I have literally had that in my head for about 5 years now. Thanks for keeping me straight!!:p

No problem.... we're all wrong at one point or another!!!!

:)

Might want to make a mental note though: Most PTs belong in special school.
